I'll be voting above the line for the Senate, and think I'll find enough I can half-tolerate without having to go to Hanson's mob.

Agree with GeeD that enough groups should be able to be found without you having to foul your paper and your conscience by giving Hanson a number, however large. That said, I do like giving certain groups very large numbers as a form of me giving the silent finger to them.

If I stopped numbering, say, after 6, it is possible that by the time they get to my vote none of the candidates I listed had enough of a quota to get in. In that case I am in effect saying I don't care who gets in afterwards and the rest of the population can decide -- which may be true once you reach #65 or so, if you go below the line, but is probably not true at #6. But I'd agree if you're a above the line person you may want to go a bit above 6. 6 is the magic number as if you dwell in a state you send 12 senators (2 each for the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory). As, unless we have a double dissolution like we did in 2016, half the senators are up for re-election at any one time, you get 6.

On Hanson's "poor me" act, I am filled with rage. This woman is one of the most divisive and ill-thinking humans (used loosely) to ever set foot on this planet. Big call I know, but she, to me, is utterly reprehensible. The media has, in turns, both reviled her and given her a platform for her views (often the same medium), so for her to say she is hard done by is laughable. I hold no hope -- as despite what happens or what she vomits forth, she arises anew each time, egged on by sections of the media -- but my wish is that she crashes and burns this election and leaves politics, and my eardrums, for good.

Always good to pat yourself on the back.

(my self-imposed Guardian exile to try and read less lefty news* has not survived the election build-up...)

    * and there is a reason "peak Guardian" is a term...

My wife reckons we might be voting electronically in Paris. That will be fun!
  • I was surprised to learn that one son and I both had fun deciding who would be numbered last on Senate paper. So many worthy candidates for the position.
  • ClimacusClimacus Shipmate
They're not all nutjobs, but today's Crikey gave a list of those we've lost so far this election...

Strip club and foul comments: 1

    Anti-Islam/homophobic actions/comments: 2

Believing in lizard people and the Jewish conspiracy: 1

Palestinian support (being a distraction): 1

Section 44 -- thought that was over? (dual nationals): 6, maybe 7

    Government employee: 1

Lizard people and the Jewish conspiracy??? I'd have thought that lizards weren't kosher, no real reason to be save the scales.
  • Gee DGee D Shipmate
Of course, scales are safe - but are lizards kosher?
  • Simon ToadSimon Toad Shipmate
    Only in the Territory...

Indeed. And no idea re kosher lizards...

    For those wondering:
    Wayne Kurnoth — Labor

A Northern Territory candidate has been dumped by the Labor Party after it emerged that he shared a post by David Icke, an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist who believes the world is under the control of reptiles masking themselves as Jews. The post, shared in 2015, was a conspiracy about the Rothschild banking family.

So I was hasty in attributing lizard beliefs to Wayne; he just likes comments from those who subscribe to them.

In the ACT, there is a campaign to "Vote alphabetical: Put Zed Last" . Zed (the name everyone except maybe his mother knows him as ) is a right-winger who has scraped in on preferences as the lone Liberal Senator for the ACT in the last few elections, being top of their ticket.

As there are only 17 candidates for the two ACT Senate seats, it is easy to vote below the line here, so many (including me) will vote all the way down to 17 just for the pleasure of putting him last.

  • Pacific islands will survive climate crisis because they 'pick our fruit', Australia's deputy PM says.
“They’ll continue to survive because many of their workers come here and pick our fruit, pick our fruit grown with hard Australian enterprise and endeavour and we welcome them and we always will."

Whaat a thoughtless, undiplomatic, supremacist comment. How could he?

So will they come and pick the fruit then go back to their underwater islands or will they be accommodated in the same gracious way asylum seekers are?

Um ... because he comes from the same coalition that gave us this?

I kind of thought that, too, at first - I mean, this is the guy who accused an amputee of milking her disability - but that particular comment from Dutton is germane to the climate change/sea rise issue, so it makes sense...

    What anoesis said. Dumbarse.
  • at least anoesis was nice about it 😁

Indeed. I don't like you, and so see no reason to be nice to you. YMMV.

Returning to the topic at hand, Peter Dutton continues to be an odious prick. Although he claims lefties are "dead to me," he can certainly moderate his language when it suits him. Speaking to the deplorables who listen to 2GB, however, he ramps up his racism appropriately, recently adding the term anchor babies to his rhetoric of bigotry. He is a populist, through and through, with not a shred of conviction.
  • Fuck you very much for the compliment DK. I like me sometimes, and at other times not so much. It all depends on my mood.

Dutton is a very committed hard right ideologue and a head-kicker, not a populist. Potatoes do not sway in the breeze.
  • Yeah, no. He is a populist. Just because you really think something, does not mean you are correct. The reason Dutton is a head-kicker is because his stance is popular with the bigots who form his voting base.
  • And fuck you right back, deadshit. Your blokey "why-can't-we-all-get-along" schtick is pretty clearly an act, as demonstrated in the way you interact with me in The Circus.
  • ScoMo is surely the Australian Deadshit of the Year right now, for his ridiculous performance in the US over the past few days.
  • I'm prepared to bet that if there were an election on Saturday, he'd increase his majority. That's a sad reflection
  • Gee D wrote: »

I think this is almost certainly true. Sigh.
  • Yeah, no. He is a populist. Just because you really think something, does not mean you are correct. The reason Dutton is a head-kicker is because his stance is popular with the bigots who form his voting base.

No no no, little one. You misunderstand the situation completely, as usual.

I am a nice guy, I am not a nice guy. It depends on my mood. I don't hide that. You just don't see it because you are a fool, obviously.
  • Beautifully argued, nimrod.
  • I know you are, but what am I?
  • Morrison is trying on Toad's faux blokey bonhomie atm, sucking up to Trump in Washington. Meanwhile, it turns out the majority down here want him to talk tough on China, even though they are our biggest trade partner and if they decide to stop buying the ore we dig up, we are up shit's creek.
Meanwhile, even though Morrison and his mates are in the coal lobby's death grip, it turns out Oz can meet renewable energy targets. Easily. So - we need Adani why, exactly? Oh, that's right, because years of talking down green energy in Oz has meant that there is a downturn in investment in renewables even while we are leading the world in building renewable energy.
    Dicks.
  • shit creek, unless you mean the TV show, and I think that is spelt with a zed.

Go forth and multiply, but in other words.
  • The populist duo of tweedle-dumb and tweedle-even-dumber at the helm of Oz politics - Dutton and Morrison - were supposed to be good at one thing. An excessively cruel and immoral asylum seeker policy that provides an iron control on Australian borders. Myth busted. They suck at that, too. Borders have never been more out of control.
  • excellent. The more the merrier.
  • Gee DGee D Shipmate
And there's now one who's come out with some real anti-semitic tripe. You guessed it, a Green from Marrickville and she's somehow managed to get her piece printed in a Party paper.
  • Are you trying to be ambiguous? Do you have a link, or even a name?
  • Gee DGee D Shipmate
    edited October 2019
Sorry, it was Margot Oliver and while I can't get a link to the paper itself, the SBS site had it. Can't get to links via my phone.
  • Gee DGee D Shipmate
I withdraw what I said. Madame tells me that this article was transphobic, but that Ms Oliver was involved in the period when the Greens ran Marrickville Council and decided that that gave them the right to run Australian foreign policy as well.
  • Thank you, Jacqui. So nice to know we not only lock up refugees on islands but now we don't need to bring them here if they are unwell.
  • What is wrong with us?
  • We come from thieving bastards, we don't want to give back what we stole, and we want as few other people as possible to share it. For a pack of immigrants, we sure hate immigration.
  • Preach.
  • We like the right sort of immigrants. White ones are generally OK. And rich ones.
  • Andrew bloody Bolt has a hold on my mother. She asked me to buy some books for the nephews for Christmas including Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. I suggested that is likely to be on school book lists, and proposed Tom Keneally's The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, a book exploring Australian racism. Her response: That's left-wing claptrap, they get enough of that.
  • I empathise. My Mum, who was born on the sub-continent, loves watching those "reality" shows set in airport security, where immigrants are targeted relentlessly. I think it may actually be called "Border Security." It is almost as if that mutt Peter Dutton is an executive producer. Why does she watch a show which is unabashedly racist from beginning to end? Does anything make sense?
