Linkage issues

I'm suddenly having a lot of trouble with links. Both last night and just now, my efforts to link to articles or images is causing major problems that lead to a lot of editing, deleting, re-linking, and cursing that alarms the cats. Is anyone else having problems?

Yes. In non-standard and not necessarily reproducible ways. I had assumed it was just me and my ham-fisted attempts, but something appears to be amiss.

Me too. Clicking OK when trying to insert a link merely repeats the link over and over again. Clicking Cancel has no effect.

I have had this for a couple of days. I kept getting blank [ url= ] put into my messages. Again I assumed it was me so did not take careful notes but did notice it fixed for some reason (maybe using a different browser) at one point.

I vaguely remember having to adjust the code when trying to post a link. Got an extra h before https:(link address) which messed up the result of using the link button. Put it down to my finger fumble and just adjusted the code manually.

pease, I don't know if that provides enough clues for a bit of testing? Sounds like there might be something going on?

And then did this using the link button.

What I noticed is that when you first press the link button, you get the small screen with "http:" characters and no apparent cursor. I achieved the above link by simply moving the cursor before the "http:" characters and pasting in the link address. Then I got the blued out copy of the link which I simply overwrote with the above text.

I noticed a change in the linking behaviour, too. It used to be that when you poked the link button, the cursor would jump to the URL box in the popup. But now the cursor remains in the composition box, requiring a new click to edit the URL box. I assumed that this is a feature of the software to simultaneously ensure that we're paying attention and to entertain the daemons handling the data.

I also thought it was my doing something wrong yesterday when I couldn't get a link to post properly. I refreshed the page, and it worked with no difficulties, which convinced me that it was my fault the first time I tried. So in a way, I'm glad it wasn't just me -- but sorry that it's a problem for other Shipmates.

I always just type out the code, because I find that is easier than clicking the link thing and then deleting the http bit.

Typing it out is a real pain on a phone - over 20 keystrokes in addition to any actual content.

I do it on my phone and don't think about it - guess I am just used to typing code though. I have always found it more of a pain to switch to the link button, delete the http bit, and then once back in the text box to move the cursor round and delete the bit in the middle to add a simple word.

I’ve put a couple of keyboard shortcuts on my phone which massively reduce the code typing part, and of course the actual url is generally pasted anyway.

It seems that both the buttons are now not just superfluous, but are actively trying to mess you around.

When typing in the URL box, pressing space drops the URL and the input focus back into the text, and whatever you type next appears as the displayed text of the URL. It looks like it always worked this way, except that pressing space additionally closed the URL box, but alas, no more...

Yeah! I was thinking that I was forgetting how to do something that I could do last week! It's a bit of a relief to find out that it's not just me.
