I often see UCCan for the United Church of Canada, but perhaps that’s because I’m where UCC is assumed to mean United Church of Christ.

    A few others:

PC(USA) or PCUSA—the Presbyterian Church (USA)
ELCA—the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Are these seriously acronyms expected to be bantered about in conversation on The Ship without in-thread clarification?

If you want this thread to exist in The Styx as Ship-related reference material, keep it to just what's likely to be useful. If you want to continue merrily transcribing the entire contents of https://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/, get ready for this sucker to ascend Heavenly.

The various denominational acronyms do seem to get used a fair amount in Ecclesiantics, usually without in-thread clarification. But point taken.

It would really help, when referring to the BCP, if people made clear which church's BCP (and if necessary which year's) they had in mind. It took me quite some time to realise that TEC had a BCP separate from the CofE one, and that there were multiple revisions/editions of it.

You're going to think it awfully provincial of old Miss Amanda, but she was always confused by NHS -- which to an old American schoolteacher means National Honor Society. Of course to a Brit it means something else.

I've also been confused by NT, which to me is an antiquated Windows operating system but to those in the know is New Testament.

Of course a significant number of users use MP for member of parliament, but context should usually clarify.

    Or "Mission Praise" (the hymnbook).

I doubt if there are any MPS who worship in churches under the MP which use MP!
  • I thought MP was Morning Prayer.
  • It is - with EP as Evening Prayer - but in Ukland it also refers, as others have said, to 'Members of Parliament' (aka at the moment as 'The Toddlers', on account of their childish behaviour).

    Harrumph. Apologies for minor rant.
  • It's also "Military Police" in the US.

As someone who hangs around Anglicans far too much, one can get duped into thinking that BCP = Book of Common Prayer, when that same acronym is far more commonly used as Business Continuity Plan. Given our office location is in a place identified by the police as being a possible target for terrorists, being asked to refer to the BCP raised a few eyebrows.
  • There's a Roman Catholic school for boys in Phoenix, Brophy College Prep. They have car decals, based on the oval national decals, saying "BCP." Until I got close enough to read the fine print, I thought perhaps the Prayer Book Society (formerly known as the Society for the Preservation of the Book of Common Prayer) might be issuing them.
