    T = delusional cult leader.

People around him = trying both to believe and to keep themselves safe, and to still have a job for money to pay for their rent and groceries.

T's groupies/voters = many still trying to live within T's dream.

Little cracks = reality trying to break through the metaphorical dam T built to both impress and contain his followers.

What happens when it all falls down?

    :votive:

I can't muster much sympathy for these folks. T's character flaws / moral failings / intellectual deficits are not exactly well-concealed. I don't recall the cultural or linguistic origins of the saying, but "Who lies down with dogs gets up with fleas" was true when first uttered and remains so.
  • He feels better because he had steroids. He's going to be very very ill by the weekend. 4-6 days from now. So sayeth infectious disease expert without actually taking about maskless b Mr Pale Marmalade.
  • NP--

And, once he got back to the WH, he took his mask off. And he's known to be infectious.
  • Phher--

FYI: I wasn't just concerned about them. If everything falls down, it's going to affect everyone else, too.

Re what I said about a metaphorical dam cracking and falling down:

There's an episode of the "Dead Zone" TV series where (more) weird things are happening. Animals, both wild and domestic, go totally mad and viciously attack humans. Sometimes, beloved pets are shot mid-attack because that's the only way to stop them.

It turns out that there are micro cracks in a nearby dam. The fracturing sets off frequencies that most humans can't hear. But it drives animals mad. I think the humans eventually destroy the dam, or something.

Little things can make big differences.

May they make only good ones.

    Delusional indeed.

He’s on strong steroids and still struggling to breathe. It will be interesting to see how he is when the course of steroids is finished. 🤔
  • I assume Trump is desperate to win, and will stop at nothing. I don't know how far that goes, but a narrow win for Biden spells trouble.
  • Did you see him make an appearance on the balcony like a fucking monarch? You bastards should have stuck with mad King George. At least by now you wouldn't have a bloke trying to be an actual authoritarian monarch, and a sub-nation of kowtowing fools, some outside cheering, some inside, jockeying for patronage.
  • Poor old George III wasn't, it seems, actually mad (as in stark staring bonkers), but very ill with a disease not then understood.

Mind you, I've been reminded by many Shipmates that The Pale Horseman Of The Apocalypse isn't so much mad, as bad...

    An interesting thought.

Do you mean, perhaps, that the whole thing is being *faked*, so that they can say 'Look! See how strong and victorious Our Glorious Leader is!'? It would make a good fillum.

US Shipmates will comment, I expect, but would it really be feasible to suborn so many medics, and other hospital staff? It would take quite a lot of $$$ to square them all, and then there'd be the risk of someone whistle-blowing later on.

OTOH, maybe he's just got a common cold, or a dose of equally common 'flu.

You would not need to persuade that many people. However if it is genuine, there is real hope for other overweight men in their mid 70s

  • That picture of him on the balcony is very funny, and is inviting much decoration, already on Twitter there are images of Mussolini attached, plus the 3 Stooges, plus Dr Strangelove. It's hard to believe this is really happening, but I suppose they said this after the Reichstag fire.

Early days yet. Chances are he'll be very ill indeed by this time next week.

    Maybe BF, maybe.

Given that he was visibly struggling to breathe in the video, I'm sure the White House prefers to use still photos.

Far be it from me to defend him, but he had just walked up a long flight of stairs. That would leave me struggling for breath too.
  • I can't even get up from kneeling on the floor without grab-holds and strategic pauses for recuperation.

I don’t think so. He was struggling for breath in a way that shows a tight chest - using the neck muscles.

I reckon that without steroids he’d be in a mess. Once he’s off the medication we’ll know how well, or not, he is.

Meanwhile he blows up the stimulus talks. If this were a screenplay it would be rejected for being OTT.

I’ve just watched ‘Contagion’. The plot was tame tame tame compared to this!

  • A properly scary film, though.

Re breathing - if The Mad God-King was huffing and puffing because he'd just walked upstairs, surely his minions would have allowed him a few minutes to get his breath back before proceeding?

Although I suppose that he would insist on carrying on straightaway...

I thought I've been having: one of the most prescient things about Contagion was Jude Law's character, spreading misinformation on the internet.

In real life, however, the dude spreading the misinformation is not some random blogger, but the President of the United States. The film seems strangely tame in comparison.
  • Yes, if they'd made the POTUS the blogger in the film, they'd be accused of going completely over the top...

The situation in the Shite White House is surely going to end in tears.

  • Too true, alas. A Covid-19 hotspot if ever there was...

The White House has instructed the CDC not to conduct any contact tracing on its personnel. (Don't Mask, Don't Tell!) However, because this is the information age there's enough publicly available information that internet enthusiasts can do it.
  • Good God. What are They afraid of?

  • Who do you think you are Mr. Big Stuff.? You're never going to get my love. You think you're higher than every star above.

(Let's dance in our chairs people)
  • I was watching "Democracy Now", last night. There'd just been a segment about T--and they closed it with a bit of the song "Karma Chameleon". Specifically, "he's a man without conviction, he's a man who doesn't know...".

    Apt. :)

BTW, I recommend the "Democracy Now" TV/radio series. It's low key, honest, and well done.

I see you Anselmina, and you too Amanda. And in you I see me. I'm lucky to be in a physical job, and to only have 53 years under my belt so far.

I feel a song coming on - to the tune of the end of I am the Walrus:

Blight house, shite house, stupid bloody White House... repeat and fade...

A parody that got quite a bit of play recently ran:

    The refrain of which went:

Vote him away, vote him away, vote him away . . .
  • Good God. What are They afraid of?

In the immediate case, that people will notice that their president* is indifferent to their survival and his policies have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans and the sickening of millions of Americans.

In the broader sense, it seems obvious that the president*'s health cannot be kept totally secret in a hospital, but someplace like the White House is more easily controlled. I'm thinking of a mash-up of Dave and Weekend At Bernie's Donnie's.

It also seems somewhat relevant that medical professionals are prevented by HIPAA from disclosing a patient's medical condition, but there are no such restrictions on disclosing overheard conversations involving conspiracy to commit electoral fraud. Just sayin'.

If The Mad God-King does die in the White Shite Blight House, will there be anybody within who is still well enough to bring out, and display, the corpse?
    :fearful:
  • OhherOhher Shipmate
And, sadly, such a display may be needed before His Faithful-if-Deluded-Followers -- the FIDF, if you will, accept reality (if ever).

I frankly am not much impressed by Mr. Biden (his VP I'm OK with), but I would enthusiastically vote my cat into the US Presidency before casting a ballot for Current Occupant Usurper.

Just pursuing this rather macabre thought for a moment, the Corpse Of The God-King would have to be obviously rotting, yet still recognisable.

This would require some quite accurate post-mortem calculations, in order to get the displaying of the Corpse at exactly the right time to convince (yes, I know) the FIDF.

My sentiment precisely. The Man in the Moon would make a better president than you-know-who, and probably a better one than Uncle Joe. But even if the Democrats ran Jabba the Hutt, they'll get my vote.

  • Uncle Joe comes across as a fairly presentable Humming Bean, so one hopes that he will at least be given the chance to begin to undo some of the Evil caused by The Mad God-King and his minions...
  • EnochEnoch Shipmate
That was the point I couldn't get my head round from over here with the last US Presidential election. I accept that I wasn't there. It wasn't my election. Nevertheless, it struck me that Hillary Clinton was worthy but a bit dull, whereas the candidate who won was so unspeakable even then - before we'd seen how dreadful has he turned out to be in office - that I could not see, and still can't, how anybody could vote for him rather than her and retain any claim to personal integrity.

Faced with that choice, however unexciting she was, it struck me as obvious that a person should vote for her simply because of who she wasn't.

  • You're not the only one on this side of the pond who thought along those lines.

Or, of course, in the US...
  • But that sees politics as a measured rational enterprise. I don't think it is. It involves passions, prejudices, resentment, envy, and so on. In an unequal society, which most are, these can become fierce. Then add on the tail from the financial crash, and you get mayhem. Humans are not rational, hence you get wars, revolutions, civil wars, genocides.
  • .

Or, of course, in the US...

In the US, she got the popular vote. Your point is...?
  • ...that, despite the popular vote, the surprise/shock was The Orange Oaf becoming POTUS.

    That just seems so wrong...
  • It IS wrong. But you appeared to be implying that people on your side of the pond are somehow more sensible...
  • Sincere apologies if that was how it came across - it certainly wasn't meant to.

I hesitate to hold up the English as more sensible - we have Boris Johnson to prove otherwise...
  • Can we send them all back to where they came from? A rift in interstellar space, I think...
  • Someone fooling around with the Large Hadron Collider back in 2016 might have caused the interstellar rift...or perhaps caused us to be projected into a parallel universe.

There may be other parallel universes WORSE than this one, though...

I think it was 2015. Somebody went back in time and changed the timeline to save us all from the chaos under Ed Miliband.

  • O of course...silly me...2015 it was, indeed.

  • It was certain episodes of Deep Space Nine that I was thinking of, yes...
