Ship Eurovision Song Contest 2023

As the big contest will be held in the UK (Liverpool) this year, on behalf of Ukraine, do we want to have one of our infamous Ship Eurovision Song Contests this year?
The rules are simple. Each player picks a country and prepares their entry. There is normally some build up before the contest so you can do that as well.
You don’t have to pick one of the standard Eurovision countries. We have had entries from the US and the last winner was a lockdown song from Wales.
We sometimes have a commentator but only if someone wants to do it. We sometimes have the post cards that go before an entry but not always.
Normally we would post out entry and people vote following the traditional 1-8, 10 and 12 point system. Someone normally volunteers to keep score.
Do we want to do it this year?

(note: thread title changed as it turned out yes, we did want one this year and it was glorious! -- Trudy, Heavenly Host)

Please note this is a humorous event. It normally happens here in Heaven but if a hosts thinks The Circus is better fell free to move it.

Good thinking! I'll ask. Watch this space. :)

Although I never feel clever enough to participate, I love reading Ship's Eurovision when we've had it in the past, and as a Heavenly Host, I personally feel that its spiritual home is here in Heaven.
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
    OK let’s start sign up
I will take my usual country France
  • I will take Italy again.

Re reading last time, hosting should be Wales.

(Note to self, don't read the Eurovision thread when you're supposed to be doing something else. It's very hard to do things when you are cracking up.)

I was just looking for the link to the most recent Ship's Eurovision thread -- I thought we had been properly sending them to Limbo, but the most recent one I could find is the 2020 thread and that's in Oblivion -- however the 2020 thread link is here for anyone who wants to get the flavour of the "event." If anyone is better than I at searching and can find more recent ones feel free to drop the links here.

We don’t do it every year, 2020 was the last one.

I will represent Wales as the winner - which means this year’s contest will come to you from the Land of Song!

Thanks -- I thought I remembered one more recently than 2020, but it's just that 2020 feels more recent than I thought it was!

This is only my first post, I’m but awfully tempted. Has anyone claimed USA?

  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
I would have liked to be France, what with being French and all, but since my country is taken, I shall move over the border and be Germany.
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
I don't mind you having France and I will take Germany if you want Rouge. Click you can have USA
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
I will give anyone who wants to join to claim a country by this weekend.
  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
@Hugal I don't mind if you keep France. I think Helmut and the Wurst are shaping up to be quite an act.
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
    Cool.
OK let’s give it a bit longer than this weekend
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
Bumping up this post to give more people time to join.
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
Ok if we are doing this we need to start soon.

Hello! Nearly missed this, I’ve not been on board for a while. Is there still space? Suggest a country for me. In the dim and distant past I’ve been Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, U.K., Spain, Denmark and Litcheinstein. (sp)

And please, not Israel; I’ve family links there now so would prefer to avoid for fear of causing offence.

Ahem…I can foresee some friendly rivalry ahead @la vie en rouge . 😀 Have you read any of my past entries?

Actually, @Hugal , I know you’re France, but are we allowed to also have a separate French regional competitor? I’ve first-hand knowledge of Alsace and it would fit nicely with the old Alpenhorn vibe.
  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
Do the Swiss take part in Eurovision? Alpenhorns are popular there, I believe.

They’ve been known to in the past, yes.

I would go for a Swiss Entry. Let’s begin next week. Monday we can make the first announcements

Do you mean mine, Hugal? Don’t forget I’ve been Switzerland before, way back in the mists of time. It’d be too obvious. Alsace is to France a bit like Wales to the UK; in the kingdom but not of the kingdom. Though I guess I could have the Swiss contestants ehrm…’removed’ at the last minute, so in desperation they call on their near neighbours, Alsace , who send the as yet undiscovered Hildegarde Cloche, a simple country girl from the tiny hamlet of Nom de Dieu. Yup put me down as La Suisse and I’ll get plotting. 😇

Pendragon, has this been approved by the Vatican?
  • PendragonPendragon Shipmate
You're giving the set designers ideas now!!
  • MiffyMiffy Shipmate
    The mind boggles @Pendragon ….
Mine will likely draw on the inspiration of the Rhineland mystics. At least, that’s what the organisers specified in their brief. I suspect they’re thinking of the wrong Hildegarde, the German one, Never mind, mystical theology and philosophical thought transcends human-imposed boundaries.

I know I'm wildly late to the game, but any chance Ireland can get under the wire?

Do hope you can; we need all the competitors we can get , I imagine.

(frantic emailing to and fro between Berne and Strasbourg even as we speak)🙁

  • HugalHugal Shipmate
    Yep Ireland is always welcome.
    Let’s start proceeding on Friday

From: Euro Committee, La Suisse Monday

To: Comite Alsacien Culture et Loisirs, Strasbourg (CAC)

    Esteemed colleagues,

Help! Our Euro 2023 entry, Hansi Bear and his Enormous Accordion, his backing group and orchestra have succumbed to cowpox. As a result, a cordon sanitaire has been thrown round the capital and border points are closed. Since all passage in and out of the country is banned, we are therefore unable to field our number two candidate, Helena Belena, ( the 2020 Lichtenstein delegate who was forced to seek refuge in neutral territory post- contest after an unfortunate incident involving a Klingon and a Swiss cheese baguette).

So we appeal to you, our valued neighbours; can you answer The Call and save the honour of our proud country? Ideally, candidates would need to have the same vibe as Hansi, who draws on our shared heritage of Rhineland mysticism with a popular appeal. Air France flights and accommodation in the Euro village are on us. Just find us someone, anyone!

    Yours

From: Comite Alsacien, Culture et Loisirs, Strasbourg. Tuesday

To: Euro Committee La Suisse, Berne

    Cheres colleagues,

We have just the person for you; fresh from the tiny hamlet of Nom de Dieu, close to the (fictional) village of Kirchenheim. Hildegarde Cloche combines the voice of an angel with all the exuberance of our proud folk tradition. ( Her performances on karaoke evenings at the local Restaurant Tarte Flambee have to be heard to be believed). Shy, retiring, modest, unsophisticated, she’s never been outside the region in her life, though rumour has it that she has connections all over Europe.

We are proud to commend you to her as a worthy stand-in for the Swiss delegate at this year’s Concours Europeen de Chanson.

    Yours
    La Comite (CAC)

P.s For goodness sake, not a word to Thierry and Practice!🤫

Pettegolezzi eurovisivi, a little known Italian site devoted to Eurovision gossip, thinks that they have a scoop from a mole in the Italian camp: the lyricist has been getting a computer to write the words of their entry....
  • FirenzeFirenze Shipmate, Host Emeritus
Meanwhile the whole of Ireland is totally mesmerised by the contest to find the Voice of Ireland. They talk of little else in Roscommon.

There could be a late entry from the Faroe Islands if the performers' fishing boat returns in time.

My apologies, Gill, I muddled Ship and RL venues! The Swiss/Alsacien contestants will fly Swissair to Liverpool, before taking Transport for Wales to the contest arena in Cardiff (?) They’ll have quite a lot of luggage as Hildegarde is bringing her backing group, the Swiss Mystics with her.

Oops, sorry, just re-read the 2020 thread. Ok, I’ll tell Hildegarde’s tour manager to book tickets to
    Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
  • A group of American tourists has booked a tour to see the event and get a taste of European high culture; the ad spoke enticingly of a "Smörgåsbörd of Haute Musica!!!". As the travel arranger found that Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch wouldn't fit in the online form, the group will be staying in Bangor (the group was also assured that American food, i.e., a McDonalds, was close by).
  • FirenzeFirenze Shipmate, Host Emeritus
So far the preliminary heats have yielded tribute band You Too, drag act Kylie Inflammatory, and an animatronic Val Doonican. The search continues.
  • MiffyMiffy Shipmate
Meanwhile, back in sunny Alsace, Hildegarde’s lyricist is panicing; CAC has promised Rhineland mysticism; her namesake’s ‘A Feather on the Breath of God,’ is going to be a hard act to follow and they suspect that’s the good Abbess was not particularly into alpenhorns.

@Net Spinster , it’ll make it much easier to choose songs for the drive to the hotel. Tell your group that it’s a proud UK tradition go have a good old sing-song on the coach!

Don’t buy those tickets yet Miffy - there is news coming through from Gladys Friday that a change of venue will shortly be announced!
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
News from France. The chosen entry Elle!?! Has not been seen for a while. CCTV footage has her talking to two vaguely familiar men who appear to be naked. Left at site was a note saying “We will return” signed T and P.
Police are asking two former French entrants to help with their investigation
  • HugalHugal Shipmate
Further news from France. Elle!?! has returned. She says she has been working with new voice coaches and she has brought a note. It says, “we will watch the performance from the Royal box. If our instructions are not complied with a disaster will occur”.

Phew! That’s a relief. It will still be in Wales though, won’t it?

    This is worrying…

  • The American tour arranger, Marlene, has had to reprimand her assistant, Chuck, since he booked bus tickets to Bangor, Maine not Wales; he is now taking an online course in British geography (provided by Liberty University). Those in the group now know they have to come up with some songs for the sea/land travel in the UK (due to the late arrangements, they will now be arriving at Shannon airport, ferry to Liverpool, bus to Bangor [Wales]).

Helmut emerges from a Berlin nightclub and heads off in search of the Wurst.
