Indeed, their enthusiasm can sometimes be overwhelming !

Gramps, thanks for that link. I found it enlightening; what a word to use for such men.

An interesting story about Hitler. Now, why would I want to put this in the Trump thread?
"In the twelve years of his rule in Germany Hitler produced the biggest confusion in government that has ever existed in a civilized state."

I think tRump is now rivalling this record.

Going back to this comment from April 19: The Orange County Register is today reporting that over 1000 people are protesting in the same place, on the day that Orange County is reporting its highest number of new cases yet. No masks, no social distancing for most of them. So maybe being suburban white people won't protect them from their own foolishness.

Shouldn't people ignoring advice to stay home for their own good and the good of others around them - say on a protest and being seen on TV waving a placard - be grounds for invalidating their health insurance? It might bring people to their senses.

  • If they had the staff to track such people down...

And of course it's a risky bet legally. Though it greatly appeals to the frustrated part of me.

And it presumes they have health insurance.
  • Perhaps their health insurance is belief in Trump?
  • It would be worth health insurers saying it clearly: "taking unnecessary risks with your health means your cover may be compromised and don't expect to get priority treatment if others need ICU beds, ventilators etc. too." If someone in a crowd is seen on TV someone will probably spot them.

Imagine protestors, seeing people are there with cameras, covering their faces to avoid recognition - inadvertantly reducing their risk of infecting someone. :)

As LC said, that's probably illegal. Also against insurance regulations, and probably contrary to insurance policy contracts.

If these protestors are genuine libertarians, or at least believers in liberty as understood in a classical sense, then they should have no problem with insurance companies, as privately owned emtities, using whatever criteria they want to decide who to insure.

But as others have already stated, it would probably raise a host of other issues.

  • Why would it be illegal? Don't people who take part in extreme sports pay a different premium to those who don't?

No, they'd probably use eye masks, rather than nose/mouth masks.

(I have seen pictures of a few in Guy Fawkes masks.)

Why would it be illegal? Don't people who take part in extreme sports pay a different premium to those who don't?

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) everyone is group rated, meaning that they all pay the same premiums. Insurance companies are allowed to vary their premiums only by geographic region (because the cost of health care varies from place to place) and smoking status (because sometimes government uses market forces to achieve policy ends, like reducing smoking rates). So no, people who take part in extreme sports or work in exceptionally dangerous jobs aren't charged more for health insurance, at least on the Obamacare exchanges. Not entirely sure about employer-provided health insurance.

    Life insurance is another question.

Don't get your hopes up, Gramps49. It would indeed be a remarkable comeuppance if Trump got the virus and got as ill as Boris did. But life doesn't normally follow those sorts of scripts.

It's widely considered that the script writers on this show are utter hacks so it's entirely plausible that they'd bring the Trump arc to an end that way.

    That made me smile!

Trump is being tested daily and is negative so far. He's a bit of a germophobe (another of his internal contradiction) so this must have really spooked him.
  • Trump is being tested daily and is negative so far.

That sentence could be applied to other aspects of Trump's life, quite apart from health considerations...

Is it established that he's a germaphobe? I remember that as being his alibi for why he could not have been filmed enjoying urophiliac delights in a Moscow hotel room, but I don't recall it being confirmed by anyone else. (Not that it's impossible.)

Also I gather that having the test done is Not Very Nice™ so I admit to a bit of schadenfreude at knowing Trump is having it inflicted on him daily.

Trump has a few past stories along those lines but as I've noted here before actual germophobes don't have unprotected sex with porn stars. Trump is just prissy.

The Valet was tasked with serving Chump his meals. It is reported he started feeling ill on Wednesday and tested positive on Thursday. There is no indication when said valet last served Trump a meal.

    ____

In other news, the Barr Justice Department has dropped the Flynn prosecution (meaning Chump will not have to pardon Flynn). He is scott free. Chump just may bring him back into the White House.

And now Chump has named one of his cronies as the new Postmaster General for the postal service. Chump has had an ongoing feud with the postal service because he thought the USPS should be charging Amazon more for the last mile delivery. How that works is Amazon bulk delivers their own packages to the nearest post office and the post office delivers the packages to individual homes. But, in reality, Chump has never liked Amazon's owner, Jeff Bezos who is a Democrat.

The USPS just may become insolvent in June. Chump could not be happier if it did.
  • mousethiefmousethief Shipmate
The GOP has been trying to destroy the USPS for decades. Their chief tool has been to require the USPS to pre-fund its pension fund for 75 years into the future. The cost of doing so is what is bringing the USPS into insolvency -- otherwise it is making a tidy profit.

    Ewww...

If you're interested(figure of speech; I assume you're not), there is in fact a video in circulation that allegedly shows Trump directing prostitutes to urinate on Obama's bed in the Moscow hotel room.

From an analysis I read on Slate, the most plausible explanation seems to be that the video is fake, IOW not really Trump, but was filmed in the actual hotel room where those things supposedly happened. Which, in and of itself, is rather intriguing.

The White House Bubble Continues to Shrink.

President Donald Trump confirmed Friday that Vice President Mike Pence's press secretary, Katie Miller, tested positive for the coronavirus.

Miller is now the second White House staff member known to have tested positive for the coronavirus this week, after one of Trump's personal valets tested positive on Thursday.

Katie Miller is the wife of Steven Miller who is one of tRump's senior aides.

I think his main problem with Jeff Bezos is that he owns the very opinionated Washington Post (one of my favorite on-line newspapers).

And the bubble keeps getting smaller:

Eleven of the secret service agents who are detailed to protect the president have tested positive in the last week

    and

A personal aid to Ivanka T. is also positive.

I do pray that they recover quickly with no complications.

Not entirely accurate. Eleven Secret Service agents have tested positive for COVID-19 but we don't know what their duties were, and the Secret Service does more than just provide the Presidential Security Detail.

    Me too.

But I also hope tRump gets it and goes to ICU, de Pfeffel style.

I hope he gets it, spends a week or two in hospital with time to think. Then resigns due to ‘health reasons’. The perfect get-out scenario from a job he hates.

  • OhherOhher Shipmate
Unfortunately, "time to think" in tRump's case only means "time to plot."

  • I was mildly diverted by this snippet from a Guardian report earlier today regarding the outbreak of Covid-19 amongst White House staff:

'Trump “was spooked that his valet, who is among those who serve him food, had not been wearing a mask” and “annoyed” to learn that Pence spokeswoman Katie Miller tasted positive.'

I have put the relevant word in bold, and that was how it was speeled.

American shops want to open! Hair needs cutting. Demokraps don’t want to bite the bullet but that’s the price we have to pay. Some oldies will have to die. We’re in God’s hands, folks! Liberate America!

I see Pence has now agreed to self-isolate.

Reports are 45 was unnerved to find out that the valet who served him on Tuesday tested positive just after lunch on that day.

Is that a Trump tweet calling people Demokraps? That is incredible. Has he been doing that all the time?
  • Usually he says "Dems" which is bad enough. I can't pull up the above tweet, though--is it real, or has it been deleted? Snopes has nothing.

It only seems to appear on one site, Patheos, on what I assume is a humour section called Laughing In Disbelief. People in the comnents section are saying it's a parody.

For me, "oldies will have to die" sounded too good to be true, from the perspective of Trump-haters.
