22 mass shootings in January, but only 3 so far in February. Let's not hold our breaths though...
  • RooKRooK Shipmate
No way to prevent this, says only nation where this regularly happens.
(Updated with today's date, not that it matters.)
  • "The administration's only concrete response was to initiate a study and call for a day of prayer. As a minister, I take prayer too seriously to use it as an excuse for avoiding work and responsibility. When a government commands more wealth and power than has ever been known in the history of the world, and offers no more than this, it is worse than blind, it is provocative."
—MLK Jr., "Nonviolence and Social Change," 1967.

So much for thoughts and prayers.

This topic has broken my fragile respect for human kind. Again.

For humankind? Or for the US variety? Other humans seem not to go in for spraying one another with high-velocity bullets with the same, er, gusto.

The rest of us are contemptible in different ways.
  • Oh for God's sake let's not start the pond war again. <sing-song voice> Not all Americans are in favor of the lax gun laws we now have in place.
  • RossweisseRossweisse Hell Host, 8th Day Host, Glory
No, we are not all in favor of abominably loose gun laws.

  • Doc TorDoc Tor Admin Emeritus
Geez. You've barely been here half an hour.

No. No Pond Wars. And no mention of Pond Wars either.

What could we possibly add to the toxic mix of the current gun debate, to give it more pungency? Oh, I know. How about a big scoop of some good old-fashioned anti-Semitism? https://forward.com/fast-forward/395043/nra-chief-singles-out-jewish-billionaires-in-socialism-rant/ No one is more reliable than Wayne LaPierre.

Brenda - we are currently in the grace period while everyone gets used to the new software. Preview Post is more your friend than usual, and there's the UBB thread in Styx for practice.

Everyone else? This applies to you too.

Technically, BBCode ... a bit like BB gun. I don't expect the US to join in the discussion about regulating BB guns that most of the rest of the world considers appropriate.

That must be "fake news". Haven't we been told that all teachers are superhumanly accurate snipers who care more about their students than anything else in the world and never ever have any mental health issues? I'm sure this must have been fabricated by some anti-NRA PR firm to make guns look bad.[/sarcasm]

So now I guess it's cool for Republican presidents to advocate sending police into people's homes to take away their guns without due process [video].
Take the guns first. Go through due process second.

That's Donald Trump, with Mike Pence nodding along as he says it.

A service with bonus added guns -dedicating marriages and so on, frightening their local community enough that local school closed/moved for the day. Assault rifles and bullet crowns -serious levels of utter lunacy.

I know he has severe opinion swings, and thought swings, and reality swings. But this is boggling, :astonished:

I saw a clip of the meeting. He accused the GOP invitees of being afraid of the NRA, and said he wasn't! And more along those lines.

Only thing I can think of is that maybe the Holy Spirit managed to wriggle into his mind, for a bit. Whether the effects last until tomorrow...or long enough to actually get something written and signed...

Or maybe he's going to meet space aliens at Roswell, and they insisted that he make progress on the gun mess first.

Or someone threatened to take away his cell phone AND his TV.

    Flip a 3-sided coin/die. :votive:

Or a spirit of the liquid kind? The common effects in the morning include difficulty concentrating, hyper-excitability and anxiety, along with the headache, dry throat, and nausea.

I think he might have been clever. He's probably been told that the House will block anything which upsets the NRA too much. There will be some token change.

One of the Democrats at the meeting observed that deaths from guns in the US were at least 20 times higher than in the rest of the developed world. And there was no evidence that US mental health was any worse than in the rest of the developed world, So this focus on mental health, rather than taking a serious look at gun control, wasn't looking at the real problem. An observation which dropped like a stone and sank beneath the water.

It remains the real issue. And raising rifle purchase age, and removing guns from folks with mental problems, will not have a massive impact on the US homicide by gun rate.

But I suppose a bipartisan bill getting through Congress would be a start.

Maybe Billy Graham lying in state in the Capitol has had an effect.
  • Is he lying-in-state? Or is he, more likely, spinning like a top?

  • No, I am certain Graham would have been perfectly fine with the current incumbent. He liked Nixon, so he clearly had a tropism towards power. Being in the White House cloaked every sin.

MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op, in Canada, one of the largest outdoor and equipment stores has dropped all products connected with Vista Outdoor (which owns companies like Bell Sports, Giro, Camelbak, Serengeti, Camp Chef). MEC's never sold any guns, ammo or weapons, but has sold products made by companies affiliated and owned by gun companies. Not any longer. Some 12% of Canadians are members of MEC.

We can't do anything directly, but we can do indirect, like this.
  • RooKRooK Shipmate
Only 12%? Seems like 100% of Canucks outside of Canada can be identified by our MEC gear.

  • This shows you how politics tie into guns in the US: Russians join the NRA. You will recall that the Russians gave $30 million to the NRA, which then turned right around and donated it to the current president's campaign. It is impossible to believe that Vladimir Putin's cronies are doing this from disinterested motives.
  • No, I am certain Graham would have been perfectly fine with the current incumbent. He liked Nixon, so he clearly had a tropism towards power. Being in the White House cloaked every sin.

This was definitely a failing of his-- but one he readily acknowledged, and spoke of frequently towards the end of his life. I can't imagine him approving of Trump-- but then, he had more than 12 months to speak out against him and didn't. The fact that his son Franklin is so obviously enamored by Trump perhaps complicated things.

(*tangent* confirmation bias possibly at work here: as noted on another thread, I've always had a soft spot for Billy, despite his many flaws. Franklin, not so much. Billy really built up modern American evangelicalism, Franklin seems intent on destroying it*end tangent*)

@cliffdweller - just a suggestion, that if you want to explore the differences between father and son, a Purg thread would probably have traction.
