  • A great service at CCSL this morning to mark the 175th anniversary of consecration. You can probably get it on You Tube.

Was ++Glenn there? Any of his episcopal sidekicks? Or at least send greetings?

We stopped by at Betoota on the way to Birdsville last year. There's a photo of me at the town sign.

No sign of any on the screen and no greetings read while we were watching. Would have expected at least those from both ++Glenn and +Michael Stead, the regional bishop

One of the cultural imperatives when we moved here was to barrack for the NQ Cowboys. Especially since Jason Taumalolo and his extended family are members of my congregation. (So "The Lord be with you" has to be followed - after Aboriginal Waka - with the Tongan "Ke ia te koe ae Eiki", response "Pea Ke ia tekoe foki".) Then, Fijian, Samoan, Cook Island Māori, French and Italian, for regulars, and whatever other language group is represented by visitors. Our greeters brief me, so that I can have a quick shufti at Google Translate. Deaf as I am, pronunciation might not always be pukka. I had considered posting this (minus NQ Cowboys stuff) in Eccles, but the Blessèd Percy didn't have Tongans at Primrose Hill, so Eccles denizens would have no frame of reference.
Whatever, it's 24-4 Storm v Cowboys at half time 😥🏉
  • Lovely to hear from you @Foaming Draught

Bad form. Not WWJD. When we were at con evo All Souls, Langham Place, +Richard Chartres would regularly send encouraging greetings, his catholic churchpersonship notwithstanding.
  • +Michael Stead is being spoken of as the next ++. For a number of years, he was rector of Turramurra, the suburb next to us. There, he had Dyson Heydon as one of the 8am congregation. He had the reputation of tending towards old-fashioned low-church, although not as much so as Roger Chilton at Pymble (next suburb the other side of Turramurra) or Martin Robinson, when he was rector at Killara, a couple of suburbs closer to the city on the train line. Stead shows some interest in ecumenism, not a bad start.
  • Great to see you, FD!

The Coastal -Pacific train which runs between Christchurch and Picton to connect with the ferry to Wellington starts up again on October 13 (God willing and the virus doesn't make a comeback).

It's after the school holidays, which seems counter-intuitive, but great for oldies like me

I'm planning one way by bus - so I can see what's happened to Kaikoura since the massive 7 point something quake took out state highway one and the pool where the baby seals played

We (@clarence, @kuruman, @zappa and I) loved that trip. I spent the entire journey in the open "cattle wagon" at the back. Heaven. As soon as there's a QLD NZ bubble, it's the Greymouth train for us.

I've given TranzRail your credit card number to pay for it, so of course you can come 😊
  • Huia: The bus trip is super and be sure to go to the little cafe at Kaikoura where the bus stops for Morning Tea. I recommend the chocolate caramel slice and they have lovely tea in actual pots too

Bugger! I stuffed up my bookings, and am flying both ways. I realise Air NZ had $80 of my money so thought I'd fly one way, then booked flying up when I should have flown back because getting to the ferry in the morning from my brother's place is challenging.

I think I will do the more adventurous stuff after the Christmas holidays. (I've always wondered when schools go back in February when the weather is at it's best.)

Galilit that's the Forget Me Not Cafe and I agree it's brilliant. I once went up by Atomic Shuttles and they stop north of the actual township which wasn't great, except I bought a crayfish to take home to Mum who was very happy.

I'm not sure the slice would sell well under that title in NZ (or OZ). But then I guess ihe wasn't in the sales game. *Shudder*. But yes, that's the one. Instant heartburn for me so I've learned to eschew it.

  • I've posted a pic in Birthdays & Anniversaries. It's prob an egregious breach of Ship etiquette to post it here, too, so wander along there and have a shufti.

    How absolutely wonderful!

As opposed to the government of the big Island who, via Crikey, asks on the Job Seeker form if you share (and how) a bathroom with roommates, and if you are
having or may have sex with roommates, or if you are both free to pursue sex elsewhere*. Do we need to treat the jobless like this?
    It's paywalled...or I'd link.

    * relationship status determination: there are other ways I can think of, such as, "Are you in a relationship?"
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
"Crikey" seems about right ... :flushed:
  • Indeed!

And that is it -- thanks, FD.

I'm in Gisborne currently. I decided to drive part of the Pacific Coast highway on some time off. It is doing me good to get out and about. And it is stunning scenery. Looking forward to the coastal drive tomorrow and Saturday.

FD and Zappa - do you know that The Coastal Pacific and the Tranz Alpine both now offer a plus class? Apparently for people who are missing overseas travel and want to pay more for their trip.

My New Zealand holiday is definitely postponed, but looking forward to visiting next year, hopefully. Cancelling everything turned out to be really easy. New Zealand Air cancelled my flights anyway and have given me a credit I can use until December 2022, without me having to contact them or do anything. Everything else got refunded, with a small fee for each hostel cancellation because I chose to take money rather than credit. And my Tranz Alpine and bus tickets were refunded easily over the phone with no fees :). Everyone has quick processes for refunds and great customer service. I hope all their businesses survive the travel downturn.

That Centrelink form is crazy. Why not just ask if people are in a relationship? People are going to lie on multiple questions just as easily as on one if they want to. Also how many housemates have their own bathroom and laundry and how exactly do you explain how you share those rooms? Do they think you are a couple if you wash both housemates' laundry in the same load? Or they will catch up lying couples who admit they shower together? Very strange!

PS I'd really like to answer some of those Centrelink questions ... (FD - there could be a circus, heaven or hell thread there. Not sure which. Probably not Ecclesiantics, though ... unless ...

Not quite Bach, but our American friends still all fall for the solemn tale that the Harbour Bridge is closed to traffic at 2:30pm each day so that sheep can cross from one side to the other.

  • Well @Gee D there may not be a sheep graziers’ alert for metropolitan Sydney, but there’s certainly one for the ACT and thereabouts. The highest the apparent temperature has been in the last 36 hours is 3.4°C and it was below freezing from 4:30pm yesterday until 10:30am today. Spring has unsprung. Yesterday the weather was at least accompanied by rain.

Heading for one* here, too ... I might have to bring the neighbours' two brutes (a very rambunctious [see what I did there?] ram and his pregnant missus) to snuggle up with our dogs and turtles.

Heading for a top of 3C on Tueday. Someone kill me now. Oh wait - I see it's been modified to 5C. Tra la la. It reminds me of the days when I lived in Orange, NSW, still the coldest place I've lived in. Brrr. Grrrr.

*sheep graziers’ alert, though we just call them "Severe Weather Warnings."
  • HuiaHuia Shipmate
You need to come further north Zappa. Heading for 20 here. (which I don't really believe - I think the wind chill factor may make a considerable difference).

I wonder what the Far North Queensland variant of “sheep grazier alert” would be.
  • Cyclone warning.

Here it is 4deg. Not happy, and dogs are *really* not happy.
  • Orange is cold, colder than Canberra.

Yes. Still don't know how I survived there. I even used to ride my motorbike around in the dead of winter. I avoided black ice. But brrr.

A political reporter - this is 45 to 50 years go - described Goulburn as a "city of 20,000 people huddled together like sheep, for warmth". I still think Orange is colder.
  • Wife and I attended a wedding yesterday - but by Zoom. Both groom and bride were widowed survivors of previous happy marriages from which their respective partners had died. Wedding, in Eden on south coast of NSW, was originally to have been in February, but was postponed first because of bushfires, and then later because of covid. But patience ran out, so they went ahead this week. All legal as local friends and some of bride's relatives (it's her hometown) were there in person as witnesses in the small local church. And a happy occasion even for those on zoom.

My daughter is getting married in Victoria this coming weekend. Even with the reduced pandemic levels I can't be there as I'd have to enter two weeks quarantine on return.
  • That is sad, @Zappa. This week I married a couple on of whom was Italian and the other a New Zealander. No family could be present, so they opted for no friends but the two witnesses either. It was actually a lovely and very happy wedding, so I hope your daughter’s is as well.

P.S. I let the photographer do whatever he wanted (usually I try to tie them up as it were) as I knew how important these pictures would be to a sent parents. I was surprised they weren’t trying to, live stream or at least film it, but that was their choice.
