Mrs Bradley? Mrs - later Dame - Beatrice Lestrange Bradley, as originally written by Gladys Mitchell, was old, ugly and crocodilian (though the author gives her a beautiful voice). Miscasting to the max.

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries - I was racking my brains trying remember the name too. I rather enjoyed the episodes I saw - nice Sunday-evening TV.
  • Golden Key wrote: »
She also starred in a humorous mystery series. ("Mrs. {something's} Mysteries", I think.)

I loved Diana Rigg in The Avengers and I wish I had seen her in This House of Brede. I disliked Gladys Mitchell's books, so would probably have watched that series only for her.

My TV was taken out by a bookcase landing on it in the Feb 2011 quake in a triumph of culture over crass commercialism and though I bought another one reception wasn't as good as a subsequent quake meant the chimney to which the aerial was attached, had to be demolished, so I gave up watching.

RIP Diana Rigg. As a young teenager, I wanted to be her (well, Mrs. Peel, anyway), and I could never again watch the show after her character drove off with...someone. As a student at University College London, I saw her in “Jumpers,” and thought her performance far superior to Tom Stoppard’s play. I did like “In this house of Brede,” and there other programs. May she rest in peace and rise in glory, and may her memory be a blessing.

  • The Mrs Bradley Mysteries? Cannot remember the author of the original books, except her christian name was Gladys...

Gladys Mitchell. I have hate both the books of hers that I have tried to read.

  • I was never a huge Van Halen fan, though I recognised his truly gifted virtuosity, but this has made me unaccountably sad. Happy shredding, indeed.

    Likewise.
  • @Rossweisse Thankyou for the introduction to Doorkins Magnificat. I'm delighted to have made her acquaintance, albeit posthumously.

Oh, it was @Sipech who posted about her. I simply replied.

  • Canadian soprano Erin Wall has died, far too young, at age 44. We heard her here in Toronto in Arabella not very long ago.

That's awfully sad - so very young.

Just caught up with this thread and having loved Diana Rigg and In This House of Brede - I wondered where I might see the movie. It's on YouTube - I hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much Helix, I am in the the middle of a house tidying bout :confounded: and I will view it later as a reward.

I hope you enjoy Huia! It's worth the wait.

Thank you, @Helix . I saw that when it was new, and greatly enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing it again.

May Sir Sean have an amazing journey, and may he and all who care about him be comforted and blessed.

One of my favorite actors, in too many roles to name. I especially liked him {as Indiana Jones' dad) in "Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade"; "The Man Who Would Be King"; "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman"; "DragonHeart"; and many others.

    Thx, Sir Sean.
  • I have suddenly felt older, because I thought that Sir Sean would outlive me. The Man Who Would Be King.... such a great film.

Definitely my two favorite roles of his.

Alex Trebek (long time US Jeopardy! host) has died following a battle with cancer.

Bugger. For the most part, I loathed North American television, but both David and I were hooked on Jeopardy when we lived in Canada.

    RIP Mr. Trebek.
  • He started with the high school quiz show Reach for the Top. He seemed timeless. No one is. Canada and the world is poorer for it.
  • Unfortunately, Alex Trebek was never my quizmaster on RFTT. (I did have the great Bill Guest, however.) I was very sad to hear the news of his death this afternoon. For years he was my usual weeknight dinner companion.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. A monumental thinker who transcended the bounds of "Jewish" thought - he was a world thinker. While I'm not an Orthodox Jew, I learned a great deal from his writings. He was a blessing.

    RIP.
  • Patriarch Irenej of Serbia fell asleep in the Lord this morning. He was 90 years old, and tested positive for Covid-19 at the beginning of this month.
  • It looks like goodbye to the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico.

I know it's not a person, but I find the exploration of the universe utterly mindboggling, and when one of it's mainstay's begins to disintegrate..
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I absolutely agree, although the telescope has served its purpose well. At 57, it was built before Elfin Safety was really a Thing, and you can't really blame the authorities for balking at rebuilding or repairing it.
  • For those who follow sport, I see that the famous footballer, Diego Maradona, has died, aged only 60.

It must have been the hand of God.

  • David Prowse, the body actor for Darth Vader, has died at 85.

A link to the original Bristolian Vader. I love the comment about "they'll think he's some Scottish guy or something..."

  • Some will remember him as the Green Cross Code man. This is his real voice. Amusingly, his voice was replaced by a voice artist in a number of the Green Cross Code ads too.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
    I love the Bristol accent!
  • Buff Hardie, the last of the Scotland the What trio has died aged 89.
  • That made me so sad. I remember when I was a student in Aberdeen I had the joy of seeing them at His Majesty’s with an Aberdonian audience. They were superb.
  • They were amazing. Their jokes never grew old.
