  • Steriods? I think we're in hallucinogen territory. Bring on the mushrooms!

My best mate is single and lives in a tiny flat. He's going crazy during lockdown and claims to be eating those sorts of mushrooms and then streaming mass. He thinks the services would be better if there were more people on the altar at the end.
  • This is a mistake by Pelosi, as Trump can portray himself as a victim, attacked by these Dem gorgons.

Possibly, but that will only play to the rusted on at this point. She's putting the focus where it needs to be: on Trump. His greatest strength has become his weakness, I sincerely hope.
  • His current behaviour is certainly not exactly confidence-inspiring, surely - even to his most faithful toadies and lickspittles...

I think you underestimate his toadies and lickspittles in their desire—and ability—to twist reality to fit their hero worship.
  • Trump's disassociation from reality is causing the plot to thicken somewhat: https://theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/08/nancy-pelosi-donald-trump-25th-amendment-removal

Presumably this won't be necessary if Trump loses the election, but I guess they're thinking of a worst-case scenario.

Even if Trump loses on November 3 he'll still hold office until January 20. Two and a half months is a long time and a lot of damage can be done by an unfit president* in that period.

Some folks may be wondering what Congress can do about the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. After all, doesn't it have to be activated by the vice president and the cabinet? Well, here's the relevant text from the fourth section:
Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Pelosi's proposed commission is the "other body" that Congress may provide by law. The catch here is that this would have to go through the regular legislative process, meaning agreement from the Senate and either the signature of the president* or enough votes in both houses to override a veto.
  • Yes, I take the point that Trump would still be POTUS until January :grimace:

I also take @mousethief's point about reality-twisting, but one lives in hope...
  • He's still sick. The steroids mask symptoms. Let's see how he is in a week or so.

Personally, I would never wear a steroids mask. I find a regular one is sufficient.

Looks like even a majority of that "other body" would still need the Vice President on board.

The Vice President only counts in the Senate if there's a tie. Otherwise he has no law-affecting duties.

That's correct. There's no way around that under the terms of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. The text specifies " . . . the Vice President and a majority of . . . ". As the person who is going to be the acting president, the vice president needs to be involved.

There are numerous shortcomings in the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. This seems like a way to correct one of them that can be fixed with legislation.

Is there a possible work-around by public health officials? Putting him in forced quarantine?

There's news today that public health officials in DC and neighboring areas are publicly encouraging people connected to the White House to get tested.

I'm not saying T should be shipped off to N. Brother Island, like Typhoid Mary (though...). But a secure suite at Walter Reed, maybe, without Dr. Conley involved. Some other no-nonsense specialist, plus no-nonsense nurses, etc.

I doubt anyone would have the guts to really make it happen. But he's wantonly endangering everyone around him, and they're scared. If public health officials could manage to pull it off, without the Feds getting too much in the way, they might well save lives.

And it would probably be faster than the 25th Amendment.

I'd also love to see the DC and Maryland public health officials post "virus hot zone" warnings around the neighborhood. Couldn't get away with signs on the WH fence, of course. But signs on the opposite side of the street, and on neighboring streets.

  • You think we could, ah, lose him somehow? Take him on a tour of the sub-sub-basements and accidentally lock him in a toilet, or something? One with no wifi, though I'd be incredibly tempted to ignore the issue and wait to see what kind of tweets came out.
  • Trump's response to Gov. Whitmer
Governor Whitmer of Michigan has done a terrible job. She locked down her state for everyone, except her husband’s boating activities. The Federal Government provided tremendous help to the Great People of Michigan. My Justice Department and Federal Law Enforcement announced... ..today that they foiled a dangerous plot against the Governor of Michigan. Rather than say thank you, she calls me a White Supremacist—while Biden and Democrats refuse to condemn Antifa, Anarchists, Looters and Mobs that burn down Democrat run cities......I do not tolerate ANY extreme violence. Defending ALL Americans, even those who oppose and attack me, is what I will always do as your President! Governor Whitmer—open up your state, open up your schools, and open up your churches!
  • And you-know-who: Open up your unmasked mouth and, to use the medical term, shed virus all over the damn place, why don't you?

Have you perhaps seen the film/play "The Madwoman Of Chaillot"? It deals with something along those lines. Kate Hepburn was great in the film version.
  • You need to give him a promotion and a project to work on. A long one where he can waffle away to sycophants and made grand declarations. Set him to drafting a global constitution or something and tell him he's going to be promoted to CEO of the world. Should keep him busy until he gets shuffled of his perch.

Tell him that people want to study him closely to be able to communicate his bestest specialness to posterity.

Of course, don't tell him *what* would be communicated!

    That was indeed my inspiration.

The next several months aren't going to be pretty, easy, or (probably) non-violent, whoever wins the election--presuming that can even be figured out, agreed on, and acted on. There will likely be conspiracy theories from all sides, and a lot of disagreement over what *actually* happened.

That's before considering Covid; how the continuing, rightful push for the rights of non-white Americans plays out; Russia; China; N. Korea; the economy (both large-scale and personal); whether pro sports can continue; etc.

If the world pulls through this, future historians, students, and talk-show hosts will be saying "what the freaking *hell* was going on with them?"

It will be imploded altogether in January.

  • In the UK, the BBC has broadcast the first part of'The Trump Show' (3 parts), a wonderful distillation of the turnover of personnel in the Trump White House in 2017; next week come the events of 2018, all as told by the disgruntled participants. Not news to those whohave been following events closely, no doubt, but a helpful reminder to those who haven't. A competent demolition job, and as such, I suppose, unlikely to be accessable in the US.
  • I've just been watching part 2 on Iplayer - got as far as the Stormy Daniels stuff after Trump took women who had accused Clinton of offences to the debate with Hillary, about 15 minutes in. Can only take a short dose at once.
But what is the point of showing it over here? There are a few US voters, but they won't be the ones who need to switch.

I'm pretty sure anti-Trump reportage is allowed in the US.
