Surely the "exact opening words" of the service as reported by your Mystery Worshiper WERE NOT "Blessed be God: Father and Holy Spirit." The traditional words are "Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." It is not a good idea at best and blasphemy at worst to leave "the Son" out of the Holy Trinity. These comments are respectfully submitted by a 72 year old traditional though open-minded Episcopalian.

You are undoubtedly correct -- and on the Son's birthday, no less! I'll go ahead and make the correction, but perhaps the reporter will come forward to comment even though the report is nine years old.
  • Rather idiosyncratic debut, @DixieDean, but good eye, all the same. And as a fan of MWs, it's good to see people taking an archival interest in them.

    Welcome to the forum!
  • This is one of the reports that got ported over from the old Ship. Just out of curiosity, I checked the original report to see if Son was omitted there. Occasionally some of the old reports got mangled a bit during the porting -- special characters, odd bits of code, etc. sometimes interrupted the process.

Son was omitted in the original report also.

This really should have been caught during editing. Sorry it wasn't.

Well, can we entirely rule out that the mistake wasn't made by the celebrant himself? Though I suppose it would be likely that the MW would comment on that.
  • It's possible. Without "outing" MoboJobo, the Mystery Worshipper, I happen to know that he/she is a good Baptist but is not unfamiliar with the Episcopal liturgy. Unless MoboJobo comes forward, I guess we'll never know for sure.

It took me a couple of read-throughs of DixieDean's comment to notice that the Son was not mentioned in the first version. I am so used to hearing and seeing 'Father, Son and Holy Spirit' that my brain put the missing but in without me noticing its absence, no doubt the same happened in editing, the editor probably saw 'Son' even though it wasn't there.
