I visited the Pheasants Nest servo on my way back from annoying some Catholic monks in the Highlands for their Passion Play earlier this year; it had certainly changed since 15 years ago!
It used to be so grotty hardly anyone stopped there. Those were the days....
Have emerged unscathed from hosting Christmas lunch. I'm not sure why people insist on making things more difficult than they should be - especially non contributors. I REALLY want to just go to someone else's place and take a salad one time soon.
Have just got home after a lovely long weekend in the Blue Mountains with the kids and partners - great family time with walking, games, cricket watching and a feast.
Our church friends are coming over tonight - very simple affair involving me setting up some ice buckets and glasses and them bringing everything. Apart from the really nice bottle of red I plan on sharing sparingly.
If you wouldn't mind, if we know each other and you've changed your name since back-when, would you mind PMing me about it? Just trying to negotiate some strange…
(No, curly foaming climactic clarence, not you....)
And best wishes to you all from me too.
Especially as this time last year (ie. 2024) I was alive and in hospital only thanks to prompt attention by a well equipped local groundsman who saw me go down and had a heart 'pumper' machine (which he had in his car) onto me within a minute.
Happy New Year to all on this thread, we are a small but hardy band!
It's very fortunate @Tukai that your medical event happened near someone with the right equipment and know how! It's good to see you here!
How did people spend their New Year?
It was quiet at ours. Husband spent a few hours with his streaming community friends. I watched a bit of TV until 11.30 and headed off to bed. Other family members were doing stuff on their screens. I noted this morning that the celebratory fireworks seemed to be well attended and I was woken by the midnight ones, made a note but soon dropped off again!
We watched the Sydney concert and fireworks on the TV. Didn’t hear any of the local ones, @Cheery Gardener. This morning we went to Mass, as we had been informed that Fr Elderly and Kindly was saying Mass not too far away. Pleasant breakfast at a local cafe afterwards.
Happy New Year everyone! Back from the gym, which I would have expected to be heaving with New Year Resolvers. But no, 3 others, including a rehab stroke patient assisted by his wife, and me. Now to undo the good work 😉 🥂 🍷 🍤 🥩
Happy New Year to everyone from a ferociously hot corner of the Overberg! Bright -eyed after falling asleep before 10pm, thinking with nostalgia of all the champagne brunches of recent years...
I've had a quiet New Year, trying to sort out calendars and and diaries of different sorts in an effort to seem organised, which may even last the first week of the year.
I'm hoping my lawn mowing friend will return soon as the grass is at record lengths, but as he's out of cellphone reach I will just have to be patient.
I hope your friend returns home before you are surrounded by jungle @Huia I spent a bit of time yesterday doing our calendar and putting in the medical appointments for Cheery son as well as family birthdays. Good to have that done and the new calendar hanging up in the pantry.
I just looked at the link to your tickets @Foaming Draught - I think I must have had tickets to the very same event!!
This morning we joined the small queue at Lifeline and dropped some books and mags off for their next book sale. Good to have that job done and then onto a touristy lot of shops to look for a bird bath. We didn't come away with a bath, but a nice deep bowl that will hang in a tree. I'm now having my doubts as to whether the birds can actually balance on this to get a drink, or whether the whole thing will just tip and the birds will have an unpleasant surprise shower. Well I guess we won't really know until we try!
Thanks @Clarence, fortunately we have some washed stones floating around, so I'll definitely give that a go! The bowl is not being installed just yet, I think it needs a pole to hang on and I have found one to buy online, I will share that with Cheery husband later on to get his input on whether he thinks it will be a success (or not), particularly as he'll have to install it for me! I had thought of hanging the bowl in a pretty tree in our front garden, but have decided against it as perhaps it might be too tempting for passers by to shop for their own garden!
Waiting around for Cheery daughter to rise, as we have a short drive planned to one of the pleasant river nature reserves this afternoon. However, if she's too tired from work, or has slept badly, we might leave it until tomorrow.
Fortunately a lovely cool night last night, and I had the best sleep I've had all week!
Hoping everyone's new years have gotten off to a good start!
It's raining again! It's supposed to be summer here. I suppose in one sense I shouldn't be complaining. At least I don't have to water the new grass planted by the drainage people, but I would like even a smidgen of the supposed summer to appear.
Yesterday I got very wet as, according to the message on their website, the audiologist had their clinic open for emergency repairs - they didn't. and there is no shelter nearby. At least there was a very soggy piece of paper taped to their railings saying they would be open on Monday, but this time I will ring before I venture out.
Meanwhile the hearing aid that I think had water dripped on it is residing in a bowl of rice borrowed from a helpful neighbour. I don't even know if it was the water that makes it sound muffled of if my ear is blocked, but it's my right ear, which I depend upon most. Other than that. I'm hoping that it's 6 years since they were new, in which case I can get a subsidy toward new ones.
@Huia, has your audiologist discussed a cochlear implant? Mine, more than 4 years ago now, has changed my (and poor @Clarence's 😊) life. I should have had an implant 5 or 10 years earlier, but a succession of audiologists told me that my type of hearing loss wouldn't be helped by one. After I moved to Townsville and a new audiologist and ENT surgeon, I discovered that what that succession meant was that they weren't Cochlear approved or trained, and had to protect their conventional H/A revenue stream.
Glad the cochlear implant c hanged your life @foaming draught. I met someone that used to go to my lip reading class before Christmas and her implant has made her look so much happier. The aids I got a couple of years ago have been great but I'm getting to the stage where I need to go and get them tweaked. No one has suggested it to me but I'll ask next time I'm near an audiologist.
Happy New Year too you as well, @Patdys. Hope all is well with you and that you are surviving the current hot spell!
Very quiet day today at our place. Cheery husband finishing off jobs before returning to work. Finally got stuck into the ship's bookclub read of the month and could not put it down! Didn't feel guilty at all, too hot to do much else!
Back from Mountain Top ecumenical communion service. Twelve, including two Real Live(™) teenagers. Which might not look like many, but considering that the community only had 150 or souls at the last census, it ain't bad. Anyway, we're always being told not to concentrate on numbers. And the bar wasn't even open!
FD I don't think my hearing loss warrants a cochlear implant, as I have sufficient residual hearing for my lifestyle. If I were still working I might investigate it further. There was a lovely man, C , at the Church I was going to when I first got hearing aids who had one and when he spoke of it the effects on his life his whole face it up.
C also helped me make the most of my hearing aids and was patient in answering any questions, however silly they sounded.
The good news from the clinic today was that I had broken the
plastic tube at the top of the aid and it was immediately replaced for the grand sum of $20.
I will go back for my yearly check up when my usual audiologist returns to work.
Meanwhile I will buy a bag of rice in case I do get my hearing aids wet - it beats searching the neighbourhood foe someone who has some available.
I use probably use kumara (sweet potato) where you would use rice because I like the different varieties and tastes. I do have the occasional potato now, but avoided them for years after I left home as they were a mainstay for my parents. When I left home I vowed I would not eat potato every day as my patents did.
Glad to hear your hearing aid problem was fixed with minimal charge @Huia. I have a beyond date bag of rice on my bench, that I could send you, but the cost is probably a bit ridiculous to do so. We used to eat a lot of rice, but now that T2D has hovered around we've switched to brown rice and nowadays I only use white rice at Christmas to make my 3 rices salad. I have to stop Cheery husband buying pantry staples on autopilot!
Glad to hear your service was so well attended @Foaming Draught. For a small place that was very good.
Today is a slow day. Cheery husband and son have been out to get him his routine injection, Cheery daughter working from home and husband has taken the car in case it rains - I wish - only a few measly drops at mine, how about you @WormInTheGrass?
The hot weather has meant quite a bit of reading and I never object to that! As my coffee cup today says - You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me!
We had quite a decent little bit of rain yesterday evening, @Cheery Gardener. Mr WitG has taken advantage of the cooler day to hose out a whole lot of plastic pots from nurseries that had been accumulating at our place, and deliver them to the plastic pot recycling at the large Bunnings opposite the large Swedish furniture establishment. We also did some shopping at the new fresh produce place that is in the same general precinct.
After having had a cold since Boxing Day, I was finally able to go the pool on the weekend and walk in the water. My usual hydrotherapy people are having three weeks off. I was a bit worried as the alternative pool is not as warm as my usual one, but it was very pleasant on a hot day. Later this afternoon I will find out if it is equally pleasant on a cooler day. I have been reading “The History of England’s Cathedrals” and so far it is quite interesting.
Basmati was the rice that the diabetic dietician recommended to me because it has a low GI. That was some years ago so best practice may have changed by now.
Back to the audiologist tomorrow. I think I need a longer tube. This one is too tight on the sensitive skin at the top of my ear. That happened years ago with a previous one and they just popped in a longer tube and it was OK. I'm glad that they have 2 open clinics a day where small things can be easily addressed. Having the office on my bus route also helps.
i have also noticed that I am hearing more cleary since the new tube was fitted. I turned my hearing aids up when I was in the bus - and immediately turned them down again - so the tube may actually have been broken for a while.
I wish I could send some of ours @Gee D . The long range forecast had me wondering if I needed more clothes for weather in the high twenties and low thirties, but the reality has been only a few days over 25C and many in the mid teens and with much higher rainfall than usual. We've also had strong winds and the Interislander which sails between the North and South islands has had several rough crossings and cancellations, which at this time of year disrupt the travel plans of a lot of people.
Many moons ago, my default pizza was ham, mushrooms, sweetcorn and pineapple (please don't judge me - it was the early 80s). I haven't had it in yonks, but you're making me wonder - would I still enjoy it?
I only order a pizza once in a blue moon, but next time I might just do some research ...
I love a proper old fashioned cafe hamburger with pineapple, egg and onion and all the usual salady things. Husband insists on having cheese though, which is not on my recognised ingredient list. Do others put cheese on burgers?
I've enjoyed the last couple of days being cooler and have packed away most of the Christmas decorations. Still the tree to do though, as Cheery daughter is working from home this week and due to the amount of time required to do that might mean it has to wait until the weekend.
@WormInTheGrass the rain is totally eluding our place, but I am still holding onto hope for the weekend.
@Huia, I will definitely give basmati rice a go, it's lovely with Indian meals, yum!
I like it better than ordinary white rice too, so it's all I use for cooking now, bu I must get a bag of ordinary rice because it is more absorbent. I briefly thought of using kitty litter but it's dusty.
Tomorrow we head Up Country to the Hunter region with Biggest and future Mrs Biggest to taste and select wines for the reception for the upcoming nuptials (in May).
I think I have almost recovered from the excitement of Sunday's attendance at the cricket. Attending one day of the Sydney test with Biggest and Middle has occurred most years since they were quite small - it's a lovely time together. I was the wimp this time around only going one day - Biggest attended two days, and Middle all three. And all on someone or other's members tickets - I was pleased to be only shouting lunch rather than paying full stick for the seats.
Hope the wine hunting excursion has gone well @mr curly! Glad the cricket went off so well. I'm not particularly a fan, but can relate your pleasure to other things that I enjoy very much. Do they have nice food there, or is it ordinary but overpriced?
I have just paid a tremendous amount of money to the company that fixed the drains - well Natural Hazards the government insurance outfit that covers such things actually paid it - my excess was around $250.
I am so glad that's all over. The blokes who did the work were all experts in the various tasks that had to be done and they sprayed grass over the bare earth. Unfortunately just after they did we had a week of really hot days. and that, combined with a malfunctioning hose meant some of the seeds in the sunniest areas failed to germinate. I will deal with that in autumn. which apparently is a better time for sowing grass.
Sorry to double post BUT I have had a miracle! I wrote before about how the yellow rose I had moved and thought was dead had new shoots coming from it's base - well now it has developed a bud as well.
The other rose, my neighbour helped me move, Perle D'Or ( a Polyantha, like Cecile Brunner) also is showing signs of life, with new shoots coming out of seemingly dead wood. My lawn mowing friend is coming around on Tuesday so I am going to ask him to cut some of it back further to concentrate the growth in bits closest to the ground. Neither my wrists or my secuteurs are up to the challenge.
A bit of variety is nice and having some different options important for vegetarians and others, @mrcurly.
@Huia, I'm delighted for you that your roses are bouncing back ok, that's really good news!
A very sticky day today, good to have some rain late yesterday and our furry barometer has just run off to hide in the linen press, so I am assuming that some more might be forthcoming very shortly!
Cheery husband and I enjoyed a morning outing to the large green hardware garden centre and before that, I'd gone out early and cleaned up all the fallen leaves that blow in around the front door and under the garden seat. It all looks so much better and tomorrow I'm hoping to get some new plants into pots as we found some garden bargains on the discount trolley this morning. I was shocked to see how the garden section at the green hardware store was full of gaps. I guess some of their suppliers are possibly not yet back online after the holiday break. I don't know if any of their suppliers have been affected by bushfires.
I hope everyone is doing Ok during the recent hot spell. I was supposed to be having coffee with a friend today, but cancelled as I thought we'd be melting like ice creams in the humidity and heat. She can't do it later in the week so we'll try again next week.
However, that has left an opportunity to meet with another friend on Friday when it should be cooler. I've been promising to catch up with this friend for most of last year, so feeling relieved that it look like it should come off this time!
I saw your post about an immersion blender on another thread @Foaming Draught and I think they are the most wonderful invention. So many smoothies made for the boy wonder when he was unwell. We used to take our own in the suitcase to hospital, we relied on it so much!
Really glad to report our pond has a temporary respite from evaporation, but the furry barometer is still a bit on the glum side, I guess you can't have everything!!
Should be much more pleasant on Friday, @Cheery Gardener. Does the cafe have plenty of shade? Did you just get the big thunderstorm? Yes the immersion blender gets a fair workout here too.
I am looking forward to the weather being much cooler @WormInTheGrass. I support a particular cafe because it has outside eating in a courtyard with big umbrellas and a verandah outside the indoor eating area, which is pleasant too. I have a little dilly bag which I always take there with sunscreen, hanky etc, so I go well prepared.
The big thunderstorm came through just before 6 and it was wild wind and water running down the outside of the windows (and in those that I had open earlier in the day), gutters overflowing (not into the house, fortunately) and I half expected my rubbish bins to be tipped over and stuff everywhere - I was glad to see that had not happened, they must have been heavy enough to withstand the wind. I was a bit worried about our neighbours' trees as there was a huge gust of wind, but they just blew around but no branches down. We are fortunate to have underground power where we are, so no loss of electricity. The pond is now full to overflowing and as daughter is at work with underground parking, husband was able to put our car into the garage. We'll have to move it out overnight though (or I might be able to convince him that her car is more of a bomb than mine, and mine should stay in the garage.
Thunderstorm hit Sinny about 30 mins ago: high winds, bucketing rain and some very close thinderbolts. Cats horrified and hiding under couch. A good end to a hot and humid day with temperature dropping by the minute.
All safe at mine @Piglet and I hope that things are well with @Sojourner. Even though I'm not needing to use them, I am very thankful for all those who volunteer with the State Emergency Service, who go out in teams to help people who may have lost rooves or have fallen trees on their property or cars. They assist in all kinds of disasters and do amazing work. Employers are usually co-operative in allowing them to miss work to perform those tasks.
It's green bin day at my house today (garden waste), so no destroyed plants to deal with, but I remembered Cheery husband had chopped back a bush that hadn't made it into the green bin, so for the last half hour I have been outside cutting off the smaller twigs that have the most recent growth on them. Having done that and reduced the size of the branches, I've been back with the ratchet lopper and cut the larger branches into individual pieces and now, the bin is totally full, rather than half full on the footpath. Fortunately it's about 10 degrees cooler this morning, or it would have had to wait until he could do it at the weekend, but I'm glad to have gotten that out of the back garden and away.
All fine in my neck of the woods but major post storm power outages in northern suburbs, Central Coast and north of Newcastle. Add in train strikes and the result is chaos. Luckily a day off for me and back to work tomorrow. Luckily not dependent on train travel.
I'm happy at about 56° north - obviously 59°N would be ideal (Orkney ), but 56°N will do nicely. It's currently (at 7:30 in the evening) 7°C, with daily highs around the 10°C mark, which for January is very comfortable indeed.
Sorry - I suspect the thought of those temperatures is sending you scurrying to find your thermals ...

Wauchope will be one of my long stops when I loop this year. Was there in July and should be there July/August coming. Family connections, you see.
So the world better bloody keep turning.

@Cheery Gardener good luck with the birdbath - one trick might be to put a stone in the middle that is higher than the water level?
