Hoping to see two Shipmates later this month…!
  • We’re planning a trip to Sydney in August. (Well, we need to start planning a trip to Sydney in August.) Our daughter is running in the marathon.

    Very nice.

Sydney can be chilly in August so bring a few warm clothes. Spring starts smartly in September.

Good to know, thanks! I’ll likely have more questions as the trip gets closer.

I’d like to get away sometime late winter or early spring but that will depend on my work schedule - at the moment I am scheduled to be travelling for work but not to very exciting places.

We were in Belgium last year and that part of the world certainly deserves another visit. Likewise for Cologne and Aachen which isn’t very far away as the train travels. Or possibly Italy beginning in Pisa and working our way northeast. We shall see…

  • I did a lot of travelling in 2025.

The Lot Valley in France in April/early May.

Up and down to South Wales and to Hampshire.

A pilgrimage to Iona in early July.

A 5-day hike in Albania in September.

Australia for a month in December with family and friends around Adelaide and Melbourne.

I don't plan to go abroad this year. Instead I aim to develop my 'special relationship' with my Special Friend in Hampshire and perhaps go on a few hikes here in the UK as well as the occasional pilgrimage or ecumenical conference.

I'm off to Norwich at the end of the month for a Filk Convention - SF folk music. I went last year and enjoyed it so much that I signed up immediately for this year. I'll be spending a couple of days in Norwich after the Con, too. Last year they were in the middle of renovating the Castle, and this year they've finished, and I really want to see what they've done with it.
  • We are planning a family trip to Japan in late June for 2 weeks. Not the best time weather wise but cheaper and convenient for university schedules.
This was the holiday we had booked for June 2020 but had to cancel due to the pandemic. My sons are older now and both have partners so there will be 6 of us travelling.

I’m glad to hear that special relationship with your Special Friend is still A Thing. (I’ll admit I’d wondered, but didn’t want to ask.)

All the best to you both in 2026!

So is my daughter, but I have no plans to go myself.

I will certainly do a choral summer school in August, Early Music, in Lincoln.

Booking opens on Monday for coach trips from a local company, so I need to decide which to go for.

I intend to do a city break in Norwich at some point.

Wonderful! I’ll be happy to cheer your daughter on on your behalf!

Have you been to Norwich before, @Puzzler ?

I lived there 30 years ago (digging up the Castle Mall as an archaeologist for 2 years) but then moved away. I had great fun re-visiting old haunts last year, and I've got more planned this year. The cathedral is absolutely wonderful, and we used to joke that there were parts of the Cathedral Close that only appeared at night! Some wonderful pubs, too (this year I'll get back to the Adam and Eve!).

We spent a very enjoyable week singing the services in Norwich Cathedral in 2007 with the Cathedral Singers of Ontario, whom David had been invited to conduct.

ETA: Crikey - that's nearly 20 years ago!!

Interesting… we recently sang a piece that Kathryn Rose wrote for the Cathedral Singers of Ontario (ironically, a setting of There is No Rose)… it was premiered by them at Canterbury Cathedral but much more recently (2019).

Vancouver in May, Toronto in June, either Banff or Saskatoon likely in July. Nothing too glamourous forecast for this year.

We are going on a "whole family" holiday to Crete. My husband and myself, our daughter and son-in-law, our son-in-law's parents and sister.

It's going to be different from any other holiday we've ever had. Our holidays tend to be city based and heavy on historical buildings, museums and galleries.

In fact most of our holidays have been determined by my husband going to a conference, me going too as the trailing spouse, and much of the holiday spent happily apart. If I had to pick one defining aspect of holidays with my husband over the past 20 years it would be me, delighted with life, alone in a coffee shop engrossed in the local patisserie culture.

We'll be going to Knossos, of course, but also time by the pool, and various sporty activities, such as archery and paddle boarding.

My daughter's mother-in-law is almost a decade younger than me (9 years and ten months younger!) and is, literally, half my weight. We'll be in swimming costumes at some point every day.

It's going to be an adventure!

Yes, two or three fleeting visits some time ago but never stayed there nor been to a service in the cathedral.

Apart from that, my singing holiday and probably a coach tour, my family keep urging me to renew my passport and go abroad, but I have not yet decided whether I feel I can. The logistics of the journeys might exceed my stamina. Strangely, both my daughter’s husband and my son’s wife have offered for their spouse to go with me to wherever I want to go- but my son and daughter have not shown any interest in their suggestions.
