One has to wonder what the spectators felt about the service (I'm not thinking of the bargers-through)? Was it a numinous moment which brought light to mundanity, the celebration of an ancient tradition, or a demonstration of the Church's irrelevance to modern society? Probably all of them, and more!

BTW, a small area around the Cathedral, and therefore south of the river, was at one time part of the Diocese of London (long before the Diocese of Southwark was invented).
