    "Uriniferous" - well there's a new (but highly appropriate) word for me! I too have doubts about blessing things, but clearly the work of Bridge Watch does, sadly, need our prayers.

    One has to wonder what the spectators felt about the service (I'm not thinking of the bargers-through)? Was it a numinous moment which brought light to mundanity, the celebration of an ancient tradition, or a demonstration of the Church's irrelevance to modern society? Probably all of them, and more!

    All of those feelings are indeed valid, though some (perhaps unchurched) people might feel that the Church is, at such an event, rising above the trends of modern society.

    It’s not strictly correct that Southwark Cathedral is the “mother church of London south of the Thames” as a significant part of South East London is in the Diocese of Rochester

    St Magnus is nose-bleed 'high' IIRC, and Southwark Cathedral is among the 'highest' of C of E Cathedrals.

    BTW, a small area around the Cathedral, and therefore south of the river, was at one time part of the Diocese of London (long before the Diocese of Southwark was invented).
