Wikihitler

My son is responsible for this one.

You have a Wikipedia page. From there, get to Hitler in as few clicks as possible.

E.g.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog

Two Clicks - Germanic -> Germany. And there he is.

Lowest scores are the best, naturally.

Don't forget to nominate the next Wikipage

    I'm assuming that I'm being denser than usual (if that's actually possible), but I don't quite understand. How did you get from "frog" to "Germanic"?
  • I intepreted the rules as clickable links, so

    Gazebo —>
    Algiers —>
    World War II (where one finds, unsurprisingly, Hitler)
    (two clicks)

    Clicking links in the Wikipedia page. On the Frogs article there is a link to Germanic languages.
  • I think the last time we played this, it was "all roads lead to Philosophy."

    Slightly different premise. There, you click on the first hyperlink on each page, and see how long it takes you to get to "Philosophy". Here, YOU choose the hyperlinks to click, based on which ones you think will lead most quickly to "Hitler".

    I have a feeling the answer is always two clicks. This is worth testing.

    I was trying to get from Pi(the mathematical concept) to Benny Hill.

    Pi -->

    Issac Newton -->

    Voltaire -->

    etc etc...

    But I got a stuck on A Midsummer Night's Dream, which I assumed would mention the film version we saw in high-school featuring Hill as Bottom, but doesn't.

    Shall we take Voltaire as our next starter?

    Liebniz

    Nuremberg

    Nazi Germany

    Hitler

    That was rather more clicks than I'd hoped for; when I got Leibniz, I reckoned it would be one more click to Germany, but they listed everywhere in Germany where Leibniz had been, but not Germany itself. Possibly because in his day it wasn't called Germany ... :mrgreen:

    In The Death And Life Of American Cities, Jane Jacobs mentions playing a degrees-of-separation game with a friend as a teenager, and that they quit after realizing that Eleanor Roosevelt can pretty much connect you to any prominent person.
  • I was just starting to wonder whether the target word matters. For instance, can we get to pretty much any word within 4 clicks...
  • DoublethinkDoublethink Admin, 8th Day Host
    Why don’t we try changing the target word to Marmaduke Hussey and see what happens ?

    I just looked out the window of this store and saw a sign for Money Mart, a Canadian payday lender, so I'll take that as my starting point. Back in a bit.
  • Money Mart ->

    Canada ->

    Anne Of Green Gables ->

    Anne Of Avonlea ->

    BBC ->

    board of governors

    And there sits Marmaduke Hussey
  • Because there's a bottle of the stuff within eyesight of me...

    Clorox ->

    Brita (German-founded subsidiary) ->

    UK (Brita is sold there) ->

    BBC ->

    And etc.

    Persuant to my earlier comment, I think countries are basically the Eleanor Roosevelt of this game.

    @stetson is on to something with the role of countries in this game.
  • DoublethinkDoublethink Admin, 8th Day Host
    You get synecdoche from BBC ?

    If you start with "Synechdoche", "Prime Minister Of The United Kingdom" is mentioned in the first paragraph.

    And there's a standalone link to "United Kingdom" lower down.

    Oh - I think I misunderstood @Doublethink. She was trying to get us to go to Synecdoche, rather than get from it. I think this is basically a model of a UUCP bang path - you advertise the route to your obscure little corner (in this case, Synecdoche) from several well-known hub points, other people know how to get to one of those hubs from their own obscure corner, and so you're able to exchange email.
  • In the case of Synecdoche, you can ask wikipedia what pages link to it, and there's a long list, which includes some likely-looking hub points like Poetry and Religion.
  • DoublethinkDoublethink Admin, 8th Day Host
    Yes, I was suggesting changing the target, from Hitler or Hussey, to synecdoche.

    I don’t think a game like this really works if you use that tactic.
  • Okay, because I'm drinking the stuff right now...

    coffee ->

    Yemen ->

    Flag of Yemen->

    national flag ->

    logo ->

    symbol ->

    semiotics ->

    metonym ->

    And there ya got "synechdoche".

    A suitably long and winding road, but you can probably guess where Mrs. Roosevelt steps in.

    Nicely done. And no shortcut through countries.

    Was the Byzantium to Synechdoche connection the Yeats poem Sailing To Byzantium?
