This is interesting.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has elected a new presiding bishop, Yehiel Curry, current bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the ELCA. He was a mission developer originally. And, get this, the last parish he actually served is only a mile from the Catholic parish where Pope Leo was raised.

Must be something in the water.

Wonder how his background will inform his leadership as BP.

I realise the irony in this - in that it can by definition only happen because of your background…- but I’m a big fan of pretty well anyone who goes out of their way to not reflect their background!
  • Are you suggesting that a Pope Leo vibe will somehow be contagious simply because the parish where he grew up was only a mile away from this dude's place?

    I don't get that.

The fella who is now Pope Leo would have been at that parish decades ago. Are we to believe that he left something residual in the atmosphere?

Ok, I'm Orthodox and don't have any problem in believing in 'thin places' or shrines, relics (well, some of them) or 'genius locii' or holy places or the influence of Saints and other holy people being palpable or 'transmitted' and transferable in some way ...

But I find this a bit of a stretch.

Has the new ELCA exhibited any Pope Leo tendencies so far?

    Should he?

Why shouldn't the influence go the other way and the ELCA bishop's vibes beam themselves over to Leo in Rome simply because their respective parishes were only a mile apart.

Sorry @Gramps49, you've lost me on this one ...

This doesn’t appear to have anything to do with liturgy/worship practice, so I’m closing the thread.
