Excuse the double post. While I would caution against diagnosing from a distance, the other day, I noticed Trump seemed to be shuffling while walking. He also seemed to be struggling to walk up the stars into Air Force One (frankly, considering the height of the stairs I would have problems to). But there are always people who do play the game. And I know people speculate on the health of other world leaders based on videos too.

Here is one such speculation about Trump. Of course, this may also be reflecting the bias of the emag it is printed in.

Another childish reaction. Send him to bed without any supper. Put him on the naughty step. Tell him he can’t have Cuba until he behaves.

Bed without supper would probably do his waistline a power of good!

There is plenty to criticise Trump for without resorting to fatphobia or criticising his appearance. Using fatphobia to criticise Trump is still bigotry.
  • Much as I loathe trump, the amateur physical and psycho analyses are really not useful. I am close to trump's age and have been shuffling a bit lately. That's because I lifted something awkwardly a couple of weeks ago and probably pinched a nerve (again!) I'll get over it in a few more days.

Here's my attitude toward Trump's health as a political issue.

Until we are at the point where we know Trump is seriously immobilized and/or relatively deficient in his ability to construct utterances with semantic and syntactical coherency(*), this topic is best filed under "Cross that bridge when we come to it". To slightly misappropriate westminsterian terms, the opposition should always be at least roughly prepared to fight someone other than the current head-of-government, anyway.

On a more practical level, I've found discussions of Trump's health on other laymans' boards to be frustratingly inconclusive. People can talk about whatever interests them, though I'd personally think it more useful to follow discussions among health and medical workers, if any are to be found.

(*) By which I don't just mean that he says a lotta stupid and bigoted stuff, I mean nobody would even object to what he said in the first place, because his meaning would be impossible to decipher. The story about immigrant caninivorism in the Buckeye State would come out as "Ohio. Somalia. Lassie. Oh, Timmy, oh Timmy."

Going after Cuba is even more terrifying given how close the Florida Keys are - of course not that it would be OK or stop being terrifying without that, but Cuba is incredibly close to US soil. The Keys aka the Conch Republic also happen to be a rebellious (and extremely LGBTQ+ friendly) part of Florida that the GOP in Florida particularly hates.

Eek. In Tampa Bay, Florida, here. Other Shipmates are here in Florida as well ( @jedijudy and possibly others).

St. Erin, please pray for us!!
  • One of the rare opportunities for a laugh this week was when trump called the Iranian leadership 'deranged scumbags'. Thus spoke a great statesman.

Just so, and his various Orcs and Trolls (such as Hegseth) aren't far behind with their 'statesmanlike' (not) language.

What a ghastly crew they are. Earth, gape, and swallow them up.

The DOGE boys came across as such asshats in their depositions:

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/musk-doge-bros-deposition-chatgpt-dei-grants-b2938519.html

.. that a judge ordered the videos taken down because they could allegedly cause reputational damage:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/13/nyregion/doge-depositions-musk-lawsuit.html

ISTR this standard was not applied when Musk and Trump wanted to put government employees on blast.

It's often hard to distinguish between being an asshat and having been advised by counsel to avoid saying certain things in your testimony, though there is a lot of room for overlap between those two things.

Just as a general comment, if my lawyer advised me not to say something during testimony, I would follow the advice 100%, regardless of how much of an asshole it made me appear.

And as one who advised many clients to avoid saying certain things (provided, of course that could be done truthfully) in a deposition, and especially to avoid elaborating on “yes” or “no,” it’s quite possible for most people to follow those instructions without being an asshat.

Unfortunately, asshat is the default mode for some people.

I have a suspicion that the recruitment process (such as it was) for DOGE selected heavily for asshattery, given it was overseen by what one might term the big booty ten gallon stetson of asshats.

Could someone please persuade Trump that his solution to oil prices is to pivot the American economy hard into green energy and renewables - then the US would have to depend on no one else for energy. I feel one could appeal to his chauvinism and isolationist tendencies.
  • Alan Cresswell Alan Cresswell Admin, 8th Day Host
That would be a very sensible move, protecting the economy from dependence on foreign suppliers of energy and making much needed steps towards reducing our carbon emissions to protect the environment. Unfortunately, Trump seems to be incapable of doing the sensible thing and will stick with his support base (US oil companies are making massive profits at the moment with the boost in sale price without corresponding increases in production costs).

(add a big "ditto" for Farage and Reform in the UK)

The fly in that particular ointment is Chinese dominance of production, particularly of solar panels.

Although in this insyabcd it seemed a case of being convinced that they knew better than the person questioning them rather than a case of bring tongue tied due to lawyerly advice.

Simon Tisdall of the UK Guardian gives his view of Trump's folly:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/mar/15/us-iran-war-donald-trump-failure

The article ends with these words:

Failing, flailing Trump poses a clear and present danger to the US and the world. Take him down.

    Yes, but how ?
  • quetzalcoatlquetzalcoatl Shipmate
Tisdall has been absolutely battering Trump recently, but as BF says, how can you stop him. I expect he still has support.
  • Of course he still has support: the support of the millions who see him as their role model in the laissez-faire world of corruption and depravity of which they dream. It is working handsomely for the 6 January insurrectionists and for the otherwise unemployable now on the ICE payroll.

    You might say.

I think you are talking about MAGA (America First) supporters like me. CNN reports 9/10 in support.

And that’s his base. While I identify with the Republican brand, I no longer support the RNC as they have proven themselves ineffective, beholden to special interests and weak. But MAGA?

In ship’s terms— I’m fully on board. Deal with it.
