  • Whilst I am a bear of very little imagination, and cannot imagine why anyone would want to vote for Boris, I am very sure that Uxbridge is a very real place.

Yes, I know, I've been there! Many years ago, to a canalside emporium, to order a bespoke new stove chimney for the Ark. It seemed an OK place at the time...

But...in the alternative universe in which we appear to live at the moment, I think of Uxbridge, our Great Leader, and certain New Towns, as figments of the diseased imagination of Belial, or someone.

(Memo to New Towns - 'emp-or-ium' means 'shop'. A big shop, sell-ing lots of diff-er-ent items. The name comes from Lat-in, or Greek).

I can guarantee that Uxbridge is real. I have been there. Of course Boorish was parachuted in. It is a safe Tory seat. If the Conservatives put forward a worm it would win

    They did. And it did.
    :grimace:

Actually, IIRC from the previous election, it's not the safest of safe tory seats...so there may be hope for it yet.
  • On the BBC News Channel, the other night, I chanced on a screening of a press briefing given by Mr Mark Drakeford, First Minister of Wales, explaining the Welsh Government's cautious policy over the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in Wales for the immediate future. It folowed a clip of the UK Prime Minister's Press Conference when he expounded the national government's policy. The contrast was painful. Mr Drakeford's address was clear, measured, thoughtful, refreshingly free from waffle and bluster, and explained the reasons for the policy changes in unemotional terms. He did not over-egg the pudding; yes, his delivery was schoolmasterly, pedestrian even. But he was everything Boris Johnson is not. And if I lived in Wales I would feel confident that my local government knew what it was doing. As it is, I am English, and live not very far from Uxbridge. Need I say more?

Sorry, Telford, I wasn't keeping up with things over the weekend - I live in sunny (at the moment) Walsall.

Thanks for your response. Purists would say that most of the borough of Walsall is not in the Black Country proper but it's still a fine place.

No more need be said, really, save to remark that our Great Leader also compares very unfavourably with Nicola Sturgeon, and just about every other Prime/First Minister one can think of...

Alas! Poor Uxbridge...still, better luck next time.

I used to live very close to Uxbridge - it was a constant source of amusement to the Londoners around me because I pronounced it with a Northern "U" sound - to sound like them I had to think of it as "Axbridge".

Midsomer Norton is south of Bath, next to Radstock, and is a rather nondescript mining town in the Somerset coal field, now worked out, with a certain amount of light industry. What is the relevance of Nidd? or 'its own season'?

Nidd, in this case, means that on a lateral play when there are more green than sky blue pink chips in the kitty, a reverse shunt into any station in a seasonally named locale makes deep level interchanges wild for four chukkas.

Honestly, you'd think people would use google for basic play questions.

I was surprised to discover that it is not, in fact, a long, long way to Tipperary.
  • Of the three people I know of who come from Uxbridge; Sven, the delightful Samantha, and Boris, I would rank Boris third in any vote for a political post.

The multi-talented Samantha seems to have empathy, and the ability to socialise happily with a broad cross-section of society.

    Samantha for P.M!

I had to look up Nidd - it's a small village (population 168) in Yorkshire, near Harrogate.

I knew of the Nidd Valley, which once had an interesting, if short-lived, Light Railway, but hadn't heard of the eponymous village. O the joy of learning new things, that the Ship provides!

    *ahem*

Back to the subject of our Great Leader, he has damned himself further surpassed himself by nominating various cronies to the overweight and useless House of Lords.

It is as though (as one commentator says) he asks himself 'Who would be the most undeserving person to elevate to the Peerage?', and works on that basis...

    Interesting.

It's a reference to the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Cabin Pressure which chronicles the ups and downs of a very small charter airline. It stars Stephanie Cole, Benedict Cumberbatch, Roger Allum and John Finnemore (who also wrote it). One-off and recurring cast members include Anthony Head, Timothy West, Prunella Scales and Helen Blaxendale...

For reasons both too complex and too silly to go into here, the crew find themselves flying to somewhere that they are pretending is Timbuktu, and in order to avoid confusion (!) The real Timbuktu is referred to as "T₩imbuktu Timbuktu"

I cannot recommend it enough. It's worth listening to in order, starting with "Abu Dhabi"

This is mostly my point. No one is picking on you. You are being obnoxious and then whining when people respond appropriately to your obnoxiousness. You are the problem.

I appreciate my most recent comment was a little harsh and I hesitated for a quite a while before posting. However, I felt it was justified because I have repeatedly posted responses to you explaining again and again the problem is not that people disagree with you but your posting style. You make assertions. You do not support these assertions. When challenged on them, you play the victim.

The reason I asserted that you are a slow learner is because, despite me explaining this problem repeatedly, you persist it this posting style. An obvious example of this, is in the Heaven thread in which Lamb Chopped was talking about her perspective on conservatism - (whatever that means*). You asserted once again that Corbyn is a Marxist. You have yet to provide anything at all to support this assertion and continue to ignore all the points made by several posters that counter this assertion. Yet you continue. And in the particular Heaven thread you dropped this in when it wasn't really relevant to the discussion.

Do you see my point yet? I have made an assertion and then given you evidence to support it...

*See the thread for some kind of answer to that one...

You have failed to explain how I am being obnoxious.

Why am I getting all these insults. I have not insulted anyone?

All of your posts are insulting. And to pretend that you don't know this is itself insulting. Fall down a well and die, troll.

If I have ever insulted anyone, I must have learnt it from you.
As I recall, @Telford, you boarded the Ship already a journeyman insulter. I suppose it's not your fault that @RooK is so much better with words in general, and insults in particular, than you are.

I have to disagree with you. I have never intentially insulted anyone.

You mean you're an obnoxious tosser without even trying?

I am unable to reply to you in kind

Then I am further insulted by how clumsy you are at it.

I wouldn't worry too much @RooK - evidence from this (and other) thread(s) suggests @Telford is a VERY slow learner....

Now, you've got me doing it...

There you have it, another insult aimed at me.
Did we ever find out what the insult version of click bait is?

I haven't even bothered to look.

[Hostly winged helmet ON] No one is picking on you. There's also nothing in "the rules of hell" that state that you're entitled to act like a kindergartener, vocabulary and all. Please stick to the topic, as stated in the subject line. [Hostly winged helmet OFF]

Relax. I don't take all the insults seriously and I don't hold it against you.

Host Post: @Telford, I am entirely indifferent as to whether or not you hold anything at all against me, even if you somehow had grounds to do so. You have dragged this thread completely off-topic and ignored Hostly admonitions. Stop. It. Now. /Host Post

I am hoping for the day when historians are baffled that Johnson had any support at all...
