This is very odd. It is now showing as right at the bottom of the first page of most recent posts, and it is showing the last post as by me at 11:23am, even though I got a notification that pease posted at 4:28pm.
It is working, it sank because @fineline's post was behind the others. I've just posted and the prayer thread is towards the top of the recent discussions list.
Thanks pease. a year ago when new Ship was very new, I remember Piglet and I took trouble to make prayer thread fixed at top. Beyond that, I am not sure what else we did with new threads
A month or two ago, I had a few weeks when circles became ovals(horizontally) and squares became rectangles. It did not interfere with reading posts, and one day I switched on the computer and it had corrected itself. Between this morning and this afternoon, it has happened again and I wonder if anyone has any idea what it mmight be
I see that the screen is 100%, but I note that there is an extra line in the window and above the task bar with a little > at the right and < at the left where there is also a little gap.
Is this only on the ship? Or is it the same on other sites, or even across your whole system? If it’s true on other sites, or across your whole system, then it might be better to post your query on the Ancient Geek - Computer Myths and Facts thread in heaven.

Thank you for reply. It is only on this site. In fact, the other day Dolphin did a remote control to correct a couple of things on the SuperNova and I mentioned it. The Tech chap said he thought it was probably something to do with how this particular site is set up.
Anyway, fortunately it does not stop Synthetic Dave reading what the text is!
My Ship browsing habit has changed. Nowadays I usually go straight to 'Recent Discussions' and go back and forth between that and threads that I am interested in.
One irritating thing that I have noticed is that when I go back to the 'Recent Discussions' page it displays very briefly at the point where I left it and then jumps back to the top of the page from wherever I had got to. It is quite irritating. I think it happens because the software needs to change or remove the number of unread posts in the thread, and in the process loses the knowledge of whereabouts on the page I was. Is there any possibility of avoiding this?
Question: I was trying to tag a shipmate in a post. That shipmate’s username begins with an A, but when I typed @a, no list of usernames came up. Any idea why?
Some of these ship names don't work and won't come up - to get you or me tagged you have to use @ " then the two names " (without the spaces). One letter doesn't seem to trigger the list, having experimented.
@Curiosity killed comes up on the autolist with the first two letters Cu (also gives Curious on the drop down list). But, you need the speech marks if typing it in entirely - which you would need to do with a name which starts with a single letter followed by a space.
I couldn't get @A Feminine Force to come up without typing it in, I did try every which way. I did originally find @The Intrepid Mrs S difficult on the menu, but if you type "The" and stop without the space the program works. The minute I type a space the drop down menu is lost.

Yes, my name is one that requires quotation marks—though it does come up in the list if I type @ then “ni”—so I tried formatting the name that way. I also tried @ then a[space], @ then a[underscore], and @ then a[next letter].
When I’d click on Preview, none of these had produced a working tag.
this is not a question, but this seems a place to say:
I have noticed the ' Comprehensive list of smileys to use' and had thought, 'Ah, good, I can go there when I need a <biggrin>.'
I have just done that and the two posts therein certainly made me want to put <biggrin> here!!
Am I missing something? When I access the Ship on an iPhone I don’t see any visual indication that I have a PM. If I pull down the menu I can see if there’s anything showing in my inbox, but I’m only likely to do that if I’m expecting something. On the desktop there’s an inbox icon which gets a badge if there’s something in it.
I've found that one on a smartphone too - same for notifications. Although if you're online at the same time that the PM/notification comes through, there's a pop up notification.
Yes, same here. I can see an inbox notification on my iPad, but not on my iPhone. I have to access the menu on my phone, as BroJames described, which I don't usually think to do unless I'm wanting to delete a draft.
The mobile friendly version has moved some features into different menu items, the idea being that reducing things around the text leaves more space for posts to be displayed. On mobile devices screen space is a premium. Certainly in my case if the size of the text area was reduced I'd not be able to read a thing on my phone.
I don't suppose it would be possible to have a little notification circle appear on the menu square itself, so you know to click on it? Some sites do that sort of thing, and it wouldn't take up any extra room.
That would be OK if it only happened for the Inbox - I’ve nearly 2000 ‘Notifications’ and over 600 ‘Comments’. I’m not even completely sure what they are, let alone how to clear them.
You can set them not to trigger - I only get notifications for PMs and if I'm addressed on a thread - and that I set in my profile. I don't have a comments box, just notifications and inbox. Notifications goes away when you click on it.
In my profile notifications are apparently for notification by email and/or notification by popup. I didn’t realise there’d be a badge as well. Comments are apparently my own contributions.
BroJames, do you have selected the option for notifications for every thread you post on? You can deselect that. I select a few threads that I like to keep up with, so I just get notifications for those.
Comments
I've unstarred and "sunk" the old thread, so it should slip away down the list.

I was poking about in Ancient History recently, and noticed that the ‘1998 Launch Site’ link is broken. Also the A Brief History of The Bulletin Board didn’t take me to what I was expecting. Should it have gone to Tales of a Tub near the bottom of that page?
Finally, the link below that to ‘how the boards homepage* looked at that time’ also seems to go to the wrong place.
