Despite what Gallilit says, I still think you need to go, you need to be confronted by the horror of what occurred (the shoes are a poignant example), you need to be badly shocked and shaken. We all need to be.

Not everyone responds similarly to the same things, or has the same emotional or mental resources to process what they're experiencing.

Surely, the only people who need to be 'badly shocked and shaken' are the ones who can watch the footage, read the history, know the facts, and are neither shocked nor shaken already about these evils?

It's good Auschwitz etc still exists; and I'm sure it's post-war use has been profound, and has been inestimably useful in teaching vital lessons. But not everyone 'needs' to be badly shocked and shaken, if they already get the message about what evil looks like.

Regarding showing the newsreels in cinemas etc. Would audience reaction then have been very much different from our reaction now watching footage of Syria, Yemen, Myan Mar, Palestine/Israel on the news over our fish and chips at tea-time? I remember seeing the stuff relating to Pol Pot being shown when I was a teenager. And later there was Rwanda. Horrific. But, still sandwiched in between eating dinner and going down the pub, if you see what I mean? Sometimes distance is what gives us the perspective we need to really appreciate what we're looking at.

Well, hmmm. Encountering something horrific without preparation can inhibit processing in the initial moment of that encounter. But the time needed to adjust is not terribly long. Too often, time fades the horror. People who experienced the Holocaust are still alive as are direct witnesses. Importantly, so are the people to whom they have spoken directly to. Time will fade this from something any people could do, to something those people did. This exists already, time will strengthen it.

Been there. Both. Much, much worse. Aged 10. Too long to relate at the moment.
  • DD - that teacher should have been suspended at least.
