Can't we have one thread of just James Boswell and Martin talking to each other, and the rest of us can get on with our business?

I think they have one already.
  • Sort of.

I poke my head round the corner occasionally, to see if anything positive is actually being discussed, only to have Teacher rebuking me for not contributing anything useful...
    :grimace:
  • I’ve been trying to stay out of that one, but Teacher keeps taking issue with things he thinks I said that I didn’t actually say, and one does feel the need to try and set the record straight.

And yeah, Martin’s delusional arrogance in telling people he knows more about their own experiences than they do, which he has been called to Hell for before, wears extremely thin. Condescending indeed, not to mention inane.

I should have noticed many shipmates think he’s a twit before I engaged with him. Learned my lesson. It’s impossible to have a discussion with someone who’s incompetent. Knew that before, but now it’s been demonstrated.

I’m afraid my optimism keeps making me try again and again with Martin, even when my better sense warns against it. From what he’s said about his history church-wise, churches he’s been involved in (and gotten out of) would have done a number on anyone.

But he really does make it hard when he falls prey to the massive self-confidence that he understands things so much better than anyone else—which usually is expressed with something along the lines of “it has to be,” for no reason other than because he said it has to be.

  • He's a sweetie really. I reckon he'd be hilarious FTF so you could read his facial expressions. Please note that I have barely looked at the atoning Jesus thread, and nor do I intend to.

Yes, I fell for it last night. I suspect that getting us riled up is what he lives for.

Martin and I have both been on the ship for many years. During that time he has changed his mind about many things, which is good. What irritates the hell out of me is that he thinks that whatever opinion he has now is the only possible sensible one. Anyone who can't see this is a fool.

    Yes.

    And yes.

  • Yes three.

The dialogue between Martin and James Boswell II on the 'atoning' thread is becoming increasingly surreal, to the extent that it must surely qualify for the Circus.

But sometimes Martin comes out with an absolute gem - 'Incarnation = Atonement' really made me think (and he only needed two words and the 'equals' sign to do it....).

    Exactly.

Before the Dead Horses Corral is locked and shuttered, perhaps we could round up Martin & Friends and coax them in, to run around in ever-decreasing circles until they disappear up their own assholes . . .

Well now. Well well well well well.

A clearer C6 offence I haven't seen since someone accused Rook of frotting [name redacted]'s leg every time they posted.

Bluntly put, Martin's charge sheet is longer than a fully gestated tape worm and he's enjoyed (as have the Hosts) several extended periods of shore leave.

Be very careful lest you add to yours and find yourself summarily planked.

Why do you say that? Just because he hasn't been kicked out? Many of the PTB have expressed considerable annoyance with him over the years. But the Ship would be a pretty bland place if all the annoyers got kicked out.
  • I'm going to call a halt on this unexpected tangent. As usual with these things, accusations of bias by H&A is a serious matter, and if you want to approach that subject - without digging a pit for yourself first, of course - then take it to Styx.

There were a time when that was a real thing, me lad. Back in Ye Olde Days, on this Ship of Theseus before the hull were replaced an' the sails changed, Martin did indeed have his supporters. I were even one of them for a time, it's true; we though him our own curious, eccentric beastie.
But one can wade through only so much shit before one gives up looking for the pony.

This is the problem with trying to respond to you and your hostile, frequently absurd demands, Martin. You wanted numbers. I gave you some from the announcements, not pretending that they were anything but a quick representative sampling from one weekend; you came back with more unfounded nonsense about a church you don't know. I will note that none of the items cited (except the baking project) involved any parish funding; they were all paid for by the individuals involved. Most of them would be considered wealthy only by Third World standards, by which the majority of Americans could be considered well-to-do.

You're a troll. You demand all sorts of things from others, but refuse to provide any information or basis for your own frequently ridiculous claims. You fling around the insults and pretend to infallibility. You're here to waste time (that of yourself and others) and to make trouble and discord.

I'm done with you, at least in Purgatory. You can crawl back under your bridge and stay there.

I have crossed swords with Martin several times but have recently started mostly ignoring his posts. This came about because he said to another shipmate that he didn’t want the info they had posted because he couldn't use it to bash evangelicals. It didn’t bother me as an evangelical, I have had worse, but it is not how the Ship works. We can disagree strongly with each other. We can argue hard but we have to respect each other. What Martin said was not respect.

I admire you more than I can say Rossweisse. I trust you knew that anyway. You should have done on the basis of past interactions outside Purgatory. Here in fact. I'm most impressed by your church's low socio-economic status and its incarnational achievements. I do not despise the day of small things. I know how hard it is. How little a large, rich English church between two universities and a university hospital achieves. And claims.
  • And what, in the name of all that is holy, is that supposed to mean?

Martin, you’ll do far better playing video games on your own rather than winding people up online.

Martin, you don’t wind me up at all.

When you are incomprehensible I scroll past and when you are rude/unpleasant/cheeky/in wind up mode I also scroll on past.

It seems that you want to be seen as a deeply humble Christian christian and mess with people’s minds at the same time.

You have the occasional interesting, thought provoking insight, almost poetic post, so it’s worth checking if it’s a ‘scroll’ post or a ‘read’ post.

I bet you are nothing like this in real life. I bet this is an outlet to escape from all sorts of normality.

I think @sionisais is right - video games would suit your needs better.

Arguably he could do both. There are a number of MMOs that are popular with those that subscribe to trolling culture. Just go to the Something Awful forums, scroll down to the forums on games and pick your poison.
