The problem is that discussions don't scroll, they flow. Or at least they do if they work. Discussions formed by scrolling are disjointed and ineffective.

FWIW, I think Martin does often contribute to the Ship interesting ideas, poetic wording, and humor. Not saying it's always understandable. But I think removing him would, overall, be a loss to the Ship.

Interspersed with cryptic apologies, these thwarted (often hijacked) discussions go on and on and on. I think of him as a discussion killer and find myself avoiding threads on which he is active.

Good forum behaviour would be respecting others and the topic and the Ship by posting clearly what he means but he's never done that. He used to post (for several years) cryptically, making no effort to engage with others in the spirit of a discussion board, and mostly does the same now, still expecting everyone else to make the effort to understand him.
He's not a fool, just an attention-seeker. His posts are rarely worth the effort of reading so it's quicker to scroll past and not respond to him.

I don't know if it deserves a respectable word like "tangent." He often derails a topic by calling attention to himself. The are often phrased in an opaque manner. Others can't resist joining in. The result: long breaks in a thread that are essentially about Martin. I know nothing about his motives or the possible causes (and frankly I don't care).
I missed the edit window but wanted to add that I have enjoyed and learned much from the discussions on SofF, even though I rarely post. I have come to care about so many posters and to feel that in some weird but real way that I know many personally. (Boogie, you are definitely in that category.) Maybe that is why I am getting so fed up with the inordinate attention paid to Martin and a few others like him.
