existential yowling at the full moon works for me.

Have to wait till Dec. 11 here for that. Oh, dear. Deferred gratification: how oppressing!
  • This thread is getting too silly. Knock it off, all of you.
  • Ooh, oppression! but still... I think it needs to be on account of some trait or characteristic. Surely you can loathe me for some particular reason???

Your initials are L.C., same as Lon Chaney. Isn't that enough?
  • True confessions: I have no clue who Lon Chaney is. I gather he is some celebrity or another? That whole world is basically cut off to me, because I am faceblind, and so actors, etc. are complete mysteries to me. When they change their clothes, they become new people to me. Which makes it darn hard to participate in lunchroom conversations.
  • My wife is also faceblind. Not a big movie fan. I'm not a big movie fan for other reasons. We both enjoy live theatre because they go out of their way to make it obvious who the characters are from scene to scene. Our local Shakespeare-in-the-park company does this exceptionally well.
  • Yes indeed! We (friend, kid, and me) go to a lot of plays. They work better for me, because the main characters rarely change clothes, and the cast is so much smaller. And of course when it's Shakespeare, I know the story already...
  • So I looked him up... early film actor, known as The Man of a Thousand Faces. Different appearance in every movie. Oddly appropriate, I suppose...

Move easily? That's what your flying horse is for.
It's hard to sit a horse properly when your pelvis and hip have crumbled, but I do my best.

  • Hugs to Ross!

Can Odin make you a flying sedan chair, carried by two beefy Vikings?
  • And of course when it's Shakespeare, I know the story already...

May I be oppressed by the appalling elitism evinced by your comprehensive knowledge of Shakespeare?

You may be oppressed by my doctorate in Renaissance English! (Also, I know ALL the dirty words and phrases)

    Good thought. I'll ask!

  • Oppressing the beefy Vikings might make a pleasant pastime. ;)

Archaeology shows some Vikings invaded the small island where my ancestors lived about a thousand years ago. My ancestors slaughtered them.
  • You can be proud of your family tree!
  • Well, left-leaning UK shippies, here comes our chance to be a bit more oppressed than we had perhaps been hoping.
  • Yay?

    Bugger. Commiserations.😡
  • Amen.

    Damn, damn, damn.
  • Yes, I'm feeling very oppressed now.
  • Also not so leftist Europhiles, and my son's many classmates who don't speak English at home.

Have we become oppressed enough yet?
  • I'm Canadian. We apologize for being oppressed.
  • For oppression in French, please press 2.

    Or go to France.

Für eine Unterdrückung auf Deutsch drücken Sie bitte 3. (For oppression in German, please press 3.)
  • Not in Canada. We only offer oppression in two official languages.
  • Despite You-Know-Who, the U.S. has no official language--and so you have your choice of oppressions in whatever form you wish them.

We have lots of options! Para opresión en español, presione 4. (For oppression in Spanish, press 4.)

    Sounds kinky. I like.
  • Need more oppression? Call your car insurance company to follow up a claim. Press any number you like. They'll either refer you to a different department or just cut you off and make you start again.

And with passive aggression! Last year I was in a corner of Ontario with a large francophone minority. I had to contact a number of different agencies to arrange for my father's home care. One agency had a recorded message in English, "For service in French, please press 2." Yes, we offer French-language service, but we'll offer it to you in English.

NZ has NZ Sign as an official language (besides English and Maori). It wouldn't work on a land-line but there would probably be a suitable app for smartphones.
  • I don't know what the Gaidhlig is for oppression but I'm sure it involves curses against Campbells and Sassenachs.

I am a gay man in a very red US state (Kansas), I am a priest in what is commonly referred to as a "Vagante Church" on this board. I am a liberal in a raving Red family. Do I win any prizes for these???
  • I am oppressed because I have no idea what "vagante" means...

I am oppressed by people posting on the internet, the greatest creation in human history for finding things out, that they don't know things.
  • I'm oppressed because I have never seen anybody on the SOF use the word "vagante" until just now.
  • The term sounds sexual. That oppresses me.

I am oppressed because I just googled "vagante" and came up with all kinds of weird sh*t

'Vagante is an action-packed platformer that features permanent death and procedurally generated levels. '

OK...I think it might be something like this ... as a church.
  • Vagante as in "episcopi vagantes" (wandering bishops, if memory serves), perhaps?
  • finelinefineline Kerygmania Host, 8th Day Host
Episcopi vagantes and clerici vagantes was what I found from googling 'vagante church.' Wikipedia articles on both - I found it interesting.

Sounds like some obscure rural disease, as in "my sheep's off her feed with a case of wandering bishops".

Wouldn't know about that here. They don't allow Bishops in These Parts. Presumably sheep get wandering elders instead.
