  • Thank you for replies. I might give it a try!

Sorry friends, but I really dislike what has happened to the ship. It is so much more difficult to navigate and I feel that I no longer know any other shipmates. I really don't understand why the change has been made and am not sure that I will stay.
  • As has been said several times, we had been operating on ancient, unsupported software that was creaking at the seams and taking a lot of effort to keep afloat. The magazine section was not much better than the boards. We have been looking for several years at upgrade options for the whole Ship, that will give us a platform for sailing forward and allow us to integrate all we do in a more accessible manner. Obviously we've only got the boards up and running, the rest of the Ship will follow as soon as we can get it going. The only alternative to not changing was to sail on with the old software for a year or two before we finally sink beneath the waves.

We're sorry you're not finding this platform intuitive. Others have commented about how much easier they find navigating, and we certainly have more options for getting around the boards. When we've finished work on the rest of the Ship it is our intent to review feedback here and see what changes may be desirable and achievable.

The majority of users here have moved over, and were frequent users on the old boards. We've had some lurkers and recently inactive people start to contribute, some of them really old hands coming back. Some people have, like you, taken the opportunity to change their username which we know may make it difficult to know them from their posts on the old Ship. It will simply take time to get to know people anew, not that different from getting to know new people who registered on the old Ship.

With experience I find that some of my early difficulties are gone. The new Quote, Edit, and Preview functions are big improvements. I still miss the old emoticons. Typing in a code is awkward, and I notice that no one now uses them.
  • Now that we have had time to settle into our new quarters, is it possible to say whether the change has affected the level of activity on the Ship? My impression is that things are busier now than they were on the old boards.

I don’t have any hard statistics to back it up, but that’s an impression I share.
  • It certainly feels busier than the previous boards have been for several years. Though we still seem to be a lot less frantic than our peak 15ish years ago.
  • At first, the new start seemed slow, but that was because the boards were so empty. There seems to be a healthy spread of busy discussion now, which is very satisfying. I think it's probably only those who can't remember how relatively thin the original discussion boards were who would be troubled by the understandable time it took to get established again. The New Ship is now well set up for an exciting future.

In our first full month on the new forums (March) we delivered 1.78m pages.

That compares to an average of 1.52m pages per month delivered on the old Ship of Fools bulletin boards in 2017.

So it looks like we’re marginally up on last year, which is great to see. It looks like April will see the same sort of figure as March.

    Thanks for the update!

Can you tell us more about how the rest of the site is coming on?
  • SimonSimon Editor
We're 90 percent there, Eutychus, but the remaining 10 percent has been complicated, because of the complexities of getting the Mystery Worshipper section finalised. We are in the last stages of doing that now, and are about to contact all our reporters to ask them to register with the new system. I can't give a date yet for when everything will go live, except to say that it's more likely to be May than April. I'll post an announcement here in the Styx when we're a week away from launch.
  • Wonderful news, Thanks Simon.
