    Rather localised, but I think John Crosbie, former Cabinet minister and Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador deserves a mention.

    He was indeed very outspoken, but a fiercely proud Newfoundlander.

    May he rest in peace.
  • Neil Peart - inspirational drummer with Rush has died. 67 feels young, even for a rock musician.

    Sir Roger Scruton right wing political commentator has just died. Was he on anyone's list?
  • Buck Henry, comic genius, died yesterday, age 89.

    Buck Henry discusses Uncle Roy.

    TRIGGER WARNING
    A pedophiliac babysitter, played by Henry, takes lewd photos of the kids he's supposed to be babysitting, played by adult actresses hamming it up as little girls. Not much more to it than that.

    Interesting that he admits he had to have "rationalizations" for doing that skit. I do think he's probably correct about the presence of "Uncle Roys" in other families being a conversation that people needed to have at that time.

    He also wrote The Graduate, which is pretty major. I'd have to say that To Die For is my favorite script of his, though that probably has more to do with Gus Van Sant than with Henry.

  • No link, (wiki says unconfirmed), but Christopher Tolkein - son of JRR, who published significant amounts of his fathers works postumously - has apparently died, aged 95.

    Shouldn't that be 'passed beyond the Grey Havens and set sail for for the Undying Lands'? Or should that be something that might be more like 'Grá Griðastaðir'?
  • Derek Fowlds, Sir Bernard Woolley of Yes (Prime) Minister fame has gone. I loved that programme, and I'm not sure it's lost anything over the years...
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
    It absolutely hasn't - and Mr. Fowlds' character often got some of the best lines.

    May he rest in peace.
  • Sir Humphrey: Inert means that it is...umm...not...ert.
    Bernard: Wouldn't ert a fly.

    :mrgreen:

    Sir Humphrey: Have you ever been surveyed, Bernard?

    Bernard: Yes - well, not me - my house ... oh, I see what you mean.
  • Televangelist Jack Van Impe has died. He spent most of his adult years telling people to live in fear.
    Every week for more than 30 years, Van Impe appeared on TV as the host of his own half-hour show, Van Impe Presents, offering eschatological commentary on current events. Alongside his wife Rexella, Van Impe read the latest headlines and explained how they connected to prophecy about the Antichrist, one-world government, and the rapture of true believers that might happen at any moment.

    Spending more than thirty years preaching about the imminent end of the world shows both a strong sense of dedication and a complete lack of self-reflection.
  • BBC reporting that Terry Jones is dead. I am bereft. I can feel the tears coming. On phone so no link.
  • Terry Jones has joined the parrot and shuffled off this mortal coil. I know he wasn't in that sketch but I can't wait for Palin or Cleese to go.
  • This Python is no more....
  • 😳 I thought Terry Jones had already died. Mea culpa.

    I think that's 23 points apiece for:
    @Schroedingers Cat
    Me
    @Simon Toad
    @Priscilla
    @Spike

    Unless he's only resting...

    I've lost track. Does that mean that there is a 5-way tie for the Opening Kickoff Award?
  • I'm devastated to hear that. I was lucky enough to see the entire MP crew live back in the 70s (and I've seen a couple of the remaining members more recently). I need to decide with MP DVD to watch this evening in memory of Mr. Jones.

    Terry Jones: Writer, actor and director. A man who never saw himself as a comedian but was indeed a great comedian. RIP.
  • Monty Python was but one strand. His historical documentaries were a breath of fresh air, humourous, informative and almost guaranteed to make a chance viewer want to see more. Tragic that the variant of dementia he had deprived him of speech.

    In some of his own words, not the Messiah but a very clever boy.

    The BBC were kind of declaring the Life of Brian his masterpiece earlier.

    Yes indeed, a five way tie for Opening Kickoff.

    1 Simon Toad 23 1 0

    1 Spike 23 1 0

    I don't know if anyone had him, but former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon has died.

    Mr. Mallon was that rarest of breeds, a decent politician. RIP.
  • Actually, my favourite was Mr Creosote. While it received a lot of stick when The Meaning of Life appeared, I think that that scene was a brilliant Juvenalian indictment of Thatcherite capitalism, and arguably more broadly than just that.

In his gross, self-destructive consumption, his profound vulgarity, and his unthinking contempt for those who make his being possible (e.g., puking on the cleaning lady) Creosote is an avatar of capitalism militant.

    Yes, I am being serious.

    ^ Okay, so far, I'm not seeing that reported anywhere but TMZ, which I'm not sure is a credible source. His wiki page says he's dead, but their only source seems to be TMZ, and the page is now locked. Stay tuned, I guess.

    The New York Post (a semi-tabloid) also has the story, as does a local television station.
  • Interesting, because MSNBC(I think it was) has a story about the LA helicopter crash, but nothing about Bryant being on board.
  • A source slightly more reliable than TMZ or the New York Post confirms his death.
  • I've had emails about his death (as well as his daughter's) from the New York Times and the Washington Post. Trump calls them fake news, but most people consider them highly reliable.

    Here we go again. No doubt in my mind Kobe did rape the young woman. The article does say that after she had shown him to his room, Kobe asked her to give him a tour of the motel. He then asked her to come up to his room (she consented). While there she again consented to flirting and kissing. Then he started to grope her which she did not consent too.

    Wiki reports that while he was arrested for sexual assault, the charge was eventually dropped when the victim refused to testify.

    However, Kobe did issue the following statement:
    Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.

    The victim did file a civil suit, which both parties settled out of court.

    Apparently, he did not understand "no" means "no." I know that at the university I work at the frat boys are now taught that at any point during a romantic encounter, if the partner says "no," it means "no." Likewise, the women are told to be more assertive of what they are willing to do or not do.

    In reality, I think any celebrity we can think of will have something in their past they are not proud of. The two exceptions to that might be Jesus and Fred Rogers.

    "Here we go again"?
    Explain this.

    Also explain what you mean by Jesus and Fred Rogers. I accept that most celebs have done things they're not proud of. Your comment seems tone deaf, unless you meant something else: most of them have not raped or pressured others into sex. Most may have misbehaved, as you and I have (unless you haven't: I have), but I've never committed any form of criminal violence, sexual or otherwise. I believe only special people can rape, because they must diminish the humanity of the person to nothing when they violate their body with a part of their body. I don't think being a frat boy means anything other than entitlement and something about misogyny and rape culture.

    Victims file lawsuits because they don't have to submit to cross examinations which are parts of criminal trials, which are basically legalized assaults if you've ever observed one. No compassionate person could not understand the need to avoid such reliving of a rape. Perhaps you didn't understand the difference?

    As Evan Rachel Wood, an actress who has discussed her own experience of sexual assault, stated on twitter (and has been lambasted for it)
    What has happened is tragic. I am heartbroken for Kobe’s family.
    He was a sports hero. He was also a rapist.
    And all of these truths can exist simultaneously.

  • "Here we go again"?
    Explain this.

    On another thread, there was a very long discussion about a famous singer who did something sexually inappropriate. That was what I was referring to.

    I fail to see how you can say I am tone deaf. I acknowledged he raped a 19-year-old woman. I summarized what I understand what happened. He himself was very specific in acknowledging what he did was wrong. I grant that the victim may not have wanted to submit to cross-examination in a criminal case.

    That said, when the victim filed a civil suit, both parties came to a mutually agreed settlement out of court.

    To my knowledge, no other person has come forward saying Kobe also raped her, unlike Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein, or Epstein.

    I am a firm believer in restorative justice. Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders. This can lead to transformation of people, relationships and communities.

    I look at the settlement between Kobe and his victim as an example of restorative justice. He admitted he was wrong. He worked with his victim to reach a civil settlement. He was very active promoting youth sports. He was very close to his family.

  • I agree that restorative justice is a very important idea. I don't know of Kobe or the allegations.
