Our (oil) boiler, which has chosen today not to light. Normally this means that Mr. S has to go out to the far end of the house, unlock the casing and press the reset button - but today the reset button has not popped out.
Since in the summer we couldn't find an engineer to come and service the wretched thing, heaven only knows what will happen now
The Blessed Mr S fixed it! After a long search in the User's Guide, he located a second reset button (wtf?) and the boiler fired right up!
Now we just have to remember that Useful Tip for next time...
I was sitting in the community centre café talking to Father F***wit one morning when his mobile rang. Without a word of apology, he answered the call (it was Lovely Wife), leaving me in mid-sentence.
I wonder if we don't need a whole new set of manners built around mobile phone etiquette.
20 years too late, I'm afraid. Of course a person who's on the phone knows for a fact that no-one nearby can hear them. Nor do partying, music or DIY sounds go over a fence.

This time I sent them a welcome email saying that since they would be self-isolating for 7 days, please let me know if they need anything and I would get the volunteer team into it. With a rider that the team is for keeping the whole community safe. They won’t know about the level of local feeling on this matter.
Also, I know that they are not registered with a local doctor, so if they get ill, they will be outed as those who think the rules do not apply to them. (And two of them are lawyers!). Scots have been told not to relocate to second homes in words of one syllable.
Local Bobby? Nearest police station is 20miles away. Anyway, I like these people. They are part of the church community in their normal visits. I guess I am just disappointed in them: I expected better.

Only seven days? Here, in Canada, it is fourteen and that is only if you can convince them at the border between provinces that your journey is essential. Anyone relocating to their summer home is sent back.

History is actually a really good subject for learning evaluation of sources, or at least it was until people who Thought They Knew Better thought it should be more about memorizing details than understanding how we reliably ascertain those details.
Twenty days is the minimum those people would have to completely stay at home here. The general, country wide

I have had symptoms for nearly 3 weeks, including cough, sore throat, fatigue (first week), chest pain and shortness of breath (second and third week) then fatigue again, but have not had a fever.
Office phone etiquette, too. Years ago, I was in a doctor's private office (not an exam room) to go over some stuff. Doc got a call from a patient, and *took the call with me there*! And discussed personal matters with the patient. And didn't wave me off. IIRC, I finally walked out and waited elsewhere in the clinic.

Our equivalent was probably The Minister of Health breaking the rules of the lockdown, driving to a suitable place so he could ride his Mountain bike. I can understand him wanting a ride to get away from it all, I have a brother who was tempted to do the same thing, but the rules here are that cars only be used for essential travel, to exercise locally and not to do any exercise that could result in an accident thus putting extra strain on emergency services.

I think the "do not travel" advice, and what is meant by "unnecessary", haven't really be emphasised enough.
I can see that if you have two, or more, 'homes' you could think that you are OK to use either or both, and if you get into your car at one, and get out of it at the other you are not in contact with anyone else. To most of us it is common sense to stay in your primary home, or the one where you happen to be when the lockdown starts.

I think that some people are not thinking clearly at the moment, whether through panic, an inability to think about the impact of their behaviour on other people or a sense of their own entitlement.
In the queue at the local pharmacy a man failed to obey the 2 metres separation rule, When a woman challenged him he said, "I'm OK." She said that she wasn't sure that she was, and he moved back so fast it was comical.
She has. I can't imagine why she and her family were so brainless as to go to their country house - it's not as if she's stupid.

And if that does happen, then conveniently (and this, I think, is a coincidence) the next in line after the Cambridges is in the USA - a long, long way away.

While doing my shopping run this morning I nearly crashed the vehicle. Right across the drive to a cottage occupied by a couple in their 80s was a vast pile of rubbish: 2 mattresses, cooker, washing machine, 'fridge plus assorted split bags of domestic waste.
I sent the unexpected house-guest to get the couple's shopping list while I called police and council.
We delivered the stuff later on foot and will wait to see what happens about getting the mess cleared up. And we'll be paying for that out of Council Tax
I thought for a moment that perhaps the elderly couple had made good use of their self-isolation by a Major Decluttering exercise, but I see what you both mean.
Hopefully the culprits will be discovered (O! That tell-tale envelope in the rubbish bag!) and duly prosecuted, fined, imprisoned, and executed.
