New Software Snagging List

  • I'm pretty certain there's a middle ground. We need to get used to the software features, so practising hyperlinks on a desktop and on a phone would be a good thing.

    (x-post; this is to lilbuddha)

Or, people use the preview button. Wise people already do. They will not end up quoting vast swaths of text. Hundreds of correct hyperlinks are posted on the ship daily. Surely it's not impossible.
  • And even if reading and posting to the new boards isn’t completely perfect on a mobile, it’s still a damn sight better than it was before.
  • Entering UBB code manually is also still a thing, too. Perfectly possible from a mobile.

OK, this looks simple with a simple url.
    [url="https://forums.shipoffools.com/categories"]test[/url]

But change that to a long url that ends with odd bits of coding and there will be messes.
How often were there code issues with simple quoting and italics and such on the old ship?
All I am saying is that if there is an easier option, it will make your job easier.

There is no functional solution that removes all risk. We're satisfied with the balance of function/ease that we currently have. I officially recognize your criticisms, and hereby relieve you of having to give any further fucks.

Ah. That's a bit trickier. I can't really help with that. Sorry.

I've added a note to review font choice with the Captain. The new website will use the same font, so we were keen to maintain consistency, but accessibility trumps that, in my opinion.
  • The usual fonts suggested for dyslexia support are sans serif - so from the standard fonts:
[*l Helvetica - standard on Macs
    • Verdana
    • Tahoma
There are others that are often suggested:
    • Calibri - isn't great because it doesn't distinguish 1, l and I (one, lower case L and capital i)
    • Arial - because everyone hates it
    • Comic Sans - because who wants their work to look like a primary school worksheet
    • Gill Sans and other specialist dyslexia fonts, which don't actually work on websites as they are not standard and browsers revert to default on computers without those fonts installed.

When I was coding a website, previous designer had set it up in Gill Sans, but everyone was reading it in Times New Roman as he hadn't set up the default to something more friendly. I changed the default to Verdana.

(Hmmph, no idea why the coding is stuffing up for the first list, having checked the coding from the options at the top of the page. The second list is coded the same way. Also as I started typing the list, the bullets came up automatically)

I've just noticed that on Firefox, "reader view" (the little page icon at the end of the URL bar) allows you to read the page in sans-serif format directly.

Here is a link to a forum I frequent a lot.

The fonts there are excellent, but I’m not sure what they are. I have asked

Bloody hell. The things you learn (and I've been using FF since it was still Netscape).

That addition is new with the Quantum build, I think, and doesn't work on all sites. I find it's a good way of reading Wikipedia in particular, as I have an unusually wide monitor.
  • And that'll teach me to read the documentation...

    1. clicking the quote option within Safari on the latest iOS doesn’t do anything unless one holds and uses the option Open in New Tab.
    2. The only options above the posting window on the same are bold, italics and a drop down for quote, code and spoiler.

That's the default for mobile devices. Space constraints have limited what options we could include.

Fair enough. Though I would note that means links posted will be bare. No hiding within the text. And that will be messy.

You can post links and name them using BBCode manually. It takes a while and you have to remember the format, but it is possible and I've done it.

Not sure if this comment fits here or not, but I keep clicking on "New Discussion" thinking it is where I would find "Recent Discussions". I realize I will soon catch on to this but it does seem like a word or two could make it clearer such as "Start New Discussion" or "Post New Discussion" or "Make New Discussion Post" or some such thing.

The drop down menu (‘Quote’, ‘Code’, ‘Spoiler’) on my phone is really useful. Would it be possible to include a ‘Link’ entry there? If one of the others has to go, I’d have thought ‘Code’ is one of the less-used.

Contrariwise, I wonder if the new-to-me ‘Spoiler’ feature might get a button added on the desktop/laptop version?

  • Barnabas62Barnabas62 Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host, Epiphanies Host
    BroJames

If you open the quotes in my 12.30pm post, you'll see the answers lilBuddha got. And my point that you can get around the absence of a link dropdown option. Which I demonstrated in my 12.39 post.

All the buttons do is add BBCode automatically, but you can always do it manual by entering the BBCode a character at a time.
  • BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host
Thank you for that. I do understand that you can post links manually, and did it fairly frequently on the previous software. It’s just that typing
    [url=

then pasting the url, then remembering the “]”, then typing the text, and then typing
    [/url]

involves a lot of key presses which are simply switching between keyboard displays, and I wondered if it might be better to have that available as a drop down rather than one of the others. But there may be good reasons why that choice has not been made.

I guess if I’m finding it too troublesome I can create some keyboard shortcuts for the relevant BB code on my phone.

Oh I agree! It's a bit of a fiddle. And there is no harm in asking again.

    • It would nice to be able to identify a little about posters, other than just their names, and in addition to whatever they might have put in within their profile, in the little box there. As a member from old to new ships, I recall many names, and recollect some things about them. But I'm thinking of new people, when they join, they will be sailing much more blindly that we. Perhaps there is a plugin or mod for the profile in the Vanilla forums package which would allow users to know a little more when clicking on a username.

    1. Save your draft.
    2. Go to "drafts" folder
    3. Click on draft
    4. Click on tiny near-invisible cross at top right

    Hi admins and techie people.

LRP tried to register yesterday. She has not yet received the email she requires to complete registration. She can log in and out but is unable to post on these fora.

If it helps she was registering on an old Kindle Fire.

Can you look into it please
  • Has she checked her spam folder? I realise that’s our equivalent of “turn it off and on again”, but it’s amazing how often it solves the issue.

If it is not giving too much of a fuck, may I suggest an FAQ? It does appear that there are repeated questions already.
  • The current FAQs cover registration, setting avatars, posting emojis and some of the other questions that have been raised here. The repeated asking of them does raise the question of whether that information has been read, or if it's been read and been inadequate. Obviously, we've got a list of additional common questions now that we can consider for revision of the FAQs.

We recognise that it's not ideal having the FAQs still on the old Ship software, but we can't move them over here until we've got the rest of the new Ship seaworthy.
  • I was thinking more in the terms of a temporary, locked thread on the top of Styx dealing with issues for the new Ship. But whatever, end of fucks given.
  • balaambalaam Shipmate
The problem may be that the FAQs are hidden.

They are in a link on the forum home page, but the obvious place to look would be the Styx.

Back to the other snag, not covered by FAQ.
    • LRP has registered
    • Logging out then logging in shows her as registered,
    • She has been able to set up an avatar,]
    • She gets a popup saying to click the link on her email
    • No email has arrived, she has no spam folder so it cannot be there
    • She has requested another email several times to no effect.
    • I cannot find her by using the message drop down box.

Is there a way out of this no man's land?

Please message me LRP's correct email or have her send a message to board-DOT-admin-AT-shipoffools-DOT-com, so I can verify that it isn't accidentally messed up on the account. In the mean time, I've lied to the software and toggled her email as verified - which should allow her to log in.

You might want to consider a prominent header that says something like “THESE FAQs ARE FOR THE NEW SHIP.” Others might not be as dim as I can be, but I clicked on the FAQ link, saw that it took me back to the old Ship site and thought “Oh, this part must not have been updated yet.” I just assumed they were the FAQs for the old ship and moved on.

  • Barnabas62Barnabas62 Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host, Epiphanies Host
Nick, the FAQs always contained notes on Registration and Board Identity. Given that Registration and Board Identity are managed differently here, it would have been wrong not to change the FAQs notes even if they were in old Ship format. That would have been confusing to anyone who read them.

Understood—now, at least. I’m just saying there may be some others like me. That they are on the old site led me to assume that they hadn’t been updated yet, so I didn’t read them.

Then again, I may be the only one that dense.

I don't think that is what he is saying. IMO, he is saying that someone clicking the link would think the FAQ is solely for the old ship. Since they are on the old ship, don't look different from anything on the old ship and contain topics that appear to fit the old ship; this is a reasonable conclusion.
And, unless they are being updated with questions repeatedly being asked in the Styx RE the new ship, they still fail the requests made here. And, aw dagnabit, feels like I'm giving fucks again. Apologies for that.
  • Only seemed like about a half a fuck to me. Don't feel bad.
  • Boogie

I don't know if this will help, but in my IE Tools menu>Advanced Options>there is a long list of things to check or un-check and I've always had the 'Ignore fonts' checked. I wonder if you can select a font and then make your computer use that one only?
  • Having checked in Chrome, it's under
-> Settings (three little vertical dots on top right, drop down menu).
-> Customise Fonts - looking at it the default is Times New Roman but you can choose what you want as default and serif font.

Having just changed my defaults I'm now seeing the Ship in Georgia.
