The Old Seceders Cat was collected by James Hogg (yes that James Hogg). One of the idiosyncratic pathways from my PhD when I had to actually trace who it was for my corrections having had found it wrongly cited on a website.
There is also the possibility of innuendo - singing the hymn with the correct words but with body language changing the meaning. Suggestive eyebrows are needed for this one: "The night is dark, and I am far from home. Lead thou me on!"
A couple of years ago I was trying to introduce more hymns (both new and old) which the congregation didn’t know that well, as our routine selection was getting a bit stale. The curate approved of this and helpfully sent me a list of possibilities.
My eyes boggled a little when I noticed she’d listed “Awake, awake! Fling of the night”. I don’t think she’d noticed the moral implications of the missing letter!

Strange as it may seem, there are some of us who don't know **any** James Hogg except, perhaps, the 20th governor of Texas.

This just one of various versions.
