Thanks for the comments and thoughts - they are appreciated.

@The5thMary yes that is exactly what I wish to avoid. I believe that I have done the salt route in the past and have fortunately blocked it from my memory. Slug pellets - well I just don't want them to get into the food chain.

Beer is an interesting choice but I don't wish to kill - it's more keeping them away. And then I'm a bit rubbish when there are dead bodies and the disposal of such.

Someone suggested that they hate the smell of garlic, mint, chives and marigolds ... so I might try one or other of those - not sure if that will work in a shower - garlic in the shower doesn't seem to be a marriage made in heaven @Lamb Chopped
  • My friend had a slug issue in her house. I believe the remedy was blocking up absolutely every tiny little hole where they could possibly get in. It was a big job. Her husband spent a weekend going round with sealant and such, I think.

In the spring of 1945 Allied planes strafed German schoolchildren. It's possible the planes were so high they didn't know these were children They also strafed farmers who were trying to plant their crops. Many farmers stayed indoors. This exacerbated the extreme food shortages in the following fall and winter.

My late mother-in-law, who was German, lost a friend in just such an attack. My wife is named after the little girl who died.

My mother-in-law was subsequently caught in cross-fire between infantry, and was saved by the first black man she ever saw, an American soldier who dragged her to safety in a ditch. God bless his memory and his soul - he is surely dead by now.

Two of many reasons why I hate wars (and jingoism.) The children always suffer.
  • Some people use diatomaceous earth to deter slugs. (Teeny tiny shells of teeny tiny ancient "diatom" critters.) Look it up; but I think the idea is to deter them ('cause ouchy), rather than kill them. It's sprinkled around the edges of garden plots.

    FWIW, YMMV.

I've heard of egg shells being used in the same way - though the only time I would have enough would be after baking Christmas cakes.
