  • Difficult but.. (As an Englishman)

    Brexit
We've added a pile of red tape and a few other additional costs in exchange for less rights.
We're going to have to respond to the reality that the Scots, northern Irish and Britons (yes I know Wales and Cornwall as a whole voted leave) have no reason to stay with England.
OTOH, we do at least have a deal, and to some extent at least things are hopefully planable.

    Corona
The papers are celebrating the vaccine having done 1m (and talking about aiming for 1m/week), and that's good, but also barely started.
Meanwhile there's now another time pressure.

Individually, I can't see much option for good life changing moments, and while bad ones aren't likely either.
(last thing in 2019 I just got to go to on a European business trip and I am glad to have got that in the bag, as something to claim to have changed in the last decade even if it's a bit of a stretch.)

To the third point. What gives? May the year be good to you, regardless.
  • My hope is the recovery of my brother from the stroke he suffered earlier this month. My expectation is more of the same sort of crap in 2021 as 2020, especially around Covid. My fear is that it'll be worse.
  • Increasing rate of global climate change, with further degradation of ecosystems globally and attendant political/economic chaos ...

And I for one am counting on it being an erroneous conjecture. That it might be otherwise is simply not an option. We’ve lost too many in 2020. 2011 needs to do better. May it be a year of good and blessing for you!

  • My hope is that my symptoms of long covid continue to improve such that they disappear.
My expectation is that the emergence of a vaccine for covid will spur on the development of new treatments for viruses and other disorders, including cancer.
20 years plus of bipolar disorder has taught me not to dwell on the fears, and to meet them when they come.

I'm looking forward to moving - Hoping for a Jan 2021 move.

I am looking forward to a world post-Covid, to sit with friends without feeling anxious or wondering about rules being broken and to freely hug!

    And will The Queen abdicate?

Also sending another five years to BF.
  • I’m also hoping to be looking forward to moving.
And to finding a new calling in life.
  • Yes, wishes for BF to have many more New Years!
  • I hope tat by September 2021, we will be able to hold most university classes in person. My fear is this will not happen until 2022.

Her Majesty will never abdicate. I hope for the rest though

  • My daughter being born. That’s got to be the big one 😁

COVID finally being over. Being able to properly meet with friends, enjoy sport, and worship in person. Being able to take my boy on a steam train ride without having to wear a quantity of PPE we only ever used to see in documentaries about Chernobyl.

Not having to hear the letters PPE again. Not having to worry about where my mask is, or whether I’m a few centimetres too close to someone else, or when I last washed my hands.

Brexit not being the disaster everyone here is claiming it will be, and in fact very little changing other than a few prices going up (but when don’t they?). British industry growing as it becomes (relatively) cheaper to buy locally.

Britain having a good Olympics. England having a good European Championship. England winning the Six Nations. Europe winning the Ryder Cup. Hell, 2021 could be one of the best sporting years in my lifetime if it’s allowed to be.

Worldwide, a huge COVID vaccination program that gets life closer to something like normal by summer. For me, that would mean being able to travel at least within Canada again, maybe having our US relatives come to visit next summer if things have improved enough down there. All my elderly relatives staying well, not having gotten COVID or anything else nasty. We were supposed to have a family reunion in summer 2020, and with that not happening and the oldest aunt being 90 this year, I'm hoping we'll have an opportunity to do it later. I look forward to being able to go to plays and concerts again.

Personally, lots of exciting things in the coming year. Our postponed European vacation for our 25th anniversary won't go ahead in 2021 -- I wouldn't feel safe with international travel yet, so that'll probably end up being a 27th anniversary trip in 2022 if all goes well. But we have lots to look forward to -- buying the house next door to us and fixing it up for our son and a friend to move into and turn into a recording studio; my new book coming out; my play being produced; possibly moving into a new role at work.

But if 2020 has taught me anything it's not to count on things going as expected, so who knows?

Is Outrage. We expect - nay, require - you to be around for many more years.

Covid being over. Being able to meet with family and friends freely again.

Brexit not being the disaster that's being predicted.

Getting a place on a training course I've been after for over a year.
  • If my team are relegated I wish them not to be humiliated.

I wish my cricket club a good season for both teams

I wish a better year for all those in need

As for the OP - I was joking with my Mum tonight that she better not snuff it from covid too soon, as lockdown has meant I'm now too fat for my (wedding) suit trousers. Though maybe (she said) a funeral would have to be by Zoom, and I would then not need to wear trousers at all. So - I hope I don't need to get into my trousers.

I'm cautiously optimistic about 2021, though I think it's going to be a year of incrementalism, forbearance, and managing expectations.

I think Keir Starmer and the Brexit deal are good news for the UK. Not what everyone wanted, but important stabilizing factors. Needless to say, seeing the end of Donald Trump can only be a good thing for the US, but I think Biden and Harris are going to have a difficult road ahead of them. Not sure what is going to happen here in Canada. There are rumours of an election in the Spring, but that's too far into the future to call right now. Vaccination is starting to get underway here but that's going to be a long haul.
  • Mark in Mansfield. Happy 50th. Stay healthy.

    Hang in there, Bishop's Finger.

I hope to get the vaccine within the next month if the rollout is unimpeded. I certainly want to travel again. Just yesterday my wife and I were talking about Europe or Cruise or a new car.

I look forward to seeing our government stabilizing. The last four years have been insane.

The biggest fear I have is Covid is not stopped in time.

No, it's Senior Living, but not Assisted. I'll email you.
  • @Bishops Finger As the Italians say, Cent' anni! (One hundred years!)

I don't foresee anything miraculous with Covid. The best we can hope for is that the vaccinations plans come off without a hitch, none of the vaccinations have any complications, 2021 will be a productive suspension of life as we deal with the pandemic and reflect on its deeper causes (e.g., humanity's relationship with the natural environment) and our poor responses to it in 2020, and we can return to some semblance of normality in 2022. If we accomplish all that, that would be cause for raising a glass.

The damage wrought by the GOP upon the American polity for the last 50 years will take a generation to undo, but Biden and Harris can make a good start. (Prediction: Biden will not seek a second term.) Pray God that enough of the GOP come to their senses and cooperate, or that the GOP in its current incarnation implodes and is replaced by people of good will.
  • Covid not over but numbers of new cases very low.
A spring in my step and a song in my heart, at finally moving into our new mobile home.
Meeting some new friends if slowly because of Covid, and seeing my soon to be nearby son more often.
  • I hope that before the end of the year 2021, we will return to some sort of normality, thanks to the vaccines, so that church, choirs, and children/ grandchildren are all part of my weekly reality again.
I fear that it may take longer than that, but
Maybe 2022 will see Mr Puzzler and me taking a long holiday to celebrate our Ruby Wedding anniversary.
I expect all sorts of things may get worse before they get better, as we in the UK struggle with the ongoing pandemic, Brexit, the economic consequences of both of those.

And Bishops Finger, may you be around for a good few years yet.

    Keep on punching, BF!

I'm looking forward to the Ashes series at the end of 2021. The Indians are touring this year in an engossing series. Matt and I are giving the cricket a miss this summer. Even though the crowd is limited to 30,000 it is not worth the risk. Both of us are vulnerable, Matt more than me.

At work, our younger client has fulfilled his dream and moved into a place in the suburb where he grew up, so we have space for a new client. My hope is that the new person is a good fit for the house, and that we get through the necessary period of adjustment - for us and the new client - without any big disasters.

I hope the travel bubble between Australia and NZ can be expanded to include nations in the Pacific region when it is safe. I think places like Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia etc. would benefit a great deal from Australians looking for places to holiday. I would like to invest in a company that sells caravans and tents

I hope the vaccines work well and that herd immunity is established by the end of 2021.

I fear for Africa especially in 2021, and I hope that the world can pull together to ensure that Africans all over that massive and diverse continent get access to adequate amounts of vaccine.

I hope that Coronavirus effects a change in the zeitgeist especially among the wealthy, and that we rediscover a sense of community responsibility and the common good. May that sense of responsibility and the common good begin to expand beyond our immediate concerns and our nations to include the planet. May many more people begin to see that those who suffer are part of us; that suffering cannot be fixed, but can be assuaged.

I don't want to be very picky on a thread like this, but calm seas did not make for a prosperous voyage. Good winds were needed to drive the ship forward swiftly to its destination, then cargo unloaded and off with another as as quickly as possible.

Does that make 60 the new 40? I’d be good with that.

  • @Amanda B Reckondwyth well, not really.

It's not a single text but two poems with the first, Calm Sea, speaking of the sailor's despair at lack of wind, while the second, Prosperous Journey, contrasts the calm with the benefits of wind: the lifting of mist and the chance to make progress, and therefore to trade.

Just to tweak the tail of those who think she is The Perfect Monarch™, I wonder if HM the Q will abdicate in 2021?

She's getting on in years, her Realm is rapidly disintegrating, and certain members of her Family are, shall we say, dysfunctional. Is it time to give Bonnie Prince Charlie a chance to reign over what's left of us, before he gets too old?

Sixty is most definitely the new 40.

I don't think the Queen will abdicate. Didn't she dedicate her whole life, whether it be long or short, to be devoted to the service of the country? I guess what that means is open to interpretation, but I've always interpreted it as meaning she intends to serve as monarch until her death.
  • The only thing I can see making our current monarch abicate is a vote in favour of Scottish independence. She may well find it unconscionable that she would be on the throne at the time the kingdom fractured.
  • That thought occurred itself to me, too, but she could (I suppose) be like the Emperor of Austria/King of Hungary, and reign happily and gloriously over both nations at the same time.

Yes, I wonder why that is?

FWIW (not much), I find it hard to concentrate whilst watching virtual services, so maybe others feel the same. Perhaps (tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets) the novelty has worn off...

The lack of music and/or singing at many virtual (or indeed RL) services doesn't help, but YMMV.
  • I am looking forward to going to choral evensong in a cathedral (or large church like Tewkesbury Abbey) again.

I hope - for the sake of others - that Brexit does not turn out to be the absolute disaster I expect. But I fear years of slow, relative decline and fewer opportunities for those still in the workforce.

For myself, I intend to spend more time bashing the keyboard to finish the novels I am working on, and less time on social media. Much less on Twitter, a bit less on FB, and maybe just the odd comment on here.
