The best thing to do would be to put the sprouts in the bin (or feed them to your new Unicorn), fry the bacon, and enjoy...

Into the compost bin I hope. They may do some good there.

Yes, as long as you can somehow put up with the smell whilst they putrefy...

A cow pat or 2 over them will cover the smell of the sprouts.

Always assuming one has access to an obliging cow - in which case, maybe the cow would eat the sprouts?

We're talking about innocuous cruciform vegetables that are basically very small cabbages. I'm not sure what some of you are talking about.

Innocuous is not an adjective that sits well with sprouts. Nor with cabbages either.

They're hardly exciting but they do the job of sitting next to the meat and the potatoes... what do you want out of a vegetable?

A question which I have honestly never given any thought. I like sprouts. So there. So sue me.

They used to contain various chemical compounds known as glucosinolates, which create bitterness in vegetables, but in more recent times scientists have lowered the levels of these compounds in sprouts, and they are sweeter.
AIUI the glucosinolates are superfood compounds that have lots of health benefits, and sprouts save you from having to pay California nutritionists to put broccoli and kale in places you'd rather they didn't put them.

    @Dafyd

I believe that cod liver oil is cheap, and good for us too. :grimace: , I love the BS we have today
  • I take a Large Cod Liver Oil Capsule with my brekfuss every day. Whether it is good for me or not, I couldn't really say, but my knees don't creak, so maybe it is.

Spro*ts would not have the same effect.
  • Oh I'm sure sprouts must be good for us. Perhaps even gooder for some people if put into a capsule before popping into the mouth?

    That it doesn’t trigger a retch-reflex.

Bitter and sulphurous suits me just fine.
  • Well, it describes you just fine...well, on some days...
    :naughty:

    Me too, BTW.

@Martin54 You must be talking about another vegetable. :persevere:

I went to the shops yesterday and there were no Brussels sprouts! I've been eating them daily with huge relish - sweet, crunchy - absolutely delicious. Surely the season for them couldn't be coming to an end already? Rushed home and onto the computer. Phew.... They should be in the shops until March..... Big relief.

Be enjoyable to eat. Sprouts aren't.

We had sprouts with salmon dahl the other day - delicious! 😋

Again, all the sprouts haters can just have their brassica in another form. Kohlrabi is sweet and has a taste and texture similar to apple.

Yeah, but do you put mustard on them? English or Dijon? I obviously have a hot, sour, bitterness deficiency.
  • We have had a very nice bubble and squeak hash type thing with sprouts and sausages before now. The recipe includes grain mustard, but I am a bit more generous heaping the teaspoon than the official quantity.

There was a point a few years ago when I completely lost my sense of smell due to a cold. During that week or so sprouts were about the only thing I could taste, due to the bitter undertones.

I actually have a large bowl of vegetables every night and yes, I do put in a wee smidge of American mustard, tomato sauce and mayonnaise. Eccentric but delicious

  • Sprouts tonight.
  • @Baptist Trainfan

    Oh I wish.... Enjoy.
