  • But as a malignant narcissist he is also very crafty. His modus operandi is to cause chaos and hope that people are so busy fighting fires that they don't see him walking off with stolen goods.

I wouldn't say that he has a Masterplan - but he's crafty enough to know that if he can cause enough uproar, he might just get something out of it - even he probably doesn't know quite what.

What a lovely description of a toddler!

Reason says that Pence can't do anything to alter the election, other than to allow more peddling of lies.

The fact that Pence asked for the lawsuit asking him to do so to be thrown out suggests he won’t do it as well.

So far, videos of the "Save America" rally does not appear to show an armed mob. That is good.

For those who want to watch events unfold live, here is the livestream for the joint session of Congress that will be convened to count the electoral votes. Broadcasting is scheduled to start at 12:35 pm Eastern Time.

And the Joint Session has been convened. They're going through the states alphabetically. It'll be interesting when they hit Arizona.

"Interesting" here meaning "incitement to drinking heavily".

Fifteen minutes in and they're already breaking up into separate chambers to debate Arizona's electoral votes.

Effin' Ted Cruz and the rest of the neo-Confederate Dozen.

Did Lauren Boebert (R-CO) just refer to her "separate but equal" right to object?

Apparently the Capitol is now on lockdown after Trump supporters have broken into the building.
  • Well

    It ‘s just gone crazy

    From Croesus’ link:
Capitol police also told those in the Cannon House building to "take visitors, escape hoods, and Go Kits" and report to a tunnel connected to a nearby building.
Now all of a sudden I feel like I should really have an escape hood.

The House is now back in session.

{edit} Recess again. C-SPAN now broadcasting demonstrators in statuary hall.
  • Is this actually a genuine attempt at a coup?
  • Is this actually a genuine attempt at a coup?
Oh yes. But a slightly pathetic one.

On the constitutional level, nothing will come of this.

Sadly, on the individual level, many may be hurt.

And it's Trump's fault. He incited this. Repeatedly.

The shouty men with the flags who invaded the Capitol? Kind of, but not really. It's more of a riot.

What Congressional Republicans are doing? Yes.

Probably not, but I think they prefer the term "putsch".

I don't know what else you'd call it.
So far (touch wood) it looks likely to go down as a textbook example of how not to organise a coup. Eddard Stark organised a better coup.

Would now be a good time to invoke the Act to remove trump?
AIUI, some cabinet members plus VP support are needed but as Pence has been dissed by trump there may be enough to get the bastard out and restore some order.

Yes trump's gullible dimwitted thuggish supporters would hate it but it would be Republicans doing it and the party would look good in the eyes of decent Republicans in future (eg 2024) while the rioters rot in jail surrounded by people they despise.
  • I don't think they're seperable either. Legal shenanigans, bizarre behaviour in Congress, and now gunmen, all fungus on the same dungheap.

To me it looks as if the gullable dimwit thugs' support is indispensable to any potential Republican candidate.

They need to reinvent themselves as decent right-wingers and dump trump's thugs.
They can't continue to rely on dimwits, lies, thugs and stealing elections.
  • MSNBC reports there are now protestors on the Senate floor. Traitors. Insurrectionists. Unpatriotic bastards.
  • That bloke sitting in the chair is going down for quite a while...
  • They have to rely on the knuckledraggers turning out for them at the next elections or they lose their seats. Leastways, that's the only way I can explain their extraordinary conduct.

Yes - why protesters? Rioters, really. Why aren't they called just that in the media now?

BREAKING: A source tells me The Defense Department has just denied a request by DC officials to deploy the National Guard to the US Capitol.

They have to rely on the knuckledraggers turning out for them at the next elections or they lose their seats. Leastways, that's the only way I can explain their extraordinary conduct.

Even with the help of the knuckledraggers, voter suppression and other election offences they lost, badly and they can't believe how much further they'd have to go to win.

They think the Democrats must have cheated even worse to have beaten them - that's the only thing that make sense of them claiming it was stolen while being unable to show any evidence.

So the Republican party needs to return to acting as a decent, fair, honest party if they can't win with threats, violence and cheating.

It may be a long game but they should start ASAP by dumping Donald 'BadLoser' Trump and his thugs now.
  • PendragonPendragon Shipmate
I assume that if they can't use the National Guard they will need to find regular soldiers or police to bus in as reinforcements.
  • Can the Senate reconvene in another building?

  • I agree Croesos. I thought the fact that all previous defence secretaries still living saw fit to make a pre-emptive statement like that suggests that matters could get far more serious than they already are. Trump has already damaged the furniture on his way out
  • I heard that Trump told Defense to deny use of the Guard. This is definitely looking more coup-like as the afternoon progresses.

They just went back on that, and apparently the NG will be deployed.
  • Watching a special live edition of the PBS News Hour. Saw something very weird: a rope and a grappling hook (?!) fastened onto a stone railing, and a man climbing up to a friend (?) who was standing by the railing. Lots of people were already in that upper area, so I'm not sure why the climbing. But someone was *that* prepared. Maybe he just wanted to be able to say "hey, *I* stormed the Capitol by grappling hook".
