Let's see... after a police shooting, the cop always says, "I feared for my life." Obviously these cops were not frightened, since they didn't shoot anybody. They were comfortable among their own.
One of the cops did indeed shoot a terrorist, who later died ...
But there is a problem when you're outnumbered 20:1 and you have only a couple of magazines for your pistol ...
(MANY of) the rioter/terrorist/insurrectionists obviously were very serious about what they were doing, so the cops were ... circumspect ... to a degree that we now criticize hours/days later (just as critics feel free -- hours/days later -- to excoriate cops who DO shoot in self-defense or in defense of innocent others) ...
One of my non-clergy duties is that I am in charge of a small Security detail for a mid-size non-profit organization ... Most of our work is boring routine safety stuff ... But the last couple years we have had no choice but to train for the remote but real possibility of an active shooter situation at one of our public meetings ... Trust me ... This stuff isn't a picnic ...

Yes, indeed. Given the number of cops that were on duty, it doesn't seem like they had the manpower to resist a determined mob (helping them down the stairs and taking selfies with them seems a little unnecessary, mind). What is being criticized is not so much the decision of the cops on duty to adopt a less confrontational posture given the cirrcumstances, as it is the decision to choose not to police this mob with the same staffing levels that were deployed for the BLM protests, for example.

Yes ...
Already the chiefs are resigning or being fired ...
The US Capitol Police shouldn't have been outnumbered or outgunned - they have more than 2000 officers and a budget of over half a billion dollars.
I agree ... They screwed up ...
But it goes back for a few years ...
Cliven Bundy -- whose "militia" buddies faced down US Marshals in 2014 (without later penalty) has praised Wednesday's insurrection ... I thought back in 2014 that the Sagebrush Rebels should have been taken into custody then and there ... but ... Same with the Malheur Wildlife Refuge armed insurrection in 2016 ...
If you give them an inch, they eventually take a mile ..

For once we agree. The police are soft on the far right.

Yes ... This will not be quickly changed, unfortunately ... For the sake of The Republic, I hope we're not too late ... Rome comes to mind ...

I'm sure this is nothing to do with the presence of the farright in police forces across the country for decades.

There is also the (well-intended, but) All Volunteer Professional Military, many of whom later become police officers ...

She wasn't a terrorist. She was a rioter, an insurrectionist who thought she was a patriot. Misguided by the misguided, deluded fascist president and the fascist dominated Republican party.
The police were ill-led by Sund who lied to Lofgren of the Committee on House Administration which which oversees the Capitol Police, and its Board whose expelled Sergeant at arms is also implicated.
You and yours @Fr Teilhard are victims of the insane implementation of the Second Amendment. As were Wilson and Brown in the latter's shooting. Wilson lived, but only just it seems, in a desperate, kill or be killed, life and death struggle born of guns and slavery, both nowhere near addressed in the institutionalized injustice of the USA shown in the murder of George Floyd. By the police. Despite bad cops, we all love good cops. Well I do as will many here. The trouble is mate, the only colour isn't blue.
