Alleged Visions of Pope St. Pius X

Disclaimer: we have no evidence that Pope Pius X actually had these two visions. They are not reported in his biographies, but were posted on the internet some years ago. Because of their graphic nature, i repost them here in Hell:

In 1909, during the general chapter of the Franciscan Order, Pope Pius X suddenly fell into a trance. The audience waited in reverent silence. When he awoke, the Pope cried out:

"What I see is terrifying! Will it be myself? Will it be my successor? What is certain is that the Pope will quit Rome, and in leaving the Vatican he will have to walk over the dead bodies of his priests. Do not tell anyone this while I am alive."

Just prior to his death in 1914, Pius X had another vision:

"I have seen one of my successors, of the same name, who was fleeing over the bodies of his brethren. He will take refuge in some hiding place, but after a brief respite, he will die a cruel death. Respect for God has disappeared from human hearts. They wish to efface even God's memory. This perversity in nothing less than the last days of the world."

Interpretation: The two predictions apply to two different popes. The first is Pope Francis (notice the mention of the Franciscan Order) who will "walk." The Second vision is for Joseph Ratzinger who shares his first name with Giuseppe Sarto and will is not described a "walking" due to his infirmities.

This event appears to be related to the Prophecy of the Popes prediction for Francis:
In psecutione. extrema S.R.E. sedebit.
"He will reign in the final persecution. of the Holy Roman Church."

ISIS and Iran have been enemies, but the USA has virtually declared war on Iran by its murder of Qassem Soleimani. As we know, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Will Iran supply the weaponry and logistics to support an ISIS attack against the European Catholic Church?
Let us pray that these prophecies and my interpretations are not correct.

  • I have heard ( can’t recall when or where) that Pius X was convinced that he had the second sight.

If this episode has not been mentioned by his biographers it might be worth taking with a grain of salt.

Sounds suspiciously like the writings of the late Sisters Faustina Kowalkska and Josefa Menendez. Both these women now enjoy a cult following in certain RC circles.

Why is this in Hell? Dead priests is nowhere near graphic enough!

    undead rat:

What is the reference to the Franciscans in the first vision?

EDIT: Oh, sorry. I gather you meant that the vision took place while Pius was meeting with Franciscans.

Still, though, Francis, despite his papal name, is a Jesuit, not a Franciscan.

I think it's not a reference to being in the vision itself, but at a meeting of the Franciscan Order. Could have been better expressed.

We need a new forum: "Complete and Utter Bollocks"
  • Don’t even bother
  • O I dunno.

Might be fun - and I can think of one or two suitable Shipmates who could be promoted to act as its Host(s)...

Ghost stories. I mean, we could move our arses regarding some horror which is actually happening now; speculating about future horror is less effort, and as Sisyphean tasks of unending apparent futility go (is that verbose redundancy? I guess it is) less damaging to the ego. That’s what I find attractive about ghost stories, anyway.
  • *Redundant verbosity* would have been a better phrase, but otherwise, I agree. I like ghost/eldritch horror stories, too.

The horrors which are actually happening now (their name is Legion), are hard to handle, even if one is not directly involved or affected.

Spending hours poring over the musings of ancient savants is a way of blotting out those horrors, I'm sure.

What's wrong with verbose redundancy? Why would redundant verbosity have been better? And why the superfluous, i.e. redundant asterisks? Italics at most I'd have thought.

  • Allen and Skye * report a old proverb:
"When both the white pope and the black pope shall die on the same night, then shall dawn on the European nations the great white day."
This could be related to Pius X's alleged visions. Great White Day might be a reference to the rise of extreme right-wing parties in Europe.

A confirmation point on the visions is that they seem to predict the retirement of a pope who shares a name with Pius X. Benedict XVI fits that description. The visions were extant on the internet at least in 2008, well before Ratzinger announced that he would step down.

We will soon see if the visions are valid. Joseph R. is reportedly becoming very feeble. If he should die peacefully, then the visions have failed. Let's hope that they do.

Proverb: a short pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.

Hard to imagine a society in which that saying was ever in general use.

    Didn't that already happen?
  • Wouldn't the "black pope" more likely refer to one of the Orthodox Popes, the Coptic perhaps, who do in fact wear black where the Roman Pope wears white?
  • Or the pope in Avignon?
  • I just hope that Dan Brown isn't reading this thread. That's the last thing we need.

The General of the Society of Jesus is not uncommonly referred to as the Black Pope.

Someone said 'Constantine' somewhere else on the ship recently. It made me go all hot and cold. I haven't seen Steve whatisname for a while...
  • Did Pius X play chess? Black bishop, white bishop. Or black king, white king.

BTW: Has anyone else read Katherine Neville's novel "The Eight"? Sort of adjunct to the kind of things we're talking about.
  • Bet he didn’t. Too busy pontificating.....

@undead_rat. Mate. Stop it. You're in the mouth of madness. Come down. We can help. Believe it or not. Many of us have been there. Still are, but know it. What's your story mate? Because all of this is about you. None of it is about how reality works external to you. Apart from how it works in others like you - us. We're all on the spectrum of irrational humanity here. Your kind of madness cannot make any headway with ours. But that's what you want. To fail, because on the way, you get abused, which is better than neglect. At least people are engaging with you no matter how hostilely. We can engage more functionally. If you want. Therapeutically. Mutually. We need you to help us help you. Can you do that?
  • Dunno about all of that Martin54 but you have made 1 valid point; not worth pursuing. A whole lot of nonsense methinks.

One has to try @Sojourner. Does one not? Do we not?
  • No Martin we don’t. This is harmless idiocy. You can better expend your energy on a better cause.

Trust me I’m a recovering papist.
  • Martin54Martin54 Shipmate
OK mate, you don't. I do. I'm a recovering Catholicophobe.
  • I have a bit of sympathy for @undead_rat, who has provided us with some *interesting* topics to think about and to discuss - even if we don't have access to the arcana which s/he mentions so frequently.

I doubt if many of us have even heard of the various seers, savants, and sages we are told to heed...and s/he must be a bit disappointed at the reactions of several (but not all!) of us miserable heretics to subjects which are clearly dear to his/her heart.

    No it isn't.
    Thanks for listening.

    I'm wishing I wasn't.

  • Why should we care about any of it? I feel fairly confident it falls in the category of things Jesus advised us not to worry about. Nothing but distractions from what we’re supposed to be focused on, in my opinion.

  • Why O why does The Fate Of The World™ always seem to revolve around the Roman Catholic Church and its predictions?

There are, AIUI, a few other major religions/ branches of the Christian faith out there somewhere.
  • I have looked through a number of Italian websites,(including, believe it or not, a film about Pius X with actors and actresses probably made in the late 20s).Nothing and no-one seems to mention anything about alleged visions.
On the other hand the alleged visions are somewhat similar to the story of the Third Secret of Fatima which terrified me in the 1950s -in much the same way that a TV version at the same time of' 1984' did.

There are the well known visions of Pius XII but they were in a quite different league.
The pope had fallen seriously ill sometime in the 1940s and seemed to waken up and see Jesus standing at the foot of his bed and expected that He was telling him it was time to go with Him. However the Good Lord said to the pope that he would get better and continue his work for the Church.

Not as far as I know a specifically Catholic thing but again I remember from the 1950s people saying that ;when the Jews return to their homeland,it's a sign that the end of the world is near.
  •

The visions of Pius XII are the sort of thing often experienced by people during serious illness, and can, of course, be very real to those who see them.

As for Global Nuclear War, any fool with half an eye on the news can see that that could happen - even now, Nutjob Trump is probably itching to go out with a bang by nuking Iran...

Twenty minutes into catching up with this thread and the zany combination of Catholic paranoia, triumphalism and Martin's messianic empathies have left me with Tom Lehrer's Vatican Rag as an earworm.

    When in Rome do like a Roman;
    Ave Maria,
Gee, it's good to see ya.
Gettin' ecstatic an' sorta dramatic an'
    Doin' the Vatican Rag!

  • Yeah, me too
  • I know that song. From the good old Dr. Demento show.

  • FirenzeFirenze Shipmate, Host Emeritus
Why I linked to it (any excuse to introduce Tom Lehrer always welcome).
  • At MaryLouise's "Vatican Rag" link, there's also a link (over on the right) to TL's "The Elements" song--about the periodic table of the elements. Really funny. I've occasionally seen other people cover it on TV. One was Daniel Radcliffe, who starred in the Harry Potter movies. And on "The Big Bang Theory", Sheldon sang it once when drunk.
  • Martin--

Serious or joking about Strauss as the Beast?

    Thx.
