The South Coast Air Quality Management District has temporarily suspended limits on cremations in southern California because of the backlog of bodies. Someone in LA County dies of covid every 7 or 8 minutes.
Poor Latino neighborhoods are getting slammed hardest of all. The so-called lockdown is doing nothing for them, because they have to go to work, they get sick at work, and then the virus tears through their households.

And, of course, making alterations to your workplace to actually reduce the risk of Covid transmission costs money, and reduces efficiency, so what you get is a sign telling you to wear a mask, and a shrug.
At last night's virtual Zoom rehearsal of our choral group, three members announced that they have tested positive and were showing symptoms. We were hoping to begin rehearsing in an open-air parking garage, half the chorus at a time, masked and socially distanced, beginning in February. I'm sure we will rethink that now.
"If I was in [Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's] shoes ... I'd be on that phone call every single day. I'd be up that guy's yin-yang so far with a firecracker he wouldn't know what hit him," the Ontario premier said of Pfizer's executives.
"I would just say that … if the prime minister is able to do that, there would be a lineup of premiers behind that would bring a lighter to that party," Moe [Sask premier] said.
Yingyang means anus. Disgusting. Of course the company will respond favorably to these 2 men.
From Noprophet's link: At this time, the shortage should not have an impact on those requiring a second dose said Dr. Saqib Shahab, the province's chief medical health officer, as it's believed second doses can be administered up to 42 days after the first and still be effective.
My mother had her first vaccination (Pfizer) on 16 January and her appointment for her second dose is on 27 March. That's ten weeks - 70 days. She has been assured that a ten week gap will not reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine. My nephew (front line worker) will have a bigger gap - 14 Jan for the first and early April for the second.
My son just got word that the university is "consolidating" dorm rooms, and he needs to choose between paying an extra 1K+ or else accept a new roommate. ...
FWIW that has been standard practice for decades at Caprica U student housing. I got offered the same deal in first year back in 19coughcough; I took a chance and didn't pay, pushed the two twin beds together, and luckily I didn't get another roommate. I agree that it's a moronic policy during a pandemic.
Yep, it turns out that my kid has a single room by default right now, as the number of students in that dorm is an odd one--and he was at the very end. It's good to be the end of the alphabet! (and hall)

Lighting a fire under someone's arse / shoving a lit firecracker up someone's arse is a relatively common metaphor for encouraging action in someone who seems to be taking his sweet time about doing anything, and is just sitting on the body part in question. I've always thought it was a reference to the cartoons (Roadrunner etc.) where this kind of thing happens all the time, but I don't have proof of that.

I'd say the good old boys think it is funny, with the rest of us thinking it is inappropriate. The reference to hazing on hockey teams has come up. Things thrust into anuses has occurred. It's rapey.
O God. I have *happy* memories (from many years pre-Covid) of being stuck in an ambulance queue, and really finding it hard to carry on reassuring the poor patient.

Beloved ancient mother-in-law is back in the hospital in New York, so my wife asked if they could give her the virus vaccination there, as she is in a priority group. No. There are no vaccination doses available in Orange county for anyone. Meanwhile we are locked in, locked down and locked out of the US and can't cross the border unless we can prove that someone is dying. OK - I exaggerate a little; we can get out for walks, but I think I am experiencing caveman regression.
They’ve had to admit my dad now - I am on interminable hold to the hospital to speak to A&E to see if he has made it out of the ambulance and onto a ward.
Some good news have had mobile phone contact with both, both now on wards, had some treatment and feeling a bit better. Possibly prayers helped !
The NHS test n trace app flagged their original exposure, they got pcr tests as were already symptomatic and that has meant they have been checking their own obs three times a day which allowed us to get them timely medical help. 111 were v good even though I was ringing them from the other end of the country.
But also fuck Covid, wear a mask, and don’t go to the supermarket it’s not worth it. (Get anything humanly possible delivered.)
ION, I see that the South African variant of Ye Plague has reared its ugly head here in Kent (as well as in Surrey, and west London). An emergency programme is being carried out, with police, fire brigade, council staff, and others knocking on doors and offering to test anyone over 16 there and then.
The area concerned is only a couple of postcodes south of where I live...
I just moved and stirred up a lot of dust that no doubt had been there behind heavy things for years. I was indeed shocked when we moved a few items out from the walls. Which is to say it may all be just dust, but now I have a runny nose, sore throat, muscle pain, and just generally feeling tired. So I have locked myself away from Mr. Image and am feeling a bit anxious. I was interacting with the public a lot before the move, bank, store, post office, and moving people. Fingers crossed.
@ Lamb Chopped, indeed I do but only heaven and the moving company can guess where they are. 5 days in and still unpacking. Had other things to deal with, heat would not come on, could not hook up internet, their fault not mine, and other stuff, However, we love our new home despite its quirks at the moment.

This may change.

Keep safe @Bishops Finger .
It's mostly the Maidstone area (ME15), but worrying, nevertheless.
There may indeed be only a few people affected at the moment, but the aggressive response (and I mean that in the best sense of the words) is welcome.
FWIW, my own postcode area is in one of the towns in which the Kentish variant first appeared...
