There's a 50s book being widely quoted by Trump-watchers called 'When Prophecy Fails' which looks at what happens to millenarian movements. It's quite findable on the internet.

It describes the moment when the prophecy doesn't happen as "disconfirmation", and comes to the surprising conclusion that while such "disconfirmations" do lead to some being undeceived, they can and often do actually result in the group becoming more convinced and more proselytising.

(There's a side argument about whether Christ's death was the biggest disconfirmation of all time and whether the Church offers proof of the above hypothesis).

So the non-fulfilment of prophecy is as good as it’s fulfilment?

Ah okay. There are no false prophets, only alternative prophets. There’s very good prophecy on both sides. Whatever and whoever is declared good, is good.

    Inevitable, I suppose. Every alt-right has a corresponding alt-righteous.

Indeed, once one departs from the facts - a trend that is being driven full speed right now, not least by rich people who've discovered it's a great way of making money off the rubes - anything becomes possible, and even the craziest ideas can get out of control and break into reality.

As I understand it Q-Anon started off by being a troll account that took on a life of its own according to a special application of Poe's Law.
