“If music be...” UK Cathedral Vaccination programme

MiffyMiffy Shipmate
So, today, Lichfield and Salisbury Cathedrals have opened their doors as temporary vaccination hubs for the over 80s. And according to my sources, the Director of Music at the latter has planned a programme of soothing music to accompany the procedure, played on the cathedral’s famous Father Willis organ.

https://www.itv.com/news/2021-01-15/organ-music-to-play-as-over-80s-receive-covid-19-jabs-at-salisbury-cathedral

I wonder what will feature on their playlist? What would you choose?

Drop, drop, slow tears (Orlando Gibbons)?
Love bade me welcome (George Herbert - set to music by RVW)?

Yes, I know these are meant to be sung, but the music is uplifting (and the Gibbons piece lends itself to improvisation).

Also - Eclogue for Piano and Strings (Opus 10) by Gerald Finzi. I don't know if this would work on a cathedral organ, though it's been adapted for two pianos...
  • It’s probably terrible that the first thing that came to my mind was “The Flight of the Bumblebee.” (Yes, I have heard it played on organ.)

  • Missed the edit window:

Waltz No 2 from Jazz Suite 2 by Shostakovich.

My first two thoughts were ‘Ave Maria,’ and ‘I’ve got You Under My Skin.’

    * I mean- ‘gratia plena,’ is probably an appropriate prayer under the circumstances.
  •

I've Got You Under My Skin is an inspired choice...another *interesting* improvisation?

Definitely not the Bach Toccata and Fugue...
  • Well, any kind of injection in Scotland is known as a jag.

    So anything by/involving Mick Jagger.

Botheration! English Cathedrals on Twitter got there before us. Never mind- our programme is far more refined than theirs.😇

    vacination fits better

I know. I realised after I’d posted but missed the edit window.

Yes, Blackburn cathedral too - my friend, a retired nurse, is doing inoculations there. 🙂

    Ouch! 😃

Yes, I guess there’ll be a fair few other cathedrals taking part. 🙂

  • Drugs and sex and rock and roll? (Ian Dury would've approved).
  • Rochester's vaccination centre is in the crypt - no organ there, alas.

Will there be a Helter-Skelter and Crazy Golf while-u-wait?

Ah- but I bet you it’ll be a sight more peaceful than in Salisbury...

    Ahem...You’re forgetting we’re talking over-eighties here.

I like the idea of people sitting socially distanced and being vacinated where they sit.

Of course! I’d forgotten about that one.

    Glory be to Jesus
(actually that would be better for a blood donor clinic)
  • For places without a team of organists willing to do it or vaccinating where no instrument is available they should play the cathedral choir's recordings over the PA system.

Onward Christian soldiers seems appropriate in the struggle against the virus.
  • I'd agree, but OCS is considered very un-PC in today's CofE.

Aside: the UK gets the vaccine in cathedrals, while here in southern California we'll be going to Dodger Stadium and Disneyland. Figures!

I chose that as one of the hymns for my wedding, though it was a veerry long time ago and, what is even funnier looking back, we married in a Unitarian chapel 😅!
  • How about “(I Am Not Throwing Away) My Shot” from “Hamilton”?

Even better: Fight the Good Fight- that wedding favourite; equally non PC!

Slight tangent-a certain author has started a similar thread on Twitter, (are we allowed to say T****er here?). Give it a look; folk have come up with some real gems.

I rather enjoyed their offering of the Cantique de Jean Vaccine....

You, Kingsfold, go and stand with your face in the corner for 10 minutes for that.

I take absolutely no credit for it - it was suggested on the twitter thread to which Miffy referred. But it was just too good not to share further.... (turns to face the wall)
  • Roll up your sleeve and hold your arm out when you do that.
  • Someone on the Grauniad website suggested The Blue Danube Waltz...

    *sings*

Da da da da da, JAB JAB, JAB JAB....

Steer clear of ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’(Neil Young)
  • The vaccination is subcutaneous so the obvious has to be I've got you under my skin 😀
  • MiffyMiffy Shipmate
What about The First Cut is the Deepest? Good if you wanted to start a debate about the efficacy and spacing of doses.
  • Needles and pins?

Just discovered THIS! I'll be so spaced out. In a cathedral I'd stay ALLLLLLL day long. Three four hour shifts. No, four.

Thanks Boogie. I really enjoy the Marsh Family. Did they have a public profile before they started sharing their lockdown music?

They seem to have a lot of stuff on Youtube. Have you heard their latest - based on Total Eclipse of the Heart.
