Eligibility for the vaccine

  • Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our county's two hospitals and the largest private employer, we are now ready to move into our 1B tier 2 phase which will allow vaccines for everyone over 59 plus educators and transit workers. I think we are the first county in Washington State to reach this level.

Today was the start of the vaccination programme here. First up are the vaccinators themselves, then staff at managed isolation and quarantine facilities and their families.

An Auckland doctor is calling for Maori and Pasifika people to be given a high priority. In past epidemics they have been shown to be more susceptible, with infection and death rates have been higher. Also they are more likely to be living in crowded conditions and have had previous illnesses such as asthma, pneumonia or rheumatic fever which would mean the effects of COVID would be worse for them.

I wouldn't be surprised if people living in Auckland (New Zealand's largest city) were given priority either because that is where the outbreaks from managed isolation and community transfer have occurred.

I could see the medical logic for either of these groups being given priority, but there would probably be an outcry that could be heard all over the world if it happened, (I don't belong to any of these groups).

My nephew, bless his insular little heart, is going to wait until a lot of other people have had the vaccination to see what the effects are. I didn't point out that actually, millions of people have been vaccinated.
