avatars?

What's the best way to snag an avatar? In the rusty old vessel we used to sail, I just used one of those helpfully provided by the crew. But it's a new day, a new opportunity to try something a bit more... defining. So how to you find/get/upload one? Does it work to upload a photo you've taken-- or is the space too small for that to be recognizable? Can one find them on google images, and how to know if their free/fair use? Or do you have to search for them like Pokemon? How/where did you find your avatar?

  • I tried a photo when we were testing, and it works pretty well. Try to crop it square.
  • Same here. Uploading a photo from my tablet was a snap.

Google is rubbish for determining fair use.
    This site

searches Creative Commons so should be good.
Alternately, assuming the old avatar options are free use, is you could do a search describing the one you want to use. That is what I did for mine. I assume the software will do some of the resizing, but also that there will be a max size.

I think 2Mb is the maximum upload size

You can use tineye.com to try and track down a larger copy of an existing avatar. Just upload the small version, or point it to the url of the small image.

My avatar is a photo I took of my namesake on my desk. I suppose it depends on the amount of detail in the photo, but I think Hedgie and his red flower look okay. YMMV

  • my avatar on the Old Ship was one I picked from Ship stock, and am sad to lose it. Found a small hand-crafted archbishop in my files. He seems to fit the space OK, so will do for the moment
  • Mine is a photo from photolibrary of new glasses a couple of weeks ago. when I registered her several months ago, I used anothe phot taken years ago of feet encased in handknit socks.

Easy to upload and they both worked.

  • Mine is the same toy donkey, just a different picture.

Mine is of a photo I took. From my limited experimentation, the crucial thing seems to be not going over the memory size. Some photos are surprisingly large in that respect. 2Mb isn't a huge amount of memory. There's usually a way to check the data size of a picture before you try to upload it.
  • Thanks for the tips! What do you think?
  • Very nice.
  • A shipmate made my old one years ago. I have no idea how to get it back (many computer changes since then), so I just found a new image on the internet.

If you don't mind it being just the 48x48 pixel version, I can slap that in for you.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I’ll stick with the new one.

On the old Ship I just used one from the ship's library. I found this one on the internet.
  • I'm a technophob (can't spell either, being dyslexic). I don't have a modern phone/tablet (can't afford them) to download photos. I want my wee avatar back again please. Help SoF.
  • Find one of your posts on the old Ship (if necessary, add a post in the Styx). If you've a windows computer, right click on the avatar and select "Save image as ..." (exact wording may vary depending on browser). Give it a sensible name and a sensible place so you can find it easily.

Go to your profile here (just click on your name) and to the top right will be your avatar (the black and yellow thing). Click where it says "change picture" and select the file you've just saved on your computer. That should do the trick.
  • Alan. You are a star. Will wade through the Welsh snow to do it now.
  • Wheee! I'm me again.

Alan - You can do this on a mac too. Go to your old profile and right click on your picture and it gives you loads of ways to save.

Yes, that's more or less how I kept mine, which I'm fairly sure was originally a Ship standard version.

I am back to my old avatar now I know how to do it.
  • So am I!

Am I right in thinking that, on the new boards, the avatars are a tad smaller than they were? Or is this an illusion caused by the larger font?

Well I googled free images... so hopefully that's correct!
  • I found a picture of a Roman matron.
  • O, I wondered who it was! Most imposing (just like your posts).

    I'll get me toga.....

The athletic dark haired dancer, which may have symbolised me in one way when I embarked the ship was no longer apt, so I welcome the opportunity to change. My avatar now is the peace pagoda in MK. Just about visible is my Dad, contemplating . He was in the clutches of dementia then so it's a precious image to me.

Clicking the smaller pic brings up a larger version on that versions account details. I'm greatly enjoying seeing people's avatars, old and new, in more detail.

This 'Beware of the T-Rex' sign from an outdoor showing of Jurassic Park will have to do until I've found something more arachnoid.

One of the things I like about the new Ship is that, when I click on anybody's Avatar, it takes me to a page where the picture is much larger. Your father is quite visible there, as are other details of the Pagoda. I was looking at it a little earlier.
  • Ah, I see now. What larks we are 'aving, Pip, what larks!

  • This avatar is rescued from the old board, so fuzzy in my profile. I do have the original drawing (watercolour pencils) to retake a picture at bigger
  • Had to be done…
  • I saved my old one. When it is enlarged it is a bit fuzzy, but then I am a bit fuzzy so it matches.

I have asked the artist (my Senior Child) to redo my now overly-pixilated avatar in a larger format. She promises she will comply as soon as her carpal tunnel is better. Until then, I'll just have to be fuzzy on my profile picture.
  • Mine is me about to deal a terminal blow to a poor cricket ball (it finished up in a Dutch canal). I rather like the way you'd never pick me out in a crowd from it, and that I look a bit like Johnny Alpha.

  • Ok we are up to date with boots. These are my current pair though I do not usually wear purple laces with them. Only one so more recognisable in the small avatar.

Yes, I like the way the ‘generic’ ones are all different.

I am happy to create or edit avatars for folk if you want something customised.
  • I'm using an Apple iPad mini. How do I either transfer my old avatar or choose a photo for my new one?

Having just checked using my iDevice and - ahem - tested it on your profile¹...

    To change your profile picture:
    1) Click on your own name or picture to go to your profile.
    2) Click on the "change picture" portion of your profile picture.
    3) Select an image from on your gallery.

To snag your old avatar image from Ye Olde Shippe:
    1) Go to your profile there, or one of your old posts.
    2) Touch and hold the image - it should then give you the option of saving it to your gallery.

    Cheers.

¹ Incidentally, I've always thought that Allosaurus skull looked like a Priscilla.

Hmmm, I have kind of gone for a new spin on the old - I suppose I could search the old boards, but I quite like this one! Also, (and I can't remember if I did this post marriage anyway), I've changed from AnnieP to AnnieD.
Well I googled free images... so hopefully that's correct!
    Doris - looking good!
  • You were still AnnieP.

I moved to a more up-to-date picture of me. Although I still like the one from when I was six, so I may change it back one day :)

(I was Amorya on the old boards, for context.)
