I'm ready to go on Holiday!

In the 2021 Queries thread, the subject of Staycations has come up. That led me to think about how much fun it would be to go somewhere either nearby or farther off, just to relax! So, where would you go right now if you could? I think most of us have stayed home for more than a year and would probably really enjoy some time away. We could consider places where it's easy to be socially distanced, or think about (hopefully!) a time soon when we can be a little less cautious!!

In my daydreams, I would love to go tubing on the Ichetucknee again! It would be amazing to stay in a nearby cabin with a nice restaurant nearby, because I'm not going to cook! Then every day, sit and relax in the tube and float for two hours in the 72 degree spring water while watching turtles and fish and birds. Rinse and repeat. No alligators because they don't like cold 72 degree water!

Just thinking of the neon blue water brings joy to my soul.

Where are your daydreams taking you?

I have not been to Oceanside, California, since November of 2019. I look forward to spending a weekend there again, as it is one of my favorite places.

English Lake District, every time. I have little use for beaches and positively dislike hot weather.
  • If going by car then it has to be going to South west Cork - Schull and south from there. Ravishingly beautiful and empty.

However, I think I'm more likely to try to get a good long sail in - maybe take the boat over to the Scilly Isles.
  • Even before the pandemic I was thinking it'd be nice to get away to somewhere in the British countryside, to stay in youth hostels and just walk for a few days. Be amongst the greenness and the trees and the coast. See the wildflowers. I intend for it to be sunny while this happens.

Alternatively, a friend and I discussed going to Italy a few years ago, but never managed it. I'd like to do that now, a driving tour around the country, seeing historic places, especially Rome ... and the inside of lots of restaurants.

Not a day dream, but real... Next January I'll be going with a group from my church and our cathedral to the Holy Land. In fact, I'm filling in my application today. (And I'm buying travel insurance just in case.)

I visited there briefly over 20 years ago with my idiot then-husband and his sister and saw very little. This time will be with two priests who are wonderful people, friends from our two congregations, and an excellent guide.

This all came about just a week ago, and I'm getting REALLY excited!

Spencer is a gorgeous dog, Boogie!

I think the hopeful thing right now for me is that it's getting to the point that it's OK to think about taking a trip! I can't go far because I need to be able to get to Mom and Dad quickly if needed, but with my second vaccine shot coming up next month, and the APs in a safe place, there's reason to hope!

It's so hot here in the summer, the cool springs are a perfect place to be. Maybe I can talk D-U and her dear hubby into considering a short stay there. The cool water and the hot sun work together well. You float on your stomach until your back gets hot, then sit in the tube to cool off that part of the body. Heavenly!

I have just bought tickets to go to Victoria in June where I plan to go on a driving holiday with a friend (from Victoria) including a tour of country bakeries, hot springs and scenic places. There will be many pies and cakes eaten. Hopefully we will see some wombats or other furry wildlife. And visit somewhere with donkeys. I do like donkeys.

It s got to the point here where that little yellow person on a certain search engine will be taken for a walk. In lieu of an actual holidays

When we Can get out and about though? Apart from seeing family in other parts of the UK, we ‘re heading for Kintyre.
  • We've booked for Jersey later in the year ... or, rather, re-booked having scheduled it for last April/last September/next week ... Fourth time lucky???

Well, no one from the UK is going anywhere before 1st July.

It’s not been decided yet. In England, holidays within the UK won't be allowed until 12 April at the earliest, depending on whether the government's conditions for beating Covid are being met.

If they are, people will be able to stay away from home with other members of their household, or bubble, in self-contained accommodation, such as a holiday cottage.

I haven't been there since August 2019, when David and I stayed in my family home for the last time (he died about six weeks later). I'm needing an island fix!

The family had planned to go up last Easter to scatter his ashes and have a memorial service, but that obviously had to be put on hold. Now we're possibly thinking of this summer, but we'll have to wait and see if we can find a time that suits everyone.

The dream vacation we had planned for our 25th anniversary in August 2020 was a Danube river cruise so we could finally see a bit of Eastern Europe, followed by a stop in the UK on the way home to spend a few days in Edinburgh going to the Festival. I wonder when ANY of that will be possible. Both Viking River Cruises and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival seem a bit iffy on their websites about what, if anything, they are doing later in 2021, and frankly, even if it was all systems go, I wouldn't be up for travel outside the country this year anyway. Even travel within Canada is uncertain at this point. I don't expect to be fully vaccinated till July or August at best, and even then, there's the question of what the plague situation might be in different places we'd be visiting.

I'm pretty sure 2021 will be another staycation year for us. We'll hope to celebrate our 27th anniversary with a big trip in 2022, but the original plan for 2020 might end up being broken up into a couple of different trips. We still very much want that trip to Edinburgh, and I still want to see Eastern Europe but I'm no longer certain about the cruise thing. We had never been on a cruise before, not thinking of ourselves as "cruising" types, but this one seemed appealing - however the reputation of cruise ships as floating petri dishes seems like it'll be even more of a concern in the post-COVID world.

I suspect our first post-COVID out-of-country trip might be a couple of days in New York to see a few shows when Broadway reopens, but we'll see!

Trudy, I know what you mean about the floating petri dishes. I really like cruising, not that I have been on many, but it's probably a good idea to see how cruisers fare health-wise for a year or so.

We were lucky to take a cruise (D-U, her dear hubby, my granddaughter and daughter-in-law and me) August of 2019. It had originally been scheduled for January 2020, but on a whim decided to go early to celebrate D-i-L's birthday. Wow. That was a fortunate decision!!

So, looking forward to a future cruise!

  • I'm well overdue for London. In addition to being one of my favourite cities, I have friends there. One of them emailed me this morning regarding Henley (this friend was my four seat in a men's eight 35 years ago) this year, which, assuming that quarantine will be enforced, is just not possible. Perhaps next year. As a former coxie, Henley is on my bucket list.
  • Sadly our trip to Anglesey (to be largely spent yomping round Snowdonia) fell victim to lurgi last year, and this year's spring break in the Lake District was booked for what turned out to be the week before self-contained lets can re-open. So at the moment it's fingers crossed for the Trossachs in August - the senior members of the party will have had both jabs by then as they are getting them this Thursday, who knows about the rest of us?

I'm becoming increasingly desperate to be able to go/see somewhere other than the walls of my flat, the local botanic garden and the canal. And to be able to see something other than urban. OK - I sneaked to a local country park a week or so ago, but that's within the 5miles from your local authority boundary rule so legit....

Anywhere else in the UK would do (no passport means it has to be UK, but that's usual for me) and ideally I'd like either hills or sea. I have booked myself a cottage on the West Coast in May, and am really hoping that I can get there! In principle travel restrictions are supposed to ease end April, but who knows. I'm not even trying to travel outside Scotland, but Glasgow has been in some kind of "Not beyond local authority boundaries" since I think end October and I wouldn't at all put it past the Scottish Parliament to have movement within Scotland, but not elsewhere, so I'm trying hard not to pin too many hopes on it!

I have just booked a cottage for a couple of weeks in the summer. The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales on the doorstep and sufficient ruined castles and walking options within reach to keep all the family happy. Longing for a change of scene from home!
  • No plans to travel anywhere yet. I will see how it goes later in the year.
  • I find holidays stressful enough at the best of times. Trying to manage a holiday with Covid uncertainty, and questions about whether particular activities will be possible this year put me off completely.
  • I have an apartment in Brighton overlooking the marina booked for August; we want to go walking in the South Downs as we have never been there before.
  • Got a cottage in Norfolk booked for a weekend end of April. Can cancel with full refund if Boris says no!

Wife and I have made several unauthorized (read illegal) short trips this past year. But now that we are both vaccinated we want to go further afield. We want to go to Alaska, but the Canadian border remains closed to Americans. And we would love to return to Europe sometime soon.

Yeah, don't travel really people. It is as selfish as hell. Being vaccinated means we don't know if you're spreading virus and just aren't getting sick. Don't stop taking precautions either. The P. 1 variant will make you sick and others you track it to.

We didn't get to BC and skiing, didn't get to an extended family multiday hike in the summer before the winter, we won't get to do other than we've been doing: video and phone calls. Memorial-funeral for my father is postponed to summer 2022 we think. We were hoping for 1 year after death. But it's not promising with the 3rd wave.

The CDC is fine with domestic travel for fully vaccinated people.

I'm headed to a family vacation on a beach in Maine in July. It will be the first real time off I've had since Christmas 2019, as I spent my Christmas 2020 week off cleaning out my mother's apartment after moving her into memory care. I bought the plane ticket after Biden said vaccination would open up in May, and my city is ahead of schedule for people my age; I get the second shot in 2 weeks.

I'm getting more and more excited for the end of this month when I'll be fully vaccinated! Even if going off for a weekend is still not something I can do while being here for my APs, just getting together with friends at a (socially distanced) restaurant will be a tiny, but exciting, holiday!

We have booked a cottage in Suffolk for early July, before schools break up. It has a walled garden, but is part of a larger area of parkland we can also walk in. Not far away is a country park. So even if Mr Puzzler just wants to sit and snooze in the garden, I can go for more interesting walks than those close to home. The coast is within 35 minutes’ drive, and there are two antique centres not far away. If it feels safe, there is also the cathedral city of Bury St Edmunds.
So whilst not very adventurous,( and very flat), it is something to look forward to.

Normally my husband insists on driving and taking his car, which I never drive, but I am toying with insisting on taking my car instead, so I can go off on my own if he doesn’t feel like it.
I am also planning some day trips on the train, to anywhere really.

Today the NZ Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern will make an announcement on the date a Trans-Tasman bubble will open. This means that people will be able to travel from NZ to Australia without having to spend 2 weeks in managed isolation when they come back. I know there are a lot of people to whom this will make a huge difference, especially to people with families on both sides of the ditch, those who are itching for a change of scenery, and those in the tourism industry.

Being a homebody I have no plans to travel, but am pleased for those who will be benefitting from this.

Will be good to see my parents once they are vaccinated - I visited them twice during the Covid lull in August and September, but haven’t seen them since. They are getting their first doses this coming week but won’t have their second doses till much later (Canada is delaying dose #2 to maximize first doses). We’re about 5 hours’ drive apart but perhaps we will make something of a vacation of it and meet somewhere in the middle. Not expecting that to happen till well into summer though.

Having just moved to the other end of the South Downs - I thoroughly recommend it for walking - views for miles and miles and a combination of sea and landscapes. Lots and lots of trails so a walk can be as long or as short as you wish it to be.

I feel relatively spoilt having just moved to the above-place. I would indeed love a getaway but this place is new to me so I can explore.

I would love to go to a hotel tho for a few nights, or a BnB and for someone else to do the cooking and cleaning.

Both these are factors in it being a preferred holiday destination.

(It can also get quite entertaining in persistent bad weather: if the roads are icy enough to prevent beer drays getting in or out of the town, then all the pubs sell Black Sheep and Theakstons - no alternative is available, and the fresh casks from the local plants have to go somewhere.)
