I wish I could do that in Chrome - anyone managed it yet? This font is troubling my eyes.

Answering the "half a fuck"!
You're right of course. But I think there were only three options.
1. Leave out any reference to the FAQs
2. Keep a link to the FAQs but leave them as they were, simply point to their relevance to the old Ship and they were in the process of being updated.
3. Make some modifications to the FAQs in line with the new website, at least to avoid confusing folks who looked at them about Registration and Board Identity.
Admin chose option 3. Given everything else that was going on, I think that was probably the best option.
Modifying the FAQs is always a work in progress and there will probably be further updates. Once the discussion forums and magaziney bits are integrated, no doubt things will look better, and remove the room for confusion.
Please bear with us. There is a good deal of "ongoing" associated with this move.
Having checked in Chrome, it's under
-> Settings (three little vertical dots on top right, drop down menu).
-> Customise Fonts - looking at it the default is Times New Roman but you can choose what you want as default and serif font.
Having just changed my defaults I'm now seeing the Ship in Georgia.
Re FAQs, there will be new FAQs and we will write them to include at least some of the queries posted here since the move. But, one of the reasons for the move was that updating stuff on the old site was a right pain, so we're not going to change the FAQs there on a frequent basis. We should be able to keep FAQs here up to date much more easily, when things are set.
Having just changed my defaults I'm now seeing the Ship in Georgia.
More exotic than viewing the Ship in snow bound London. Is that Europe or US?
I was going to say something facetious but then checked and saw Georgia US had a seaboard, unlike Georgia Europe, so I think that resolves that problem.

Agreed that option 3 is the best option. My suggestion was merely that one of the modifications be adding a heading or notice on the FAQs page to make clear they have been updated as appropriate to apply to the new Ship.
And thanks lilBuddha for being clearer about what I was trying to say than I was.
FWIW, repeatedly answering the same questions is something we knew we'd need to do. It gives us data on what questions get asked frequently, so we write a sensible FAQs (whether using the new software when it comes online, or as a thread here). Remembering that we'll still be answering those questions even when we have a FAQs.
@Nick Tamen and @lilbuddha – I've added a notice on the FAQs homepage to say that the FAQs pages have been revised for the new forums. Hope that's clearer. We'll add new FAQs arising out of Styx threads when we've got a moment.

I'm getting a security certificate warning every time I try to open a thread/new page on my phone (Samsung Android browser) which advises the connection is not private and then states NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID.
Don't know if this something specific that needs attention, my phone being paranoid, or just something that needs time to propagate through the Web systems. I'm getting the message both on WiFi and on mobile intent access.
It does, however, mean each thread requires three screen presses to open.
I think that with the switching between tabs to check the wording, it's also just prevented me fom posting this the first time.
I cannot reproduce that problem on any variation of access at my disposal. Hopefully @pease will be by eventually to do a more insightful review of the issue.
I had a terrible time trying to post using a quote. I must be missing something because others are doing it. When I cut from the longer piece but kept the quote instructions in, my comment was wrapped up in the quote. Then I couldn't figure out how to delete without having the delete curser gobble up swaths of text. Wasnt able to scroll in the draft to change something at the beginning. Finally, I can't see an option to delete altogether.
Help. Im on the verge of becoming a read-only Shippie. (Not really, just frustrated)
The quote works essentially the way as on the old Ship. Except for the number following the name of the person being quoted which creates a link to the quoted post. Delete anything you don't want, and put your reply after the closing tag.
The other difference is if you click quote on multiple posts it will put them all inside the same post, which makes quoting several posts very easy.

Another shipmate reported this to me. Can I make a couple of suggestions:
1. Check the date on your phone. Make sure it is correct.
2. Try connection using wifi for an initial connection.
I have found some indications that the LetsEncrypt certification can suffer from problems on android phones because it uses a short (90 day) expiration period.

Thanks. That's what I did, but it put my reply in the quoted material. Will try cutting a piece of you post to see if it happens again. Already a problem, the reply window won't let me scroll to the top of your reply, so I cut your last (interesting) paragraph to replicate what I tried to do earlier.
Here goes!

PS Victory! But i tried to edit and couldn't scroll to get to it the place I wanted to change after I clicked on edit. Oh well, this should keep me from being sloppy and needing to edit. :
Already a problem, the reply window won't let me scroll to the top of your reply
There is a button to the top right of the reply box (two arrows pointing diagonally away from each other) that expands the box. The cursor will still be at the bottom, it assumes you want to type after the quote. There isn't a scroll bar, but you can move the cursor with the keyboard arrows, and it will scroll all the way to the top. Obviously, that's for a computer. With a phone/tablet it is much harder to navigate around the reply window.

Thank you for taking the time to get me going. I really appreciate it.
I started to ask a question, and then found the answer. Meanwhile, my post had been auto-saved. Rather than look an utter fool, I deleted all that and am making a heartfelt plea: Can we either get rid of auto-save or make it possible to delete a post we've thought better of? This set-up is awkward, to put it mildly.
Can some wise soul explain to me how the Quote Settings work (in profile). The option says
' Quote Folding
How many levels deep should we start folding up quote trees?'
then you can choose various levels, but I have no idea what it means and what effect it has!?
Quote folding is what happens when you quote someone who's quoted someone, who's quoted someone. The software will hide the nested quotes, fold them out of sight (you can click on the post to open them out if you want to read them). The profile option allows you to choose how many levels of nested quotes you want displayed.
Can we either get rid of auto-save or make it possible to delete a post we've thought better of? This set-up is awkward, to put it mildly.
The current route to delete drafts is awkward. Of course, if you subsequently decide to post something else on that thread then you can delete the old content at that point, replace it with what you now want to say and that will delete the draft. I find the saved drafts useful if I get interrupted, I can reload the thread and see if what I'd been composing still works. But, a case could be made for extending the time between auto-saves significantly.
If you’ve created s draft which you don’t want, you can delete it on a desktop/laptop by going to the drafts button (top right near the discussions button). If you open your draft there’s a very faint ‘x’ at the top right which will delete it. I’ve not discovered how to find drafts on my phone.
@Rossweisse - the inability to delete posts, only edit them, has been noted as a problem by more than one shipmate. I would concur that it would be better if we could delete them, but the six minute edit time has ramifications for the readability of the boards. Essentially, people can reply to your post in what is a reasonable time, only to find that the post has subsequently vanished.
There are rumours that the six minute edit will be clawed back when we've all got used to the new boards. That might be the time to bring in the delete button. Until then, preview psot is always your friend, as is the ability to edit a post down to a single .
I'm having the same problem as wayward crucifer with accessing the ship from my android phone, but only if I use the Samsung internet link. If I use google chrome from my phone the ship seems to load fine.

The Samsung browser called Internet is a stripped down version of Chrome. Perhaps it does not contain the necessary code.

Oh - so I can get this in the Samsung browser, but not on Chrome. Another shipmate seems ot get it on both. I know that the Samsung browser is - erm - not quite as with it as some of the others, but it is popular.
I'm getting a repeated error message from AVG each time I open a new window. It isn't delaying me from using the site. I just thought it might help in tracking things back. The error is for an expired certificate. If you want me to try to capture the information on it, let me know.
Using an old version of Chrome on an ancient laptop using Vista. Yes, people, pity me!

Understood. But what if, once one hit "Post Comment," it could not be deleted but merely edited? Isn't that the way the old boards worked?

The old boards let you delete within the edit window (edit, then check "delete this post" box.)
The new boards let you edit, but not delete.
I'm not sure that the "spoiling the thread of the discussion" argument works, though - isn't it just as confusing if I write a post then edit it 5 minutes later to read completely differently
as it is if I delete the post completely?

Yes, it is. Which was why the edit time was short on the old boards, after too many examples of both changing and deleting posts. Changing at least leaves a note that it's been edited, delete means all record that the post existed disappears.
I am dyslexic and fonts which are sans serif make boards much more accessible for me.
I suspect you'll want us to go easy on using colours also?
I find pastel backgrounds the best - cream or pale blue.
“While contrast can be provided by black text on a white background this is not so beneficial when considering Dyslexia. Research suggests that pastel backgrounds, increased line-spacing, font choice and paragraph justification all have an effect.
Source: NGfL Accessibility Workshop 2004”
The worst thing for me, by far, is a lack of paragraph spacing. I just skip large blocks of text entirely. Of course I can use a ruler etc etc - but my Ship time is my relaxing time, not work! I’ve used a thousand coping strategies for work, before I retired I was deputy headteacher of a primary school.

I've managed to change the font slightly via my pc settings but I am finding the white background and white boxes (of each post) very tiring on the old eyeballs. The old Ship's alternate grey/white boxes were easier to read.

A pinned thread in Styx addressing commonly asked questions on the New Ship during the transition.
Many of the questions asked are because things are different, not because they are difficult to figure out.
Posting such a thread would help the transitioning shipmates and might reduce how many times crew need to answer the same questions.
Note: This post is out of pedantic clarification, not concern.
So if anyone detects fucks given, they are supplying those themselves.
OK to change the Ship font to a sans serif font in Chrome I had to go to:
- Settings (three vertical full stops, top right)
- Choose Font Settings
- Choose Advanced Font Settings
- Download the Font Changer add on,
That gave me a FC logo top right - Click on that and set the font to ABeeZeeDon't know if this something specific that needs attention, my phone being paranoid, or just something that needs time to propagate through the Web systems. I'm getting the message both on WiFi and on mobile intent access.

So let's react to the stupid thing I said.
Other times - I should point out - they are fine and speedy. So it is probably just an occasional thing.
(And yes, I hate it when I get error reports like this, but I though it worth mentioning.)

My iPad has a ‘night shift’ mode which helps.
