Is it possible to bring back the "From:" information with user posts? I often find it helpful, when thinking about something a Shipmate has posted, to know where they're coming from (literally and figuratively). Sometimes things make more sense given cultural differences.
• I'll look into it.

You 'announce' it. It'll stick at the top, in the order you announce them.

Oh, so that's what 'announcing' means! It sounded a bit suspiciously like blowing your own trumpet...
• What does the number mean? When I quote somebody the opening quote tag has their name and a four-digit number, like so (only in square brackets):

quote="balaam, 3294"

This then unpacks into "balaam wrote: " and that funny double-greater-than symbol, followed by a line break and what they said.

So it doesn't matter in the least for how I or any other shippie uses the new software, but what does it mean?

It identifies the post you’re quoting. If you click on the >>, it will take you to that post.

• Cool! Thanks.
• Meanwhile, obviously I need to work on my use of the quote button.
• One of the requirements on the old boards, certainly when I signed up, was acknowledging that you were at least 16 to be a member. That seems to have disappeared. Is it something that should be considered?

Another annoying person who would prefer signatures....

(Used to be Oscar the Grouch)

(Signature used to be "Faradiu, dundeibáwa weyu lárigi weyu" and I'm still waiting for someone (anyone!) to ask me why...)

Ok, why the sig? Is it in an African language?

I can't be bothered any more......
...
...
...
...
...
...

Oh all right, then.

The language is Garifuna (look it up) and is part of a song lyric from the late and much lamented Andy Palacio

Weyu larigi weyu

The words mean "Oh Father, guide us (Day by day)"

Isn't your life just a little bit better knowing this?

That was more important when bulletin boards were cool, and impulsive hoards of monsters vulnerable youths threatened to swarm the decks. We're not just uncool now, kids are baffled by our existence. I dare you to find anybody under 26. Besides, it never really stopped them; why pretend we have that capability?

I vote for restoring sigs but limiting them to one line.

Where's the directory gone? I need to PM a shipmate to give them the link to Waving but I don't know where to find them.

They won't need a link now. All the boards that people have access too are visible in the category view. If they can't see Waving, then they weren't added to it when they registered. (Either because they didn't fill in "I am a Waver" in the why you do you want to join box or whoever enabled them forgot).

Just PM one of the Admins with a list when you've got a few and we'll sort it.

Full stops aren't accepted - I lost my ellipsis on transition. I didn't bother to point it out because it was such a minimal change. Maybe -M- would work as I have seen user names including hyphens.

• Can we get rid of the <PREVIEW> button. If we are using Wordpress it should be possible to set the boards to be already in preview mode. The <EDIT> button could be used as a toggle into/out of the screen that shows code.
• I like the new look. Keep up the good work.

Ellipsis is available as … if the box accepts code.

… <-- not done by 3 full stops.

• The log in box would not accept full stops, full stop. I wasn't that bothered so didn't go looking for ways to code it in.
• I'm a bit miffed to see that my posts from the old Ship are not included here - nor my original join date, especially as this was my first foray into the world of social media. :(
• As we said, repeatedly, there was no practical solution to allow us to move registration details from the old boards to the new. But, the old boards didn't include my original join date either (it said May 2001, I joined in July 1999).

Sorry, but this won't be happening any time soon. Captain's prerogative.

We're not using WordPress, the boards software is Vanilla. The PREVIEW button will remain.

It's the new main site that will be using WordPress as its CMS.
• A few points to mention, having read through this thread:
Accessibility – no problem so far.
Font size: no problem for me as Synthetic Dave reads whatever I have the cursor on, whether magnification is on or not.
The all white effect I found quite off-putting, but then I remembered that on the GH message board, which changed a few years ago to a similar layout, I found that using the SuperNova colour scheme – white on black is easier to cope with.
Font size and set colours are not a problem; since starting to use my software, I was recommended to ‘Ignore colours and fonts’ on IE which makes it easier for the voice to work.

Is there anyway of clearing the drafts please? I have a habit of starting a post then leaving it (so it goes to draft) and not picking it up again because the moment has passed. I can imagine my draft numbers ballooning.

Thanks,
Huia

If you navigate to one of your drafts and delete all the text, it goes away.
• BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host
If you have drafts then there is a button to access your drafts on the right hand sidebar at the top of each page near the 'New Discussion' button.. When your drafts are displayed there is a nearly invisible 'x' in the top r/h corner of the draft post. Clicking the 'x' will delete the draft.
• BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host
On the 'home page' for each board, would it be possible to display a link to the last post in each discussion shown? Maybe using the displayed time for the last activity? I don't always want to go to the point at which I last visited a discussion. Sometimes I can see that, say, Rook has made the last post in a discussion, and I just want to see what he has said, and not to read the whole thing.
• RooKRooK Admin Emeritus
The nearly-invisible buttions were fully-invisible before, and much funnier. I keep randomly clicking around the screen to try to find more.
• Is anyone else getting an Error message when posting. Several times yesterday and again this morning a popup window tells me there was a problem and to try again later. However, there seems to be no problem and message is posted correctly, seemimgly simultaneously with the popup.

I really really don't want to be a party pooper, but if you collect any data by which members can be identified (including allowing them to post it), and if you allow members from any EU country ( so that's a hit on both counts) then you probably want to consider restricting membership to those who confirm they are over 16. That's because gdpr (data protection law for EU citizens) requires that you get parental consent for that data gathering, because the Ship would be what's called an "information society service".
• What is the "Quote square at the bottom of posts? Afraid to click on it to find out.

OK going to test this out on my own remark.

Thanks BroJames - I was concerned that the weight of my drafts might sink the Ship. :anguished:

I opted for clicking the x because it was quicker.

I've noticed that in various threads people who have changed their username have commented identifying what their old username was. Would it be possible to have a dedicated thread, maybe in The Styx (or possibly Heaven) where people could just list their old username and their new one for reference if they wished to do so? I'm already getting confused with who is who and it would be nice to be able to look up the information people have given in one place. Of course there are some people who might prefer not to reveal their previous identity...!

Dear hosts, I know you have lots to do and it isn't urgent, but I'm still curious as to why there is now a three letter minimum rule for user names?

And thanks for the suggestions as to other names but I don't know if we are allowed to change our screen names and also, if I have to be something other than M., then MMM is OK.

I also like the idea of a thread of new/old names.

MMM, used to be M.

Not soon, because we've got enough other things to do. However, there are poll plugins that could be tested. Eventually.

Quick check: who likes polls?

(I tried to find a thumbs down emoji, but apparently that is not an option.)

OK, so I understand the crew not wishing to take the time now to implement a feature. And I understand them not taking the time later if there is not enough positive response.
But why on earth should negative opinion matter? No one is forced to take a poll, it does not negatively affect the quality of life of the poll hater. Unless that poll hater is a Circus host.

Some of the tags on the right hand side lead nowhere. I have a suspicion that some of them may belong to private boards? (for example #anxiety #coping). And are the hosts talking about #deadFridayafternoonatwork?
