Okay....I'm going out so will check my pc later (though I'm not techy). Also the font has changed back again...oh well.
  • There is a Chrome plugin called Stylish that you can install that lets you set your own styles on a website.

It's a bit complicated but...If anyone wants to try this out, install the Stylish extension (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish-custom-themes-for/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe?hl=en) and then install the small set of styles I've created at https://userstyles.org/styles/156607/ship-of-fools-forums-access

Click the blue "Install style" button to add them. These styles will then always apply when you visit the forums.

Let me know if you want additional changes and I'll add them to the custom styles.

    Hope this helps someone.
  • If you're using Firefox, there is a default 'theme' that switches the text/background colours, accessible through the dropdown menu top-right. Customise, then at the bottom of the screen, Themes.

My computer is far too old to try those out. I'm used to the technology passing me by. Will persevere.
  • OK, a weird one. If you open two quotes from the same thread, one on the page and one with Open in New Page, the one opened in a new page will not preview code properly.
    Why did I do this?
On the Old Ship, because of the 120 second rule,* I would open multiple quote windows on the same thread, edit and compose replies individually for clarity and then copy paste to consolidate replies. I did that here, and the second window would not preview properly. I showed the code and I spent a few minutes ascertaining that it was not the code within my post.
Not necessarily a "fixit" type of snag. Mostly posting as a heads up and a curiosity.

*And the apparent board etiquette of not doing multiple posts in a row,

I'm getting a security certificate warning every time I try to open a thread/new page on my phone (Samsung Android browser) which advises the connection is not private and then states NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID.

Just to feed back that the error messages seem to have stopped, and I now seem to be able to browse perfectly normally.

    Thank you.
  • The software assumes you'll only post one reply at a time. So, open a second window and you're accessing the same reply in both. I can see how that will create difficulties with the result. A bit like trying to edit the same Word document open at the same time, except Word will open the second as read-only to prevent that. This software isn't that smart.

The simple way of responding to multiple posts in the same post is to click quote on the first post you want to respond to, and add your response. Then click quote on the next post (without trying to open another window) which will put the quote at the end of the post you're working on.

To magicroundabout - just installed Stylish on a Mac laptop with Chrome. No problems, and your custom style displays a clear, sans-serif font with more space between lines. Thanks for your work.

... Which was why the edit time was short on the old boards, after too many examples of both changing and deleting posts. Changing at least leaves a note that it's been edited, delete means all record that the post existed disappears.

I would prefer a shorter edit window to being unable to delete posts. (And more people can just use preveiww.)

There is a Chrome plugin called Stylish that you can install that lets you set your own styles on a website.

I just did this and set all the regular text to being consolas and single-spaced, and it's motherfucking brilliant. Thank you, so much.

Alas, we don't have a ready option to pick that particular Faustian bargain. Maybe @pease will eventually brainiac a way to make something like that happen. I'm sure it'll involve bribery.

Whup - changed it to 1.5 line spacing, and now it's PERFECT.

I've always eschewed plugins but y'all are tempting me.

Tell me, can you make such a plugin site-specific (ie only for here) and is there a Firefox equivalent?

Hi, I have an accessibility problem. I can get the new Ship fine on my desktop, but not at all on my Android phone (Samsung 6). I keep getting a message saying: "Your connection is not private. Attackers may be trying to steal your information from forums.shipoffools.com; its security certificate is not trusted by your device's operating system. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection." This has happened consistently for the last 3 days, since I registered for the new Ship. I am not savvy enough to proceed to the new Ship when it says it isn't safe.

The date on my phone is correct, and I have tried using both my neighbour's WiFi (with his permission) and my mobile phone plan data - same result. And I check my spelling each time. I have also tried NicoleMR's recommendation of switching to Chrome on my phone instead of Samsung Internet - same result.

I am not very tech savvy, and I have read every word of this thread so far. Can someone help?

Interesting. Can you think of anything that was different between the time it didn't work and the time it did (eg wifi instead of mobile connection)?

More generally, it does look like there's an issue with the default browser on Samsung phones - are other people who've had this error seeing the same inconsistent behaviour - sometimes working, sometimes not?

Sounds great. I use safari on my iPad Pro but can’t find a way to install Stylish. Is it an app?

Sadly not. It only works on the desktop browsers.

You can install a one-off script to your browser, but I wouldn't recommend doing so.

This whole thing feels a bit like a mutiny. I hope the captain doesn't mind.

I think making alternative styles available for people who would otherwise struggle to participate in our discussions is perfectly fine. The majority of Shipmates will still be using the default style.

No, I can't think of anything different - I was on the same WiFi connection on both occasions, and I was getting the same error message on different WiFi systems over the weekend. It remains fine now, on another WiFi network, and haven't set any "I accept this website whatever" type settings.

It's probably nothing more complicated than time. As the site is on a secure server, your browser will download a "certificate" that proves the authenticity of the site. When the change happened, there may have been some difference between the information in the certificate you had previously downloaded and the current state of the site.

The certificate would have had a time limit on it before your browser downloaded it again -- that probably expired, so you got a new certificate with all the correct information and everything was hunky-dory.

This is quite a common issue when migrating sites to new platforms/domain names.

...which I am still finding very hard on the eyes, ie the white background, grey text, and very faint grey-lined box around each person's post. I am really really sorry for being so tech-useless but this is not good. I've tried altering the brightness and contrast on my screen but it didn't help much.

The new boards just look very washed out to me :(
  • There are suggestions to improve computer appearance here, based on Windows 7. The same site offers tips for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, should you still be working on these.

I will add, Windows 8.1 stopped being supported in July 2017 so it is not advisable to be using earlier versions. I am also getting used to an updated phone system as my geeky daughter checked what I was using and put me on Windows 10 for the continued support.

I tried to PM someone I knew to be on the New Ship, but went back to the Old Ship when his name didn't turn up. It happened again just now when I tried to write another someone - and then I noticed that the complete name was coming up in white letters on the palest of pale gray backgrounds.

My vision is pretty good, but it's not that good. Is there a reason that names couldn't come up in a contrasting color - say, the same shade as the "Preview" box? This seems unnecessarily difficult.

    Thank you!

I think you go to 'customise' on the top-right menu, and there should be a way of activating them from there... (or add-ons)

Right - I've found a tiny 's' at the top RH of the screen, which is the Stylish thing and says installed. But when I click on it, it goes to the 'style installed' page again...sorry to be really dense but I can't figure this out at all.

Indeed, there is a necessary second step: you need to load @magicroundabout 's Stylish theme.
    https://userstyles.org/styles/156607/ship-of-fools-forums-access

It might activate automagically, or you might need to poke the Stylish control panel to make it take effect.

    About the Blog:

All the links to Community the examples in John Calvin's Newsround and the links to Heaven, Purgatory and Hell are all to the old, with-hyphens forums* at forum.ship-of-fools.com rather than to the shiny new forums.shipoffools.com.

Is updating this in the pipeline?

  • The entire magazine section is getting a re-vamp. A shiny new Ship all round.
  • I am getting odd glitches on private messaging. The first couple of times I sent something I could see it in my inbox. The messages I sent this morning both disappeared, so I sent them again and the second time they both appeared in my inbox, as did the replies.

I've just sent a response to one of those private messages and both my response and the message I was replying to have disappeared.

Ah, the time shows when it’s still the same day of the post and just the date after that? Thought some had found a way to remove the time stamp!
  • Does vanilla by chance have the ability not to display the new comment box by default at the bottom of a page of comments that is not the last?

It seems rather easy for people not to notice that there is an additional page of comments, read to the bottom of the page, and then add their comment. Not displaying the comment box unless/until someone clicked on a quote button would help prevent this from happening.
