    ISTM that this whole sorry business serves us all as A Norful Worning!

    1. Read before you post;
    2. Don't assume you know the gender of any particular Shipmate (we could all be telling massive Pork Pies about ourselves IRL);
    3. Keep replies short, and not too prolix. (I was interested to learn the use of the abbreviation tl/dr);
    4. Maintain a dignified silence (or make a polite, but dignified, withdrawal) if occasion demands.

    Yes, I know - not so much fun for the peanut gallery (to which I myself occasionally repair, if I've run out of Improving and Pious Books to read).....!!

    A number of years ago a Shipmate (no longer sailing with us, I'm afraid) referred to me as "he." Not a big deal with my gender-neutral name -- except she had met me on a visit to Phoenix! (I was even wearing a skirt at the time, since we were on a Mystery Worship expedition.)

    What does your RL gender matter? If you come on here and reveal a particular gender, I'm going to use the appropriate pronouns for you. Whether or not they match the ones that your RL self uses is pretty irrelevant.

    Unless, of course, you use that gender to go stomping all over gender-related threads claiming special knowledge as a member of your adopted gender that you do not in fact have, in which case you'd be being a massive dick. But that's no different from someone lying about some other major fact of their knowledge or background, and claiming standing because of it.

    Generally speaking, I don't think people are that dickish.

    I recently reeled when a regular poster mentioned something about HIS WIFE! I don't know why, but I had always assumed that that particular poster was female.

    If the person simply said ‘my wife,’ they could still be female. Women can have wives too.
  • :lol:

    Nice one!

    Exactly, but the impression this shipmate gave of his/her family life was of a heterosexual marriage with adult children. I just got the wrong end of the stick, and assumed that the poster was the female partner.

    Ah, I see. I do the same sometimes, more based on posting style or screen name. Or I imagine someone younger or older than they are, or a different nationality/accent from what they have. I also find I have images of posters in my mind which are sometimes quite unrealistic - I imagine Piglet as an actual piglet, for instance, and RooK as an actual rook, even though of course I know they are human beings!

  • Well, that's easy to do - but my point still applies.

    Anything posted by anybody on these boards, especially if referring to personal details or RL, could be false (or, in current parlance perhaps, Fake News)!

    Poor WildHaggis, ISTM, made rather too many assumptions along these lines, hence her fall from grace. I hope that she's learnt from the experience, that her earlier flounce will be temporary, and that she'll return in due time with shorter (and less nagging) posts.

    :smile:

  • Another assumption ... how do you know that Piglet isn't an actual piglet and RooK isn't a large corvid which subsists on worms and insect larvae which it prises from the ground with its hefty bill?
  • WildHaggis' fall from grace had as much to do with how she treated other people as with guessing wrong about sex/gender.
  • Hmm....do Piglets sing alto and eat SOUP?

    RooKs, OTOH.....

    As for some of us, our usernames might well give a clue as to who or what we are IRL, but, again, it could all be Porky Pies.

    Like Religion generally, I suppose.

    Yes, that is so.

    You would!
  • @RooK - these eyeballs if I remember correctly.

    Indeed. Cunningly provided by Doublethink, and I didn't ask where she got them. Because it is rude to be too questioning of bribes.

    What DOES “to/dr” mean?

    A better question is whether officers emeritus might willingly receive chocolate ...

    (Shouldn’t it be “TL/DNR,” then?)

    Thank you!

    Oink oink!

    I'll take that as a compliment. :smiley:

    This one does! :mrgreen:
  • Anyway, a Well-Known Online Encyclopedia says that the Orkneys are the "islands of the pigs", following the Old Irish "Insi Orc".

    It means that there is an inside joke at play. Just nod and smile with the majority of us.

    My apologies - I must have hit "post" twice. :blush:

    Probably means that Piglet has been here for a couple of millennia, and in that time you are the first person ever* to grasp the significance of her username!

    *at least, this is the first time I've heard it, and I've been here (and there) a while meself.
  • Yes, I have always thought in terms of Winnie-the-Pooh.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
    It sort of is in terms of Winnie-the-Pooh - Piglet is my favourite character.

    I really must stop perpetuating this tangent ... :blush:
  • But surely the point of tangents is that they fly off into infinity ...

    Just as a reminder, the purpose of this thread is to allow comments on @WildHaggis' complaint and more importantly at this point, allow her to seek clarification. Not spin tangents.

    I know, right?! Bet Rook looks normal with those cool black shades the Corinthian sported! Or, were his mirrored?
  • Sorry! I saw the warning about tangents a bit too late for the edit window...
