Questions / Requests on the new boards

  • I am wondering whether there would be any mileage in having a locked and closed thread in Styx that covers frequently asked questions as I am noticing a certain repetiveness in requests. Shipmates will still post queries wherever but at least it will mean the hosts will only have to link to the FAQ thread where the relevant post is.

That sounds like a really good idea, JJ.
  • I find that I have a draft post - I know that there's a little I con to click on to remove it, but although I know I'm looking in the right place - and have a lovely over-sized mouse/cursor/hand now! - I can't find the icon. .

When I first went to drafts, there was something there - the quoted part of a post I must have thought of responding to I think, I hovered the mouse and it changed to the hand and I clicked on it, so I think Ive upset something.sorry about that. No rush for answer, but help will be appreciated.

That sounds right, actually - when you hover the mouse over the X you're supposed to click on, it turns into the hand, you click, and the draft should be deleted.

Unfortunately, in the place where the icon should be the cursor did not change into the hand. I'll have another try today.

You are trying to log in
     too often! Slow down!

White on red background. And isn't true. I never save logins, both computers and phone are set up to always delete all cookies when leaving a website. All devices are set to to remember form info so that username and p/w is saved on login page.

No functionality affected. Thought to just provide info re.

I've seen that screen - I think it's because I tried logging in twice in quick succession. I don't have log ins set up either.

I'm not sure where to ask this, but decided that the Styx was as logical a place as any: Where is the post count thread? I expected it to be in Heaven (and I know there is one), but didn't find it there.

    Thank you!

I found it, Rossweisse. It's in All Saints: here.

I tried the little search box in the top right corner, and did a search for "post count". Because it's two words together, you can put quotation marks around them, so it doesn't find all the individual instances of each word, but just the two words together.

    Thank you, fineline.
  • I have been cursoring around the page and I cannot hear the word 'search'. Could someone please tell me how to search for a paticular poster? I would just like to see if someone has posted anything recently. thank you.
  • There is a search box on the top right of the page, just under the area where you find the links to your profile.

There's another way of searching for someone: type @[name of person], and the software will suggest names part way through as a drop down menu. Choose the name you want to check on, preview that post, and click on that name, which will take you to their profile. Then remember to delete the draft post.

Many thanks - I will have a go at that later today.

The search box doesn't appear on all the pages. It's on the categories page, the discussions page, and each individual category page.

But if you want to see if a particular user has posted anything recently, you'll need to look at the list of comments which is linked on their profile page. If you know their exact username, you can directly enter the URL for their comments page as https://forums.shipoffools.com/profile/comments/<username>
  • (SusanDoris uses text-to-voice software as her eyesight isn't best...)
  • Thank you for further help and comments, much appreciated. Following CK's advice I cursored around a few pages found 'search' and put in @name - found that the poster concerned has not posted recently.

I don't have a question, but I think it's funny seeing after more than 8 months of having tags on the Ship, that Jesus and Trump are still tied with three points each.
  • Question - could we have images in posts? Is it possible with the software? Is there a chance it might be allowed?
  • Really, you don't want images in posts. I moderated a board with images and don't ever want to go there again.

I frequent a board which just wouldn’t be the same without images.

    Horses for courses.

They are possible in the software, but the IMG tag has been deliberately disabled. Pease mentioned this in the practice thread recently, here.
  • We're a discussion forum, and we discuss with words. Images are a major distraction from quality discussion. Though, in 20 years there have been two or three occasions when a diagram might have been useful ... but, not frequent enough to consider it worthwhile.

The image ability has been disabled here, as it was on the UBB boards.

Well, if they're pictures of puppies I'd be happy!

But I'd hate to see the Ship cluttered with every cute GIF that people feel a need to share.

    Agreed. Or snarky GIFs.

But there have been times—perhaps particularly in Ecclesiantics discussions?—when I’ve thought it would helpful to be able to post a “This is what I’m talking/asking about” sort of picture. Yes, I know we can link to a picture, but there are times I think it’d be nice to have the picture in the post.

But as I said earlier, I completely understand why the decision was made not to allow pictures at all.

It's bad enough that there are smileys.

I still miss the old ones.

  • OK - I am happy with the decision, but was just interested. And I do agree that getting them all over all of the posts is a bad idea. I guess it is just for some occasions that an image would really help.

No problems, but I wanted to raise the question.

Pop over to My Labrador Friends, the place is full of them! We are a new forum and slowly building a membership but we don’t yet show on Google. You don’t need to have a Labrador. (Or a dog!)

I’m Boogie on there too

The Ship used to have a prohibition against that as well. Not sure if it's still valid.

    He says that everywhere.
  • On the subject of smileys, is there a list, or a link to a list, of what the codes are?
  • BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host
This claims to be a complete list.

When you’re writing a post, if you type a colon (:) then a letter, a drop down list of emoticons which begin with that letter appears.

I don’t know how that will play with your visual assistance software.
  • Some of that list don't work here, having tried a few I didn't recognise:

Sadly :loser:, :murica:, :bring_it:, :cow:, :ohstop:, :pig:, and :transformer: are among those that are missing, just from the first column. Because I can see uses for :ohstop: and

Wow, that's good to know. Thanks. So far every one I've tried on the UBB practice thread works just fine.
  • BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host
You’ve reminded me that @Alan Cresswell linked to this list on the first page of the BBCode practice thread in Styx.
  • Neither list has : cookie : or :cookie:
    And ours does.
  • I listed out all I could find on the BBCode thread - but I am not sure I found all the options.

Thank you for the list with translations. I cannot even tell which of the symbols in the lift holds the doors open; I am forever closing them in someone's face, so have not dared to use emoticons here for fear of what I might inadvertantly suggest!
  • Many thanks for the above posts. I will have a practice and see what I can do.
  • BroJames wrote: »

Actually, it’s emoticons that begin with or contain that letter. For example, the drop-down list for :a will include “angry” and “naughty.”

  • The drop down menus for smileys doesn't give them all if you give a starting letter or a letter in the middle. I listed out all I could find on the BBCode thread, then went looking for the missing ones.
  • finelinefineline Kerygmania Host, 8th Day Host
For me, it gives five emoticons in a dropdown menu. If fewer than five begin with the letter I've typed in, it also lists those that have the letter as the second letter, then the third, etc. Unless, for instance, it is 'j' which is only in one word.

If more than five emoticons begin with the same letter, you won't see more than five unless you add a second letter. Like with 's'. It shows five, but if you add 'l', it shows 'sleepy' and 'sleeping,' which it wasn't showing before. I think s must be the only letter that applies to, from the list you posted in the practice thread, Ck.

Dear H&A: If we could pin @Curiosity killed’s post with all of the smileys and their codes, it would be a great resource for everyone, I'm thinking.

Yes, I was wondering if there was a way to pin it, or put it in the FAQ or something.

(edited to add: just realised I'm an 'H', but I have no idea how to do this, so I think it's something for the 'A'!)
  • RooKRooK Admin Emeritus
    Just to clarify:
Are you asking for one of the smiley-infested threads to be pinned, or are you asking for the compiled list of current emoticon-options to be transferred to a new thread for pinning?
  • The mechanics of it aren't so important, and I'm sure I don't understand how all that works with the new software (just as I didn't understand it with the old software). What would be handy is an easy-to-find place where you can go and see a complete list of possible emoticons on the new Ship.
