  • It would easy to copy and paste that list I made onto a locked and pinned new thread called smileys. And then point to that thread whenever anyone asked about smileys ever again.

Given RooK’s well-known enthusiasm for the things, surely he’s the obvious person to do it. :naughty: :innocent:

Ha, I like RooK's list, with just the smiley face. That does tend to be the only one I use anyway, as I find the others ambiguous.
  • BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host, 8th Day Host
I love @RooK's list - although it is rather longer than I expected.
  • I love @RooK's list too.

However, I suppose I ought to point out I created the slightly fuller list to answer SusanDoris's question realising that she might not be able to access some of the other options.

... and much appreciated - thank you.

I have just looked at Roo K's post and that definitely needs the  ... but obviously I haven't got that one right yet!

  • finelinefineline Kerygmania Host, 8th Day Host
SusanDoris, the code for the big grin is mrgreen. (Not sure if that will read right - it’s Mr Green, but all one word.) The smiley has a green face as well as a huge grin!

You can also use  (grin) or  (smiley) which have a big grin and yellow face.
  • We don't need any of those fancy grins. What we need are :notworthy: and :killingme:

You have noticed that both those smileys are moving gifs not static smileys as are found on this board?

You can use a candle - this one: 🕯 which works on most browsers and platforms because it is a symbol from Wingdings. You need to know the HTML code
    🕯

Board culture on Ye Olde Shippe™ meant we used those smileys the way we did. There is nothing to stop board culture adapting and using the smileys we have in similar ways.
:naughty: (naughty) or  (mrgreen) could be replacements for :killingme: and
:+1: (thumbs up - coded as +1) or :cookie: (cookie) could be used instead of :notworthy:, although these are less obvious replacements.

(I don't like the myriad of not very clear yellow faces either, as it is not quickly obvious to spot what is being used, particularly on phones.)

Though, not Chrome on Windows 8 (unless, that is, you wanted a small blank square).

  • I did say most platforms and browsers.

Yes, we can, and I have. But it doesn’t look like a votive candle; it looks more like something over which Jack might nimbly and quickly jump.

I understand completely why we don’t have the votive emoticon anymore, and overall the trade up for the shiny New Ship™ was more than worth the move. But there are a few things I’m nostalgic about from days of yore, and the votive emoticon is one.
  • And that votive is also a moving gif
  • Yes, I know. As I said, I understand why it and the other emoticons mentioned aren’t available. Really, I do get and accept that. But understanding and accepting why they’re not available doesn’t mean I don’t miss them.

I didn't realise prayer candles have to look a certain way. I use a big candle at home.

Well, it's nice if they at least look like candles, and not just rectangles on some computers.

  • fineline wrote: »

They don’t, of course. But there’s something about the way that the old ones looked like votive candles typically found in (some) churches—candles lit with a specific person and intention in mind, rather than lit while praying generally.

And yes, I realize that different traditions use different kinds of candle for this purpose. Nostalgia needn’t be logical.

Is it just me or have all posts now got only the month and year of posting on them, not the actual day - apart from today's posts, which have the time?

I was talking about the candle I see, which Nick was talking about. The fact that some emojis don't show on some devices is a different issue, I think.

I didn't grow up with the tradition of candles for prayer at all. Otherwise I probably would have that association. I still don't fully understand prayer candle symbolism.

Yes, same. I have no idea of the dates of these replies to me I am replying to, other than December 2018, but this is the first time I have seen them.

  • Yes, they seem to note the year is different and have changed accordingly. I wish they would also check whether it was January and only change on the 1st February so that during January all the December posts had day, month and year and only in February do the December posts become month and year. This is software stuff though and I suspect there is not much anyone can do. If programmed properly it would not depend on year change but the number of days since posted. Back in the old days grumble, chunter, grumble, chunter etc.

I think I have been in this computer lark too long.

Nor did I, but I have always been drawn to the practice. John Knox is, I’m sure, spinning in his grave—especially as use of candles for prayer has started to make some inroads among my tribe in the last few decades.

I didn't know about the practice until I joined Ship of Fools, so my first association with prayer candles was a virtual candle! It seems that here different denominations used the same virtual candle.

    Ecumanism at its best.

Thank you. Do you know how I'd do the equivalent of that on a touch screen?
  • I can't make it work on my phone, need to boot up the tablet to try to see if it will work there.
  • finelinefineline Kerygmania Host, 8th Day Host
I don't think it works on an iPad - those things where you have to hover a mouse generally don't.

John Knox is hardly one to talk; there's a life-size Graven Image of him in St. Giles's Cathedral. (I was tempted to light a candle in front of him, but That Would Be Wrong.)

Ha! True, though he was not, of course, responsible for that Graven Image, given that it dates to 1906. But perhaps his spinning over that wore him out enough that there’s no energy left to spin over me.

Does anyone else find that the 'Prayers of the faithful' thread doesn't always show in 'recent discussions', even when its most recent post is recent enough to be on the first page there? I sometimes have to specifically click on 'All Saints' to find it.

I have wondered if this is because it's a pinned post (and I think the only pinned post I specifically look for each day, to pray for the needs - so if it happens with other pinned posts, I'm not so likely to have noticed) but it doesn't happen consistently. Sometimes it is in the recent posts, and other times it is not - even when I click on page 2 and page 3, etc., to find it. Right now it should be on page 2 of recent discussions, but it isn't for me.

(Edited to add - I should add I know there is a new one now, and that is the one I mean today, but in the past it happened with the old one.)

John Knox is hardly responsible for the actions of his followers. His grave is in the church's parking lot.

Oh, I know - I just couldn't resist a little snark. But I didn't know that about his grave. (I will refrain from further snark.)

It's not showing for me either, I've just double checked. And someone else has mentioned an issue on the prayer thread.

OK, my apologies. It shows my posts as being the latest on the thread but the date is wrong. I did not see that before. It is 4/1, almost 5/1 and while it shows me as being latest poster, it also says date is 2/1.

I do not know if this is relevant, but 2/1 is the date of the last post on 2018 thread as it was closed then.
  • finelinefineline Kerygmania Host, 8th Day Host
Loth, I was just coming to post that too. Today it is still not in most recent threads. If I click specifically on All Saints, it is there, but it says the last post was 2 January. It said that yesterday too, so I didn’t click yesterday, because I thought there must be no more prayer requests posted, but today I clicked and there are loads of new ones, from yesterday and today.

I don’t think it’s because it’s a pinned post, as I noticed I see pinned posts from a private group in the recent posts.

Also, when the new prayer thread was made, it was actually showing in the most recent posts, and I remember it went to the top of the page when I posted in it. But mine was only the third post. I wonder if once you’ve posted in it, then it stops moving up if anyone after you posts. I will click the star and see if that makes a difference - then I should at least get notifications.
  • finelinefineline Kerygmania Host, 8th Day Host
To add, the date of the last post on the closed thread shows as 1 January for me. Loth, I think it shows as the 2nd for you because of time difference. I am in the UK. Piglet closed the thread and made the new one, and I think it was 1st Jan in her timezone too, but a few hours earlier than the UK.

Hmm... It is quite intriguing. Ah - I see that it was a sinking thread (probably an inadvertent click), which means that new posts wouldn't register on any lists of "recentness".

    Whoops...
  • peasepease Tech Admin
I think it should be possible to elevate it once there's a newer post on it...
  • Your post on the thread seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks!
  • peasepease Tech Admin
Good. I inadvertently dismissed it, but at least that only affects me...
