Bright new idea: A forum on Genealogy
Since genealogy is the second most searched thing on the internet, the first being porn. How about a separate form on Family History/Genealogy?
I had no idea genealogy was so popular!
In a dull moment at work I ran some Google searches to do with my family history, and since then I have uncovered all kinds of curious facts and speculations about my ancestors that I doubt my parents ever knew. Although I'm not a trained genealogist, I'd love to read about researches into local and family history on SoF.
If the PTB endorse the idea, I'd participate. I've spent a bit of time digging into my family history in the past year or so, and had lots of fun.
Perhaps a thread in Heaven could start some discussion for those interested. If it seems like there's enough interest and scope for multiple threads then you can always organise a proposal for running it on the 8th Day board.
I was going to suggest a thread - as I've been discussing medieval houses today with someone refurbishing one, I'd certainly join in.
Shipmate, Waving not Drowning Host, 8th Day Host
I would think there might be potential for an 8th day board - not least because there are a range of directions that could be taken (each quite distinct). But see if there is any further interest.
I’d be interested in discussing family history research.
I did put a thread on the Heaven Board. Thing of it is, there are a number of variables in such a thread. People looking for particular last names. Questions about resources; stumbling block; what we learn about our family history. Different apps that can be used. I personally do not think one thread can cover it all.
I'd be interested in a general discussion of microhistory and local history rather than just family history.
For example, a few years ago I was able to begin to piece together the 100+ year history of shops on a short bit of road where I lived at the time. More recently I used newspaper archives to try to cross reference the details of miners who died in an 1880 accident. None of these are related to me, but the unknown details of local stories fascinate me.
That sounds fascinating mr cheesy. I'd like to hear more about what you, and others, discovered, and how to start such a thing.
I'd be interested - I started a thread on DNA testing which is still running.
I'm interested too. I nearly started a thread on family history but wasn't sure if there was much interest in the topic and then Priscilla started the dna thread the same week.
Shipmate, 8th Day Host
I would be interested.
Rufus T Firefly
Count me in
North East Quine
I'd be interested.
Marvin the Martian
Sounds like there's enough interest for a new Eighth Day board once Write or Wrong finishes.
If you can sort out two or three Hosts and a board description/guidelines I'm sure we can put it in the queue
I would be interested as well.
Marvin the Martian
Please note that The Eighth Day is now available, if some of you want to put together a proposal for a genealogy board.
