I should perhaps say I am, I hope, no Little-Englander, having attended Catholic masses in Czech, Korean, Tagalog, Spanish and several in French whilst being only rustily fluent in the last of these languages. However, the wonder of the Catholic mass - and of Anglicans who use Common Worship - is that the format and texts are so closely aligned that one knows what is being said or sung right through the service apart from the readings. One can follow in ones head, in one's own language (mine is UK English).
I once went to a Danish Lutheran service that was the equivalent of Morning Prayer in a suburb of Copenhagen. I had no idea what was going on, so closed my eyes and meditated. Afterwards at the door the jovial Minister - wearing a spectacular starched collar of the 17th century sort - greeted me warmly in English. He had worked out that I was a foreigner, and which sort. A friendly welcome, but I thought honesty was the best policy and told him I was so bemused by the service I had tuned out and meditated, so didnt think I had simply fallen asleep. 'How marvellous' he said, 'you must come again'.
