@Barnabas_Aus I did a very similar thing coming of the sanctuary steps Sunday week ago. Thankfully, a few minutes before the service. Was very careful every time I had to move around while presiding at the Eucharist. It's important to note the difference between "fell" and "had a fall". The latter only belongs to *old* people. I insisted I fell over!
Commiserations BA. I find that as I get older I'm more liable to do this kind of thing and take longer to bounce back afterwards.
This week I'm starting a short course that uses some basic yoga aimed at helping me be more physically flexible and improving my balance.
Today the temperature reached 29.4 C, and tomorrow the forecast is for 33c. Christchurch's highest ever temperature is 41.6C. I hope that never happens again while I'm here.
I was feeling very pleased with myself this morning. I woke early, got the morning quiz correct on local radio. Got ready to go out for a massive weeding session as we'd had beautiful rain last night. Alas I was foiled by the rotted handle on weeding tool breaking just as I was getting going. Unfortunately, I'll now have to wait for husband to mend, but I did get about one square metre done, which now makes the rest look worse! Ah the best laid plans ...
Am certainly enjoying the fact that the temperature has now dropped to mid 20's from almost mid30's at the weekend and am enjoying the excuse to sit around and do not much!
Pleased to say that my condition is steadily increasing of health and (i think) even brains. Certainly the bandages are now out of me all since this week , and I even managed successfully this morning all the walk to our church solo which is a shape 1.3 km. Although of course still a few more bits as things for doctors to work on me still some occasional days over next month or two from time to time.
Unfortunately there is even a sun wound that loving wife needs to turn once also surgeon for a day or two this time. Since she was led originally in England, she recognises it's been a harsh hit to her, as branching British size "summer" were hardly much of a cancel hazard by tropical or Australian standards.
16C is the high today. If this was winter it would be a reasonable temperature, but given the high temperatures we have had lately it was a bit of a shock to the system, still it means I can get things done, rather than being knocked sideways by 30C plus.
I love the cool days of summer for having a catch up with things that lapse when it's too hot to do much. I do hope Aroha will get a sunny day soon to top up her warmth battery!
My bank, for reasons best known to itself, has decided to change all account numbers for all my accounts. This has led to bills that were on automatic payment not being paid, and various other problems.
Today there wasn't enough money in the account I was using to pay for my groceries. I just switched to pay with another card (which I knew would have sufficient funds). Meanwhile the man in the queue behind me got out his bankcard and offered to pay. I was overwhelmed. I explained that I actually did have enough money, just not in that account. I also thanked him profusely and said that if I were in real need I would have accepted his kind offer.
I am grateful that there are people around who are willing and able to reach out when they perceive a need. When all my accounts are back to normal I'm going to make a donation to City Mission in thanks for this man and people like him.
A magnitude 5.1quake was felt in Christchurch about an hour ago according to the news. I didn't feel anything. This is my favourite kind of quake, along with the many I have slept through.
@Huia, am glad those rumblings have not been strong enough to feel! Are they still occurring, or have things settled down again?
We are expecting a hot few days, but cooler by Sunday which I am looking forward to. Despite having a few years at the Back o'Bourke I am not a fan of hot weather.
My lounge has windows on the north side which are lovely. I leave the curtains closed in summer though as the room can get quite hot. I peeped out this morning after hearing a cockatoo flying past. There were no cockatoos in the trees, but they have certainly been in the trees there since Sunday - snips off the Manchurian pear everywhere!! I won't race out to do anything about it as there will be more by Sunday.
Had a lovely visit with friends at the weekend. My roses were at all various stages of blooming so I was able to take a nice bunch to my friend. I love sharing things from the garden.
I didn't feel them, but a lot of people in Christchurch did. I think some people have more sensitivity to feeling quakes, possibly due to post-traumatic stress, but also because of the kind of the land they are living on.
Also I know I missed feeling several quakes because I was travelling on a bus. I wish I could find some research about people's perceptions of what they feel because it would be fascinating.
Today is the first morning where I've woken up and can detect a coolness in the air - welcome Autumn!!
Had my weekly phone call with Aged Aunt today. She is getting on a plane today and will have a fortnight catching up with family and friends. We are looking forward to seeing her and I'll chat with sister today about what we might do as a family activity or two whilst she is here. We will have her company for the first weekend of her trip home. Weather should be warm, so some indoor/outdoor activities planned.
Will spend some time this week making sure house is fit for visitors, not white glove clean, but not putrid in some essential areas!
Definitely autumnal - dull, overcast, a bit of a breeze and even by 11, still only 21 degrees. Everything is very quiet. Just sitting with a cup of tea and doing nothing. Welcome indeed to the new season, and to your AA.
Heading out to a country pub today to celebrate a friend's 70th birthday.
The sky is an ominous dark pewter colour, and the maximum temperature is forecast to be 17C. Time to put aside my summer sandals and wear proper shoes. Daylight saving ends this coming weekend.
I've finally made an appointment to update my will as family circumstances have changed. I have been thinking about this for a while but other things kept coming up. Finally I decided to make an appointment for 3 weeks ahead which means I can use the interim time to sit down and plan it out. There's nothing like having a deadline to concentrate the mind. All my university essays apart from the last one were handed or posted in just before the deadline. The last was a week early, just to prove to myself I could do it.
Thanks for your kind wishes for AA @Gee D. I've just had a text to say she's arrived and staying with her friends. I could report in that I have touched base with sister and plans are underway!
@Piglet, I like the sound of that temperature, much hotter than that and I begin to flag! I've just come in from half an hour of weeding, it's supposed to get hotter from today onwards.
I hope your friend's birthday celebration goes off well @Huia. Sounds like fun, the will updating not so fun, but totally necessary!
Prehaps a bit of self-interest in past days, but I'd say that everyone should review their will each 5 years. Not with a view to cutting someone out, but rather to think about the bequest - is that now an appropriate remembrance for the particular person or should it be increased (and at whose loss), and so forth. And sometimes it may be better to cancel a bequest - eg the beneficiary is now in a nursing home and the gift would reduce any benefit that might otherwise be received

I took advantage of the Birthday Bloke who is now lined up to have my EPOA (Enduring Power of Attorney) and to take charge of any cats whose Slave I might be when I die or am no longer able to take care of them. He's already one of Aroha's favourite people, so that's good.
I know that my next door neighbour would like to buy my house but she probably won't have enough money unless I live another 10 years, I told her I would do my best to accommodate her.
I've been meaning to renew my Will for ages (it was made when we got married and bought our first house, 36 years ago) and put a POA in place. The difficulty is getting one of my bosses when they're not too busy (and even at that I'll have to type the bloody thing myself ... ).
@Piglet, I do hope you manage to score a freebie!!
Up early this morning and have made choc brownies in case sister brings visiting aunt for a coffee unannounced! When I've posted here, plan to make a ginger cake and get kid out of bed.
Today the kid has an echo and next week will have a Cardiology appointment, so trying to hose down my anxiety and not rev their own up! Cheery husband will come home later to do the appointment while I get on with home jobs in preparation for visitors.
I was a bit cross that we weren't going back to the local hospital for all the above, but I think the GP has been savvy in sending us private means we've gotten an appointment 2 weeks after our referral was made. Also serves as a second opinion for outpatient who doesn't fit into any of the regular boxes. It will be good to have both these appointments. So feeling thankful.
Am also ringing a couple of national institutions to find out their parking arrangements for tomorrow's family activity. We are not a huge family, but the job of organising them all seems to feel as though we are a family of 12 not 6!! We rarely get to be all together, so hoping we have a fun day.

I don't know of the position in Scotland, but the law here says that any will you have when you marry is automatically revoked by the marriage EXCEPT if the will states that it's made in contemplation of your marriage to a named person, that person being the one you marry. So if the will says that it's made in contemplation of marriage to Joe Smith and you marry Bill Bloggs instead, it's still revoked. The position in England used be much the same, but who knows what's happened there.
Thanks - Legislators are generally reluctant to change technical rules upon which generations have relied unless there's a very good reason otherwise (such as grabbig extra taxes). I thought it probably was.
I've found multiple days in the 30s very trying. Church today was an ordeal particularly trying to sing in all the choir robes. We are desperate for rain and the poor garden is in a state of despair as are the farmers. At least it is Autumn now and maybe the weather will become a little kinder. I don't know how those of you in the tropics cope.
Sending commiserations @rhubarb. 25C is about my maximum temperature. Fortunately I live close to the sea and the easterly wind helps keeps summer temperatures down. Of course the "beasterly easterly"does the same in the winter, when it is not enjoyed.
Today is the first morning where I've woken up and can detect a coolness in the air - welcome Autumn!!
For the first time this year there was ice on my windscreen as I set out yesterday. Well not when I set out because I'd washed it off, but prior to that .
Go away Autumn. I'm still waiting for summer. What's that line in the song? "Well maybe next year."
Out and about at the weekend with Aged Aunt and sister. Saturday disappointing outing made better by a very delicious sandwich - ham, pesto, sundried tomato topped with onion jam. Quite the best sandwich I've eaten in years!! To be fair the attraction is preparing a new display, so the one available to view was very small and only took about 40 mins. We ended our family outing with a gathering at my place and daughter showing photos of her trip to China at the end of last year. Family said the photos were great, but they could hardly complain, as they were a captive audience!!
Sunday a trip to a village 10-15 mins from my home, where we visited a small local museum. I had thought it might not be very interesting, but the volunteers have done a wonderful job on the exhibits. Some artefacts from pre colonial times with descriptions. A wonderful display photos, maps and artefacts of early days of white settlement and the growth of the district, with an emphasis on farming families, some of whom still live locally. A small display of local families and their WW 1 participation, with the war service records of all the local chaps. A bigger display of education in the local district, with a small schoolroom in a boiling hot weatherboard building. Then 3 rooms of further displays with "old stuff", very similar to my home furnishings, Art Deco chairs, iron cot, ancient cash register and old fashioned toys. It was really enjoyable and Aged Aunt enjoyed a chat with a retired local teacher who had a connection with someone she knows. So a much better excursion, but the old schoolhouse was so hot, both my sister and I felt physically unwell. So glad to be born in modern times!
Followed this lengthy hot excursion with another cafe visit and a very tasty bacon and egg roll on a brioche bun and a caramel milkshake. I haven't had a proper milkshake in years!
There was a local public holiday yesterday. Met some former work colleagues for lunch after taking my sister to the airport. Again, very yummy lunch of zucchini balls and salad. It is my go to at this particular cafe, always tasty and filling.
I think I am maxed out on outings, though I do have another friend who wants a coffee at the end of this week and another day with Aged Aunt next week before she returns to her home interstate.
I was thinking of @Zappa when I was in the boiling hot school house on Saturday, thinking this would be right up their alley, my preferred temperature aligns more with where you live @Huia! We are expecting a cool change in a day or so and I can't wait!!
That's amazing Zappa. I noticed the mornings getting a bit colder, but nowhere near having ice on windows here. The colder north easterly wind, which I sometimes enjoy in summer, does bring down the temperature a bit though,
My tablet, which I use as an ereader is dying. I have bought a Kobo ereader and a nice technician, who knows how to sort it all out will come and do so on Friday. I think i might have to take it to the library for the libby app to be installed, Meanwhile I am madly sorting out the computer room which has become incredibly messy when I wasn't looking - personally I blame the cat.
My bedside radio has chosen to go out in a show of solidarity with the tablet. Fortunately replacement is much simpler, not to mention cheaper.
Coming in from my corner of the southern hemisphere to share @Huia's relief at cooler weather. The Cape is lovely in autumn (a very short autumn, but still) and we have all kinds of nerines and wild lilies flowering right now.
22c was the maximum here today - but no beasterly easterly to cool it down .further
My favourite part of the on-line forecast is the list showing the previous day's hottest, coldest, wettest and windiest parts of NZ. Stats are also given for the current day. So yesterday morning my area of Christchurch was the windiest in the country, by by the end of the day a small off shore island held that honour - as it often does.
@Huia my favourite forecast of the day is seeing the Wildfire Risk Index go from red or orange alerts down to yellow, brown or green!
Out here in the Overberg, I miss the famous south-wester winds we had in Cape Town, known as the Cape Doctor, because these were sea winds that blew in across Table Bay and cleared all the smog from the city bowl.
It seems a long time since we had a good southerly but one really does cool everything down quickly. One late this evening would be very pleasant, not too early as we're visiting friends for a bbq and their house looks sou-west.

As someone who comes from a Small Offshore Island (are there any other sorts?), I can confirm that they usually hold the honours for Windiest Place!
Yay for a coolish change last night and a drop of rain! Am about to begin getting ready for time with a friend today and a cuppa. I'd be looking forward to it more if I hadn't had an exhausting day with Aged Aunt yesterday. Not exhausting because she has additional needs, but a day of driving (which I do little of at present) and entertaining (which is not my gift). Had a lovely time together, but next week there will be peace from mid-week onwards and I am anticipating with joy a return to normal routine.

Aroha, being a heat loving cat is not happy.

The epicentre of this series of quakes is much further away than the one which flattened areas of Christchurch which was less than 1 km from my house.
