  • I quite fancy an Iranian restaurant and shops in the vicinity. But we do fairly well from random Eastern European and Turkish food at the corner shop.

Heavy rain overnight but clear today, if blustery. I did a huge amount of marking so I am pleased with that.
Tea was butterflied sardines with a warm leek, butterbean and spinach salad topped with labneh (Middle Eastern yoghurt cheese) and lemon zest. I am currently drinking an Austrian red which Mr Heavenly finds a bit acidic but I think it is fine.

Our son is home for the weekend and we headed off this evening to a ceilidh to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day at my church. A good time was had by all, but we’re now all pretty tired and heading to bed.
  • Glorious sunny day here so far (but cool) - enjoyed my swim (indoors!)

Mr F was to come home today after a week in hospital. Called to say he has developed a fever in the night, so now highly unlikely.

    Bugger.
  • I'm sorry, @Firenze. Not a good start to the day. Hope things improve soon, for both of you.

What a pain @firenze. How are you getting on I hope you've finished the antibiotics and are feeling a bit better.
We headed out to buy me a present for Mothering Sunday. We spent some time in a perfume shop that has recently reopened in a new location. My son used to work for a fine fragrance company as a chemist so quite enjoyed all the sniffing that went on. Unfortunately the scent I went for was out of stock though I'll pop in again sometime to see if its back. We then did Plan B which was to go to the gift shop at a local Farm Shop. Nothing there I wanted either. Plan C will involve a garden centre tomorrow for a plant.

Teatime Monday about the most optimistic, assuming the infection responds to treatment. Monday pm is when he has the next dose of the actual myeloma drug.

Meanwhile I see my surgeon on Wednesday.

I feel I should get some sort of Frequent Flyer reward on the No 24 bus.

  • Sorry to hear that, Firenze. I hope you both have a good week.

Sunny but cool here. The fish of the day bought from our Chinese fish market was a side of salmon, and we had a couple of fillets for lunch with some exotic mushrooms. Then we headed out to the Fitzwilliam Museum to explore the Greek and Roman room as I wanted to look at the sarcophagi (I am considering doing a Masters in Classical Studies next year and might do a dissertation based on one of the coffins).
We will probably have partridge pie for tea.

Sorry to hear about Mr F, Firenze - that is indeed an embuggerance. Hope things start looking up for you both.
I've had a lovely day singing in Embra, where we bade farewell to our conductor, who's retiring after running the choir for 18 years.

We had a very sociable farewell bash for him after Evensong, at which there was more than enough WINE (and quite a lot of FOOD).

It also managed to be a beautiful day, if rather chilly.
I haven't really eaten properly today: I picked up a salad box from M&S at the station for lunch, and grazed on sandwiches and pies at the farewell do. I might have an HCB and a cup of tea before I go to bed.

Another day for me of not proper meals. The concert went very well. So many weeks of slogging away at the notes, but tonight we made music. Bach’s B Minor Mass.
Unfortunately one of our tenors was taken ill during the Benedictus so the performance was paused. He did recover later. The last time we did a March concert in the cathedral a member of the audience was taken ill and the performance was paused and when we came out it was snowing. That was seven years ago. ( Our May concerts in the same venue are without incident.)

Mothering Sunday service at 11am at another church in our group, then lunch at my daughter’s. Back to my own church for Evensong at 4, preceded by choir practice at 3, so it’s all go tomorrow. At least I get a lie-in.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I was a Bad Piglet and skipped church this morning: I was still feeling a bit zonked from yesterday and thought one Sunday won't hurt. I'm heading over for Compline just now, so that'll maybe make up for it.

I'm going to pick up a Chinese takeaway afterwards for supper and hope to dodge the showers, which have been quite heavy.

Two consecutive tiring days. Apart from making a sandwich just now I have done nothing since I got home. Had a lovely roast chicken lunch. They proudly told me that for £10 they bought a chicken, some salmon, veg x 2 and something else- I forget what.

Evensong at 4pm attracted just TWO in the congregation. Nobody “official” to act as welcomers or even lock the vestry afterwards. Eleven singers, plus MD and organist.
Good Mothering Sunday service this morning. Three choir, about 40 congregation including two tiny children and a dog. The service including Communion was over in just under an hour.
Yesterday I attended Evensong in the cathedral, between rehearsal and concert. Six Lay Clerks, 16 congregants.

I've had a very lazy day. I managed to get to church this morning, but apart from that have done very little though we've just spent a very nice evening playing board games. We also had part two of random salads for dinner. When our son comes home we like to each cook a complementary dish for dinner. Quite often it is curries, but after a rather odd supper at the church ceilidh on Friday we felt in need of salads so did three yesterday with a slightly different re-run tonight.
Son is off home tomorrow morning and life will get back to what passes for normal round here.

No sign of the snow reported from other parts of Embra, just dull and grey. After seven days on the trot of skimped lunch, cold waits at bus stops, total travel times of an hour and a half, just so Mr F and I can stare glumly at one another for the most part, I have cried off visiting for today. He has another Treatment this afternoon and I'm hoping, so very much, that he gets home tomorrow.
  • BoogieBoogie Heaven Host
You describe hospital visiting very well @Firenze!

Hope he's home very soon ❤️‍🩹
  • FirenzeFirenze Shipmate, Host Emeritus
Treatment postponed until tomorrow. Duty doctor opined that would mean him staying in until Wednesday. However, consultant thought he could go Tuesday, after he'd had the shot - and subject to the usual discharge admin. Which means, hopefully, he'll be home by dinner time.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
I hope it all goes to plan @Firenze, having Mr F home will make both your lives much easier.
Son went home this morning so I didn't go to Pilates, instead we left the house at the same time as him, he peeled off to the station and we carried on. Husband was going to the gym so I walked with him as far as the cemetery and then came home by the scenic walk. I managed 7k which didn't seem bad for a Monday morning.
This week I have things on Monday to Thursday evening, starting with two clashing on-line meetings this evening.

I had to call for help over the weekend as we discovered a sewerage pipe blockage. The company (whose name begins with S and ends with evern Trent) came out first thing on Sunday morning and did their stuff by clearing the outlet (which was on our neighbour's side) and water was running through as expected. After they left I lifted our inspection cover and discovered that a backlog (pun intended) hadn't cleared through so they came out again this morning to attend to that.

I suppose they could have checked our side before leaving so that is a slight negative but the speed in which they came out originally and again second time leaves me pretty happy with how they dealt with it.

The only unfortunate thing is that I was due to do the projection at church yesterday and they turned up about three quarters of an hour before the service started. Luckily I was able to find someone else to collect the laptop from Rogue Towers and enable the congregation to sing lustily. Phew!

A long day today. I did the usual Monday morning stuff, spent the afternoon marking and I will be taking a break shortly to cook dinner before coming back into my office to deliver a 2 hour online lecture this evening on grief/study skills.

I have been eating cake. It's my youngest niece' s 18th birthday today. This means that I have no children in my life, the whole generation below me has reached adulthood.

I have indulged in a spot of nostalgia, looking at a photo of me cuddling my niece as a tiny baby.
  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
Captain Pyjamas' birthday bash went off well yesterday. We went to a place where you paint ceramics. They all enjoyed it, I think, but it was a pretty tiring affair for us on account of one child who was more trouble than all the rest of them put together :grimace:

This morning husband en rouge departed for a school trip, coming back on Friday. I deposited the Captain at school, and went thence to Lidl. On return home, I engaged in some heavy duty Spring Clean Ing. I have scrubbed down the balconies and cleaned all our windows. AFAIK rain is not expected, but no doubt the weather shall find a way to mess up my windows again...
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Well done, La Vie - what is this Clean Ing of which you speak? 🤔

Wishing Mr F a timely return home.

Busy day at work, only interrupted by a foray to Tessie's at lunchtime with the Trusty Trolley, which was luckily accomplished without Getting Wet.

Supper was pasta with prawns, mushrooms and somewhat wrinkly tomatoes (although once cooked they tasted fine).
  • My BIL's funeral will be held at the Bluebell crematorium on 18 March. It will be live streamed. If we can't see it live we can see a recording. My sister is, not surprisingly, having good days and bad days.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
I attended a funeral recently and then went home and watched the recorded version as I didn't get all of the eulogy and wanted to hear it properly. I think streaming is such a good idea. I hope it goes as well as these things can @LatchKeyKid.
A lovely sunny day here. I was inspired to do some housework this morning and then went out for lunch with a couple of friends to a local cafe where the mushrooms on toast was very nice. I came home to find my husband in the back garden mowing the lawn. It had grown rather a lot since he last cut it a couple of weeks ago.
  • Our lawn is a bit wet for that. I did cut it a couple of weeks ago, hopefully I'll get another chance later this week. Meanwhile washing is gaily fluttering on the line.
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
Thank you for all the good wishes. I am back and we are in! Internet was connected earlier today and as of around an hour ago my new study has my desk with my computer on it, a chair, a load of cardboard boxes and three empty bookshelves.

It's been a tough couple of weeks. I believe I said Mr Nen came down with a horrible cold a few days before moving (I, thankfully, didn't catch it) and was having to power through that. On Moving Day, the packers seriously mistimed things - assured us that they would be all done by 1pm and They Were Not. The morning became more and more stressful as it became more and more obvious that they wouldn't be (while continuing to assure us that they would) and in the end they were still getting us out of the back door as the new people were piling things up on our front lawn; they lived three doors down and we know them and were lovely about it but so embarrassing for us :anguished: .

The cleaner that we had paid extra for did a very poor job and had no sense of urgency - "Oh, you won't get the new keys until about three o'clock..." "Well, we could get them now; we haven't owned this house since midday  ."

The packers had also misjudged the weights of the vans and had to go off and repack them, having to leave some of our stuff (with the kind permission of the new owners) in the garage. So we headed off to get the keys to our new place (the legal completion being all done very smoothly and in good time) where we awaited their arrival. Our stuff ended up arriving in a very random order and in three lots - two van loads on Monday, two on Tuesday, one more on Thursday. We didn't find the kettle until Wednesday and the last of the food didn't emerge from the boxes until this weekend.

Fortunately we were booked into a nearby hotel for the first night and ate out the following two evenings.

I was also unprepared for the state the house has been left in and a lot of deep cleaning has been required. I had to scrub the dishwasher before I could use it and a Helpful Man is coming tomorrow morning to clean the ovens. I told Mr Nen I wouldn't touch them until that had been done.

Having said all that, we are getting there slowly and the house is beautiful - it has lots of big windows so is full of light from all directions, a huge kitchen/family room and the previous owners haven't decorated at all so the house (3 years old) is a clean slate for us to put our mark on. And the garden is lovely, they put a lot of effort in there and I'm looking forward to seeing it blossom and to continuing the good work. I've always wanted to garden but have never been very successful so with this good start I'm hoping I'll finally catch the gardening bug. Also, we overlook allotments and I'm sure some friendly allotment holders will be willing to share their knowledge with me, as well as the gardening thread posters here. We have given the lawn a cut and it's looking good.

The few people we've met seem very friendly, we've joined the neighbourhood WhatsApp group and on Sunday went to church for the first time where the congregation was small but very welcoming. It being Mothering Sunday we all received flowers.

Good to be back with you all. I hope Mr F is home soon @Firenze .

A sunny but chilly day here. Spaghetti bolognese for tea. No garlic bread because of the Oven Issue.

Welcome back, @Nenya, and every good wish as you and Mr Nen begin to enjoy your new home.
  • It is good to see you back, Nenya, and, although the important thing is that you love your new place (and have internet) it sounds like the kind of move which will make a good story some day! I have a few of those.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
Glad you are happy with the new place @Nenya. I hope you got a discount from the removals firm for the delays and inconvenience.

I had an eye test this morning and a clean bill of health. No new glasses needed so no ££ spent!

Still trying to finalise Mr Puzzler’s estate -almost three years on. Complications with his late mother’s estate have held things up but there is now some movement so I’m hoping the end is in sight.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Good to see you back, Nen, and glad you're finally In. Health to enjoy the new place, and good luck with the gardening!
Not much to report here: steadily busy at work followed by a chicken and veggie risotto for supper, which was very nice - I'll definitely do it again.
  • Best wishes in your new home, Nenya.

I’ve had a long day. I’m getting too old for the 2 hour evening tutorials and they knock me for six the next day, especially as I have usually worked all day beforehand. But work is full on at the moment so I was back at my desk this morning where I had lots to do including recording a study skills tutorial, and then back to the marking this afternoon. Much of the same expected tomorrow.
Tea was baked salmon with stir fried kalettes, onion and cherry tomatoes.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Glad you are in @Nenya and pleased with the house even if it did need a good clean. The garden sounds lovely so enjoy it as it comes to life over the next few weeks.
I hope the WhatsApp group is friendly. A lot of the stuff I see on Facebook from different areas of town is complaints about dog poo or suspicious people who've been spotted. Someone posted a picture of a man they thought was acting suspiciously only to be told it was a neighbour trying to find a lost cat.
I was out at a pretty contentious council meeting tonight. I also seem to have upset a fellow councillor unintentionally. It appears to have something to do with her not liking the way I voted on something months ago. I have another meeting tomorrow night and hopefully I can mend bridges. It was far too late by the time we'd finished tonight to get to the bottom of it all.

After a prolonged struggle against over-caution and NHS inertia, Mr F finally escaped about 6.

Light supper and an early night. Looking a lot brighter this morning after 10 hours sleep.

So glad Mr F managed to dig his tunnel @Firenze!

Pleased you are in @Nenya - I've been thinking of you.

I hope you soon feel at home and settled.

I'm not feeling too well, it feels like the anaemia I've had before. I've had blood tests and will see the doctor next week. So I'm having to pace myself. No art group today and gardening will be done in gentle bouts.

I'm really hoping to get to the poetry evening at our local Arts Centre. They are monthly and always excellent.

I've been out in the glorious sunshine for a walk with my local Ramblers group. It was so warm two people turned up in shorts and quite a few of us took off layers as we went along. I came home to a giant cardboard box in the hall. The water butt I ordered yesterday had arrived.

Glorious Sun-Shine in Arkland the Elysian, too, and feeling very warm for mid-March - around 60F, despite a mostly easterly Breeze.

A flaky week, though Pilates yesterday was OK. Maybe it's my Age creeping up on me, but everything I do seems to take (a) longer, and b) more physical and mental effort.

Heigh ho. They gave me 5 years after my brain op in 2016, so coming up to 10 years is a bonus - every new day (no matter how quiet, flaky, or minus energy) is something worth savouring!

There is always CHEESE. And BEER.

Glad Mr F is home and I hope you feel better soon @Boogie ; take care of yourself.

Here in the Wilds of Wiltshire it's been warm and sunny all day. I spent a couple of hours in the garden weeding, digging up a couple of things I didn't want or like and thinking about and planning what I could do out there. I think I'm going to enjoy it.

The Helpful Oven-Cleaning Man has Helpfully Cleaned the Ovens and they are sparkling so I'm feeling a lot happier about them too.

After lunch we went to one of the nearest towns on a couple of errands and had a bit of a mooch about, and on our return had cups of tea on the decking in the sunniest corner of the garden where it was actually rather too hot and we started considering Sun Cream :flushed: .

The unpacking of the books will be no chore at all @Sarasa , but thank you for the offer. I'm currently considering where I want my bookshelves before Mr Nen attaches them to the walls for stability. I loved my little study in my previous house so much that I need this one to feel different otherwise I'll be constantly reminded of the old one, which will not necessarily be a Good Thing.

The remains of the bolognese for tea, washed down with WINE . Tomorrow there's a coffee morning at the village hall where we hope to meet some of the locals and get our faces more known.

ETA: good to see you @Bishops Finger and I for one am very glad you are here and sailing with the Ship. Enjoy your CHEESE and BEER. I'll raise my wineglass to you and all Shipmates this evening; it's good to be back with you all.

As someone who severely dislikes both cheese and beer, you may have my share. Due to another day of severe delays on the trains, dinner tonight consisted of a packet of crisps (prawn cocktail flavour) and a packet of wine gums bought at a highly inflated price from Waterloo station. Should've left her 47 minutes ago, but we are still sat on the platform, waiting to leave.

When we moved here the removers put the bookshelves in a row in the back living room. It is a long room and we decided they looked so good there that is where they stayed. I didn't have a study in our previous house, just a corner of the sofa, so I am so happy to have one here.
I had yet another meeting tonight, but it was so much nicer than the one yesterday and I think we all left in a positive frame of mind, even if we now all have various items to follow up.

We had a riveting talk at u3a about Toilets! Or especially the lack of them in many countries, not only leading to diseases but also limiting the lives of girls and women.
The speaker was not a charity worker as you might expect, but a retired engineer who has worked overseas on various water/sanitation projects.

Instead of my usual Wednesday spag bol, it turned into to cottage pie as I had some leftover potato and veg that needed using. After choir I have had a hot cross bun with some cheese, prompted by the Cheese thread, though nothing more exciting than Red Leicester.
  • There is something very strange going on in this area of SW England. The sky has turned a very peculiar colour. I can only describe it as "blue". What can it mean? Why isn't it grey like it has been for every day as far back as I can remember?
  • Nor does it have wet stuff falling out of it.

For goodness' sake, if it stays like this I shall have to mow the lawn!

While I was laid up for the last half of 2024 Mrs Sioni decided that the thing outside needed to be put out of its misery, so it was completely paved over. The decking needed to be replaced and the lumpy green patch was mostly moss and ants nests, so that has all gone. We now have a couple of dozen planters and pots which are a much nicer place for our 6 o’clock Pimm’s, when the weather relents.
    We have hopes.
